1 Trait sadism among a BDSM practitioner sample and a matched general population sample Consent to Participate in Research January 1 8 th , 2022 Purpose of the research : You are being asked to participate in a research project that is being done by Marco Del Giudice and Marley Russell, from the UNM department of psychology. Funding for this project comes from psychology departmental research money. The purpose of this rese arch is to examine the relationship between sexual attitudes and personality traits. You are being asked to join because you are a US resident of at least 18 years old, who is fluent in English, and have participated in at least 20 hours of BDSM across you r lifetime so far, regardless of type or context. This consent form contains important information about this project and what to expect if you decide to participate. Please consider the information carefully. Feel free to ask questions before making yo ur decision whether or not to participate. Your participation in this research is voluntary What you will do in the project : If you choose to participate in this project, you will complete a 10 - 15 minute survey hosted on Google Forms. You may complete this survey any time or place that you choose, as long as you have an internet connection and access to a web browser that will run Google Forms. Your responses will never be associated with any identifying information such as your name or email, and you may skip any question that makes you uncomfortable ( barring four items related to inclusion criteria which are required for participation ) or stop the survey at any time by simply exiting your browser window without submitting your responses. Risks: There are risks of stress, emotional distress, inconvenience and possible loss of privacy and confidentiality associated with participating in a research project. There is a minimal risk that participation in this study will adversely affect participants No physical, social, economic, or legal risks are anticipated. The study is completely questionnaire based and anonymous. Some questions will cover subjects such as sadistic behavior, aggression, and humiliation, and will therefore pose a risk for slight p sychological discomfort. Because data is de - identified upon collection, there is little opportunity for loss of confidentiality. Benefits: There will be no direct benefit to you from participating in this research A donation of $2/participant, however, will be made to a kink positive advocacy or legal organization that you will vote on as the last question on the survey, so that the BDSM community may benefit from this research. It is hoped that information gained will help psychologists understand the differences between types of sadism , thereby providing opportunity to study the stigma associated with BDSM - related sexual behavior. Confidentiality of your information : Collecting identifying personal information al ong with survey responses is not required for this project, so data will be de - identified upon collection to ensure confidentiality. De - identified data will be stored on Google Forms and as an excel file backed up on the researchers’ hard drive. For this p roject de - identified data will only be accessed by the primary and student investigators, but the information or samples may be used for future research or shared with other researchers without your additional informed consent. We will take measures to protect the security of all your personal information, but we cannot guarantee confidentiality of all research data. The University of New Mexico Institutional Review Board (I RB) that oversees human research may be permitted to acc ess your records.
