From 1890 until 1938 in Vienna, Jewish theatre was a lively and fascinating part of the theatrical scene. Yiddish operettas and melodramas, serious plays and so-called Jargonschwänke were staged. The widespread texts of these Jewish theatre-evenings, in Yiddish and German, are discussed and analysed in this work.After an introduction, the aesthetical and dramaturgical basics of Jewish drama are presented. As the study shows, Jewish drama has got a very strong connection to non-Jewish theatre. Especially the dramaturgic forms can be found in non-Jewish drama before it emerges in Jewish texts, like the so-called lebnsbild. In the 19th century, it was popular on the Viennese stages, around 1900 it was a main genre of New York City's Yiddish theatres. Jargon and shund are terms often used to describe Yiddish plays and theatre - these terms are discussed in the present work as well as the cliché of Jewish self-mockery and self-hatred.The most prominent themes Jewish plays are dealing with are: love, marriage and family; anti-Semitism; stories and heroes from ancient Jewish history; myths and legends. The broad spectrum of plays about family and social life shows its importance in Jewish history and presence. The different political and historical situations of Jews in Western and Eastern Europe become evident in text concerning anti-Semitism. In Yiddish operettas and melodramas heroes from ancient Jewish history and the bible are shown, and in the 1920s plays about Dibbuks and Golems were most popular.A bibliography of Jewish dramas, complete with existing translations, builds the last part of this work.Jüdische Theatertexte, wie sie von 1890 bis 1938 in Wien aufgeführt und / oder geschrieben wurden, stehen im Zentrum dieser Arbeit. Dazu zählen jiddische Singspiele, Melodramen und ernsthafte Dramen ebenso wie Texte berühmter deutschjüdischer Autoren der Wiener Moderne und die sogenannten Jargonschwänke, die äußerst populär waren.Nach einer Einführung in die Thematik werden die ästhetischen und dramaturgischen Grundlagen der jüdischen Dramatik vorgestellt. Dabei wird klar, dass diese aus der nichtjüdischen Theaterwelt stammen, wie etwa das im jiddischen Theater wichtige Genre des Lebensbildes, das auf Wiener Bühnen des 19. Jahrhunderts zu finden war. Die in der zeitgenössischen Kritik und in der Theatergeschichtsschreibung oft negativ verwendeten Begriffe Schund und Jargon für das Jiddische und dessen Theatertexte werden im weiteren diskutiert. Außerdem wird auf das Klischee von der angeblich so starken Neigung von Juden zu Selbstpersiflage und Selbstverhöhnung eingegangen.Im zentralen Teil werden die jüdischen Dramen, nach Themen geordnet, vorgestellt und analysiert. Wesentliche Themenbereiche sind: Liebe und Partnerwahl, Ehe und Familie; Antisemitismus; Geschichten und Legenden aus der Zeit vor der Diaspora sowie Mythen und Legenden.Die Breite und Vielfalt der Familiendramen verweist auf die zentrale Bedeutung der Familie innerhalb der jüdischen Geschichte und Kultur. In den Dramen, der Hauptthema Antisemitismus ist, werden die unterschiedlichen Lebensbedingungen sowie die sozialen und politischen Grundlagen der Juden in West- und Osteuropa evident. Geschichten und Legenden aus der Zeit vor der Diaspora, vor allem aus der Bibel, bilden die Stoffen jiddischer Singspiele und Operetten, die ebenso vorgestellt werden wie die dramatischen Bearbeitungen der Golem- und Dibbuk-Sagen.Die Arbeit schließt mit einer umfassenden Dramenbibliographie, die nicht nur die verwendeten Texte umfasst, sondern auch die jeweiligen Übersetzungen, um Zugänge zu diesen Texten und eine weitere Auseinandersetzung damit zu ermöglichen.

The contributions collected in this volume are the result of the seminars organized by the Laboratory of Modern History during its ten-year activity (from 2003 to 2013) within the Department of Historical and Geographical Studies (now called SAGAS Department) of the University of Florence. Thanks to the participation of Italian and international colleagues, as well as young scholars, this annual cycle of seminars, entitled Temi e problemi della storia moderna (“Themes and problems of Modern History”), aims at encouraging the scientific community to discuss and reflect critically on topics of great historical importance. The theme of otherness is central in the Modern Age as well as in in the contemporary world, and it has been the subject of several seminars. The essays reconstruct significant moments and aspects of the relationships with “the other” in modern Europe: political models and cultural paradigms, cities of refuge and institutes of conversion, attitudes showing integration and/or exclusion of the Jews, Muslims, heretics and foreigners have been analysed in the volume according to the Laboratory’s 'pluralistic spirit’.

He finds similarities, not in the extent of the horror but in terms of the goals of the perpetrators.

Si bien el concepto de literatura puede presentar aspectos polémicos en la cultura griega antigua, ella se constituye como una definición aplicada al conjunto de textos antiguos en el contexto de su producción, interpretación y posterior recepción, es decir en la medida en que ellos se convierten en vehículos de diseminación pública de ideología y relaciones de poder. El libro propone una reflexión sobre la absorción de las relaciones de poder en la narrativa épica, en las voces marginalizadas de las mujeres homéricas y en el modo en que el mito permite una cartografía del poder en la narrativa hesiódica. Además de ello, se propone una discusión de las instituciones de la ciudadanía a través de la poesía que “literariza” un ritual funeral y de las definiciones de las figuras paternas o de alteridad como los extranjeros en la tragedia. La interpelación al ritual de súplica como práctica social realizada en la parodia de la comedia aristofánica y en el proyecto político de la República de Platón se acompaña con una reflexión final sobre otro contenido cultural, el agón atlético textualizado por Filóstrato en el marco de la segunda sofística. De tal manera, el libro procura ofrecer un itinerario amplio en que se discuten manifestaciones culturales que se conforman en la literatura, en distintos géneros discursivos y en distintos ejes temporales, que aportarán a los estudiosos un proficuo enfoque de la Grecia Antigua en sus textos.

The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (commonly known as Martin Chuzzlewit) is a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. It was originally serialised in 1843 and 1844. Dickens thought it to be his best work, but it was one of his least popular novels. Like nearly all of Dickens' novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was released to the public in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing, compared to previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the author to portray the United States (which he had visited in 1842) satirically as a near wilderness with pockets of civilisation filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters. The main theme of the novel, according to a preface by Dickens, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, a friend of Dickens. From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Die Finanzierung der Landkreise basiert im wesentlichen auf den Finanzzuweisungen der Länder und der Kreisumlage. Damit stellt sich die Frage, wie die Schlüsselzuweisungen und die Kreisumlage als Instrumente des kommunalen Finanzausgleichs so miteinander verknüpft werden können, daß im kreisangehörigen Raum eine den jeweiligen Aufgaben entsprechende Finanzausstattung zustande kommt. Dieses Problem wird am Beispiel des kommunalen Finanzausgleichs von Rheinland-Pfalz diskutiert. Der Verfasser zeigt insbesondere, daß die Verteilung der Schlüsselzuweisung bei sachgerechtem Einsatz der Kreisumlage nicht zu einer Übernivellierung zwischen den rheinland-pfälzischen Landkreisen führt.

This open access book examines the political structures and processes that frame and produce understandings of diversity in and through music education. Recent surges in nationalist, fundamentalist, protectionist and separatist tendencies highlight the imperative for music education to extend beyond nominal policy agendas or wholly celebratory diversity discourses. Bringing together high-level theorisation of the ways in which music education upholds or unsettles understandings of society and empirical analyses of the complex situations that arise when negotiating diversity in practice, the chapters in this volume explore the politics of inquiry in research; examine music teachers’ navigations of the shifting political landscapes of society and state; extend conceptualisations of diversity in music education beyond familiar boundaries; and critically consider the implications of diversity for music education leadership. Diversity is thus not approached as a label applied to certain individuals or musical repertoires, but as socially organized difference, produced and manifest in various ways as part of everyday relations and interactions. This compelling collection serves as an invitation to ongoing reflexive inquiry; to deliberate the politics of diversity in a fast-changing and pluralist world; and together work towards more informed and ethically sound understandings of how diversity in music education policy, practice, and research is framed and conditioned both locally and globally.
