Cinnamon is an easy to find spice that you can pick up at just about any grocery store Although it’s not the cheapest spice, it’s also not the most expensive – and when compared to many other garden treatments, like rooting hormones, it’s totally affordable Its great for protecting your seeds and seedlings from fungi and diseases Sprinkle some cinnamon powder on the soil of your seedlings as it will stop damping off from the antifungal properties, and it also protects your seedlings if there is an attack from TEMO THUO FARMERS MAGAZINE 4 ants or mosquitoes, and it even gets rid of wild mushrooms Cinnamon is a very cheap and easily available alternative for growth hormones It is advised to dry your cuttings before using cinnamon as growth hormones Heal your plants by using cinnamon, if you have wounded plants which is prone to catching a fungal infection, by covering the wounded area Get rid of furry pests like rabbits, squirrels, and moles who love hanging out in vegetable gardens and destroying garden beds Sprinkle cinnamon around your garden, where the pests would breathe the cinnamon in (it will not kill them or cause any permanent damage) but it would cause irritation in their nose and mouth which would ultimately cancel their frequent visits to your garden Fight fungal infections on your plants If you see fungus growing on either the stem of the leaves, here is what you can do : Take 2 - 3 tablespoons of powdered cinnamon and mix it in 1 - 2 quarters of warm water Mix these two ingredients in a bottle of spray Let it sit in water for one night After one night, strain it and use the water as an antifungal spray Spray the water on affected areas of plants twice a week Get rid of flying bugs by investing in cinnamon oil which you can use as a spray, but the powder would also do the trick You can also mix cinnamon with honey and apply the paste onto the area to relieve the itch of any big bite Not only is cinnamon good for your garden, but it also has a long history of use in traditional medicine in various parts of the world, including China, India, and Persia (Iran) Today, cinnamon is promoted as a dietary supplement for diabetes or for irritable bowel syndrome or other gastrointestinal problems, as well as other conditions Issue 6 – August 2022 TEMO THUO FARMERS MAGAZINE 5 SURVIVAL KNOTS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW This is one of the most basic and common known knots You can easily do this by forming a loop and pulling one end of the rope through the loop The double overhand knot is an extended version of the basic overhand knot Instead of pulling the rope tight, pull the rope through the loop two more times before pulling it tight An overhand bow is very useful when you’re climbing, fishing, or just tying your shoes It’s a knot that’s difficult to untie, which makes it very dependable and firm This knot is similar to the overhand knot, but instead of one rope, you will be using two ropes Another basic knot every man should know is the figure eight knot This knot is used when rock climbing or sailing because it prevents the rope from being pulled out of its retaining devices Tie this knot by making a loop with one end and passing the end through it Then pull both sides of the rope The running knot is an adjustable basic knot often used in forming a noose You need two form loops for this knot Then, pull the end of the rope through the last loop, make a new loop by going under the rope, and then pull the rope The loop tightens whenever it’s pulled Issue 6 – August 2022 PLANT BASED MEDICINE TEMO THUO FARMERS MAGAZINE 7 Traditional Medicine is considered less effective than Modern medicine , however, does modern medicine leave you with other problems to now diagnose too? Here are a few plants with natural remedies. Aloe vera is commonly known as a topical gel used to treat sunburn. Promisingly, it may also provide other health benefits, largely due to its antioxidant properties. Preliminary research has indicated that aloe vera may benefit your skin, dental, oral, and digestive health. It may even improve blood sugar control Aroma therapists use lavender in inhalation therapy to treat headaches, nervous disorders, and exhaustion. Herbalists treat skin ailments, such as fungal infections (like candidiasis), wounds, eczema, and acne, with lavender oil. It is also used in a healing bath for joint and muscle pain Lemons contain a high amount of vitamin C, soluble fiber , and plant compounds that give them a number of health benefits. Lemons may aid weight loss and reduce your risk of heart disease, anemia , kidney stones, digestive issues, and cancer People commonly use garlic for high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol or other fats in the blood, and hardening of the arteries. It is also used for the common cold, osteoarthritis, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses The main medicinal applications of marigold are skin conditions of all kinds, including contusions, bruises, and varicose veins. Minor skin injuries and inflammation can also be successfully treated. Marigold ointment promotes wound healing for eczema and sunburns. Peppermint may help improve digestion, freshen your breath and improve concentration. Additionally, this mint has antibacterial properties and may improve allergy symptoms, headaches, and clogged airways Thyme contains chemicals that might help bacterial and fungal infections. It also might help relieve coughing and have antioxidant effects. People commonly use thyme for cough, patchy hair loss (alopecia areata ), dementia, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses The herb has been hailed since ancient times for its medicinal properties. Rosemary was traditionally used to help alleviate muscle pain, improve memory, boost the immune and circulatory system, and promote hair growth Parsley leaf, seed, and root are used to make medicine. Some people use parsley for conditions such as bladder infections (UTIs), kidney stones (nephrolithiasis), gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, constipation, skin conditions, and many others Issue 6 – August 2022 CROP MANAGEMENT MONITORING SYSTEMS ON - SITE MONITORING REMOTE MONITORING Cell: (+267) 71 61 4007 Email: jerrysteamenergy@gmail.com Powered by: Growing microgreens is an easy, and affordable, way to have fresh greens year - round It doesn’t take much space to grow microgreens , and is also perfect to grow at any time of year ! diazinon , Imidan , malathion and Sevin , Carbamates , Bees are one of the world' most significant pollinators for our food crops Every day we depend on bees and different pollinators In actual fact, out of each 3 bites we consume depends on pollination however bee populations still decline due to the wide spread use of pesticides and other environmental factors — like climate change Without bees, the supply and availability of fresh produce would decline considerably, and human nutrition would probably suffer Crops that may not be cost - efficient to hand - or robot - pollinate would likely be lost or persist solely with the dedication of human hobbyists The most pressing threats to long - term bee survival include : organophosphates, synthetic pyrethroids , chlorinated cylcodienes and neonicotinoids For example, pesticide exposure at the individual level might be lethal, sub lethal or create changes to the behaviour of a bee However, at the colony level, pesticide exposure might impact an entire bee hive , the species , and (eventually ) crop yields Scientists have proven that individual bees can be poisoned while flying through pesticide - contaminated planter dust in a recently planted corn field More often, they are poisoned at sub lethal levels by eating and drinking contaminated pollen, nectar and water over time “ If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth, man would have no more than four years left to live .” - Albert Einstein THE IMPORTANCE OF BEES Issue 6 – August 2022 So what can we do with an egg that is science - like and fun? By dissolving an egg shell with a mild acid and turns into a rubbery substance .. Without further ado, let’s get on it Materials needed : An egg (cooked or raw) a tall drinking glass, and lastly, white vinegar Procedure : Put your egg into the tall drinking glass then p our vinegar into the glass until the egg is covered Put the glass aside so no one drinks or spills it (It will smell a bit as vinegar has a strong odour ) Allow your egg to soak overnight and make some observations! You will notice a lot of foam and bubbles .. When it seems to have slowed down, move on to the next step of this experiment Rinse the vinegar and foam out with water and then cover the egg again with vinegar Wait for 6 days That’s a long time but do it ; you don’t want a half pickled egg in your hands At the end of this time, rinse off the egg and pick it up You should notice it feels slightly different than when you started ... the egg is missing the shell and has a rubbery feel to it Shake it Gently squeeze it Test out your new creation in the sink by dropping it from a few inches and then some more You now have a cool creation that can astound your friends and family Place it back in the egg tray for some amusement Explanation : A chicken’s egg is covered in a shell that is made of calcium carbonate That’s a complex arrangement of carbons, calcium, and oxygen Regular vinegar is made of acetic acid The shell is made of the same carbonate as baking soda and the little bubbles you see in the water are made of carbon dioxide gas ; just like the bubbles from your vinegar and baking soda volcano This process also “pickles” the egg, by hardening it up The toughening of that membrane is what lets you bounce it on the counter, roll it along the floor, and whatever science you want to do with it ! Experiment Further : As with all science, the real experimenting takes place after you see the trick I hope that you enjoyed this simple experiment for children!
