An experienced and knowledgeable individual who provides guidance and training to employees in the workplace 5 Mentor Selection • Mentors are chosen because they are: • Experienced in the position they will mentor • Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for a role or task • Knowledgeable trainers for new team members 6 Benefits of Mentors For the Mentor • Personal satisfaction from helping others • Create a “duplication” of yourself • Work on leadership skills For the Mentee • Learn the role more quickly than through other training methods • Learn from the most qualified person in the building • Less frustration during training For PPG • Less turnover, higher retention • New hires learn their role faster and with more accuracy • Employee satisfaction and engagement 7 Characteristics of an Excellent Mentor An Excellent Mentor Actively listens Is flexible Asks open ended questions Offers encouragement Respects Mentee viewpoints Builds trust Is knowledgeable Helps Mentee learn from mistakes Communicates authentically Gives constructive feedback 8 Mentor Responsibilities & Expectations Mentors will: • Assist in the creation of Mentee’s o nboarding training schedule • Conduct new hire onboarding training with Mentee • Provide a tour of the office and warehouse • Act as the go - to person for Mentee questions and concerns • Oversee Mentee’s completion of the onboarding schedule • Give feedback and encouragement to Mentee to facilitate growth • Inform supervisor of mentoring activities • Maintain a professional relationship with the Mentee 9 Mentor Tips 1 Ask questions to be aware of how the training is going for the Mentee. Make sure the Mentee is learning what you’re teaching. 2 Share ideas with the Mentee without dominating the conversation. They value your opinion. 3 Be very clear in your training and concise in your communications with the Mentee. Don’t assume that they are getting it just because you said it. 4 Listen intently to the questions being asked of you during the training. By actively listening, the Mentee will feel that you’re invested in their learning. 5 Offer encouragement when some part of the training seems difficult for the Mentee. Always remember, you have been doing this far longer than the person you are training. 6 Make introductions between the Mentee and other team members when appropriate. The more comfortable the Mentee is, the better they will learn and feel part of the team. 7 Celebrate the Mentee’s progress and milestones. Starting a new job can have a steep learning curve and feel overwhelming. 8 Take pride in yourself and your work! You were chosen to be a Mentor because you’re really good at what you do. 10 Process & Next Steps Supervisor and Mentors will work together to create the onboarding and training plan Mentees will be assigned to Mentors by their supervisor and receive notification of assignment via Jobvite Mentors will meet with Mentees on their first day and follow the onboarding and training plan for their first 90 days 1 2 3
