Return

Biao Xiang

Since the late 1990s, Asian nations have increasingly encouraged, facilitated, or demanded the return of emigrants. In this interdisciplinary collection, distinguished scholars from countries around the world explore the changing relations between nation-states and transnational mobility. Taking into account illegally trafficked migrants, deportees, temporary laborers on short-term contracts, and highly skilled émigrés, the contributors argue that the figure of the returnee energizes and redefines nationalism in an era of increasingly fluid and indeterminate national sovereignty. They acknowledge the diversity, complexity, and instability of reverse migration, while emphasizing its discursive, policy, and political significance at a moment when the tensions between state power and transnational subjects are particularly visible. Taken together, the essays foreground Asia as a useful site for rethinking the intersections of migration, sovereignty, and nationalism.

The Twilight of the Avant-garde

CC BY-NC-ND

Twilight of the Avant-Garde: Spanish Poetry 1980-2000 addresses the central problem of contemporary Spanish poetry: the attempt to preserve the scope and ambitiousness of modernist poetry at the end of the twentieth century. Jonathan Mayhew first offers a critical analysis of the called 'poetry of experience' of Luis García Montero, a tendency that is based on the supposed obsolescence of the modernist poetics of the first half of the century. While the 'poetry of experience' presents itself as a progressive attempt to 'normalise' poetry, to make it accessible to the common reader, Mayhew views it as a reactionary move that ultimately reduces poetry to the status of a minor genre. The author then turns his attention to the poetry of José Angel Valente and Antonio Gamoneda, whose poetry embodies the continuation of modernism, and to the work of younger women poets of the last two decades of the twentieth century. Throughout this controversial and provocative book, Mayhew challenges received notions about the value of poetic language in relation to the larger culture and society. It turns out that the cultural ambition of modernist poetics is still highly relevant even in an age in which more cynical views of literature seem prevalent. Ultimately, Mayhew writes as an advocate for the survival of more challenging and ambitious modes of poetic writing in the postmodern age.

Jung, weiblich, jüdisch – deutsch?

CC BY

A declaration of love for Germany by the Jewish author Lena Gorelik in her semi-autobiographical text “Dear Mischa” (2011) poses the question whether the Holocaust is still the point of reference and central characteristic of self-conception of the contemporary or third generation of Jewish writers in Germany after 1945. In addition to Gorelik’s text, the study analyzes Katja Petrowskaja’s “Maybe Esther” (2014) and Olga Grjasnowa’s “All Russians Love Birch Trees” (2012). This third generation of authors, publishing after 2010, is part of the ‘new’ German Jewry, composed mainly of immigrants from the former Soviet Union and their children – a fact which significantly influences contemporary Jewish identity in Germany: The analysis of the literary identities, which the authors constructed for their protagonists, sheds light on current trends in contemporary Jewish life in Germany and demonstrates that these ‘new’ Jews from the East reject the special status assigned to them as ‘victims of the Holocaust’ or ‘exotic’ outsiders. Instead the authors voice the desire for ‘normalization’ in the German-Jewish relationship in their autofictional texts.
