Um eine Analyse der Bildlichkeit im Prosawerk Marlinskijs vornehmen zu können, bedarf es im Vorfeld einer Skizzierung dessen, was eine solche Untersuchung zu leisten imstande ist. Dem bildlichen Ausdruck als Interpretationseinheit, seinem Inhalt und seiner Stellung im Kontext soll das Hauptaugenmerk der vorliegenden Arbeit gelten. Denn die Art und Weise, wie Marlinskij bestimmte Sachverhalte neu und überraschend benennt, läßt Rückschlüsse auf sein Verhältnis zur Welt und seine persönliche Sicht der Dinge zu. Die durch den Autor vorgenommenen subjektiven Neuzuweisungen von Bezeichnungen und Begriffen lassen den Leser einen tiefen Einblick in die Gedankenwelt des Dichters tun und zu den verborgenen Ebenen seines dichterischen Werkes vorstoßen.

Situated at the intersection of postcolonial studies, affect studies, and narratology, "Affective Disorders" explores the significance of emotion in a range of colonial and postcolonial narratives. Through close readings of Naguib Mahfouz, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, and Upamanyu Chatterjee, among others, Bede Scott argues that literary representations of emotion need not be interpreted solely at the level of character, individual psychology, or the contingencies of plotting, but could also be related to broader sociopolitical forces. We thus find episodes of anger that serve as a collective response to the ‘modernity’ of wartime Cairo, feelings of jealousy that are inspired by the slave economy of imperial Brazil, and an overwhelming sense of boredom that emerges, in the late eighties, out of the bureaucratic procedures of the Indian Administrative Service.This book is made open access as part of the Knowledge Unlatched KU Select 2019: HSS Backlist Books

Social scientists have only recently begun to explore the link between health and political engagement. Understanding this relationship is vitally important from both a scholarly and a policy-making perspective. This book is the first to offer a comprehensive account of health and political engagement. Using both individual-level and country-level data drawn from the European Social Survey, World Values Survey and new Finnish survey data, it provides an extensive analysis of how health and political engagement are connected. It measures the impact of various health factors on a wide range of forms of political engagement and attitudes and helps shed light on the mechanisms behind the interaction between health and political engagement. The Discourse on the Method (French: Discours de la méthode) is a philosophical and autobiographical treatise published by René Descartes in 1637. Its full name is Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences (French title: Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la vérité dans les sciences). The Discourse on The Method is best known as the source of the famous quotation "Je pense, donc je suis" ("I think, therefore I am"), which occurs in Part IV of the work. (The similar statement in Latin, Cogito ergo sum, is found in Part I, §7 of Principles of Philosophy.) The Discourse on the Method is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the development of natural sciences. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been studied by Sextus Empiricus, Al-Ghazali and Michel de Montaigne. Descartes modified it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Descartes started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions. The book was originally published in Leiden in the Netherlands. Later, it was translated into Latin and published in 1656 in Amsterdam. The book was intended as an introduction to three works Dioptrique, Météores and Géométrie. La Géométrie contains Descartes' first introduction of the Cartesian coordinate system. That the text was written and published in French rather than Latin, which was the language in which philosophical and scientific texts were most frequently written and published (as were most of Descartes' other works), is worth noting. Together with Meditations on First Philosophy (Meditationes de Prima Philosophia), Principles of Philosophy (Principia philosophiae) and Rules for the Direction of the Mind (Regulae ad directionem ingenii), it forms the base of the epistemology known as Cartesianism. It's best known for its quote "In wildness is the preservation of the world", which has become a rallying cry of the environmental movement. But Thoreau means much more by the phrase then most of his modern admirers realise. "Wildness" is Nature itself, and humankind is seen as an aspect or manifestation of Nature; the rules that apply to one apply to the other.

Nahezu alle (evangelischen) Großkirchen in Deutschland haben nach der Jahrtausendwende flächendeckend Mitarbeiter- oder Personalentwicklungsgespräche eingeführt. In der Hannoverschen Landeskirche wurde deren Einführung als „Jahresgespräche“ besonders breit diskutiert. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht diese Diskussionen als Ausdruck eines veränderten Selbstverständnisses der gesamten Leitungspraxis der evangelischen Kirchen und stellt sie in den Kontext der Debatten zur kirchlichen „Organisationsreform“, die seit den 1990er Jahren die Praxis und Theorie der Kirche beschäftigen. Anhand der Visitation wird ein Modell entwickelt, das kirchliches Leitungshandeln und die damit verbundenen Konflikte und Spannungsfelder in drei Grunddimensionen beschreibt und differenziert. In Anwendung auf die Jahresgespräche werden damit Konfliktstrukturen und Problemfelder sichtbar gemacht.
