8a° ah ei) Loong ago, a witch named Gothel kept a girl prisoner in a hidden manor. The girl, Rapunzel, had only two friendsâHobie, a rabbit, and Penelope, a dragon. And since she was never allowed outside, she spent her days painting. One afternoon, the three friends found a secret room under the kitchen. There, Rapunzel discovered a silver hairbrush. On it was engraved, âTo Rapunzel on her first birthday. With love forever, Mother and Father.â âGothel told me I was abandoned when I was just a few days old,â said Rapunzel. âWhy would she lie to me?â Rapunzel then found a tunnel that led out of the manor and followed it. The tunnel led to a village with a palace on a hill above it. Rapunzel looked around, amazed by the beauty she saw. As Rapunzel walked, she saw a little girl fall into a trap. Rapunzel rushed over and tried to pull the little girl out. But Rapunzel began to slip into the trap! Suddenly, she was pulled out by a handsome man. Rapunzel didnât know it, but the man was Prince Stefan. He told Rapunzel that the pit was built by King Wilhelm from a nearby kingdom. âWilhelm hates our King Frederick,â said Stefan. âHe is at war with our kingdom.â Realizing she was late, Rapunzel ran home without saying good-bye to Stefan or learning his name. we hat night, Gothelâs ferret, we Otto, told her about the man Âź Rapunzel met that day. The witch ran to Rapunzel. âWho did you meet today?â she asked. âT donât know,â Rapunzel answered. âT know youâre lying!â Gothel fumed. Using a magic beam, Gothel destroyed Rapunzelâs paintings and art supplies. Then she cast a spell that transformed Rapunzelâs room into a tower. âWhen I return, I want a name!â the witch raged. That night, an upset Rapunzel fell asleep. She didnât see the sparkling magic that changed the hairbrush into an enchanted silver paintbrush! The next day, Penelope and Hobie brought Rapunzel some new paints that they had made. They wanted to cheer her up. Thanking her friends, Rapunzel picked up the strange silver paintbrush. 70 As she painted, the red paint turned bright blueâall because she was thinking of blue sky! Soon she had painted an image of the village. Bravelly, she walked right into the painting. As she entered the village, she saw Stefan. But she wouldnât let him tell her his name in case Gothel asked about it again. As they walked through the castle grounds, Stefan gave her an invitation to that nightâs Masked Ball. âilove to come, said Rapunzel, But | have to get back.â said Rapunzel. As Stefan headed back to the castle, Rapunzel painted a picture of the tower on a garden gate. She stepped through the painting back into the tower. pik2 Needing a dress for the ball, Rapunzel (9) painted one on the wall. She stepped into the dress and put on a mask. She was ready for the Masked Ball! Then Gothel burst in. Otto had shown her the invitation. Angrily, she shot magic bolts that cut off Rapunzelâs hair, ruined the paintbrush, and erased the painting of the village. Then Gothel cast a spell on the tower, crying, âNever release your prisoner with a lying heart!â She left for the ball, Rapunzelâs hair in hand. Disguised as Rapunzel, Gothel arrived at the ball and caught Stefanâs eye. She ran out of the palace and Stefan followed close behind. As he caught up to her, she fired a magic bolt at him, shouting, âThis will teach you to meddle with my plans!â âPlans?â Stefan muttered, as he dodged the deadly bolt and ran back toward the castle. âWhat plans?â Back at the tower, an idea came to Penelope. âYou haven't been lying to Gothel, so her spell canât stop you!â Rapunzel leaped onto Penelopeâs back and they headed to the palace. Meanwhile, King Wilhelm and his soldiers had burst into the ballroom. The kings battled, with Stefan joining in. Gothelâs magic knocked all the swords to the ground. She faced Wilhelm. âSo, we meet again! You loved me all those years ago. I know you did!â âWe were only friends!â protested King Wilhelm. âWe were not in love.â âBut we were,â insisted Gothel. âThatâs why I stole your daughter.â âBut...Frederick stole my daughter.â said King Wilhelm. âIâm sure of it. ?ve searched for her for years.â b) âWilhelm, for the thousandth time, I didnât steal your daughter!â King Frederick protested loudly. Gothel sneered. âRapunzel would have been my daughter if you had married me. I simply took what was mine!â Suddenly, Rapunzel herself appeared! Surprised, Gothel stumbled, and her magic bolts set the palace aflame. As everyone ran out, pushing and shoving, 15) Gothel fell into the image of the tower that Rapunzel had painted the day before. And since Gothel had a lying heart, she would be the one imprisoned in the tower forever! At the castle, King Wilhelm apologized to King Frederick, and they shook hands as friends. And not long after, Rapunzel and Prince Stefan married, and they lived happily ever after!
