Good afternoon <your MP name here>, I hope this email reaches you well. I am contacting you today to raise the issues surrounding the current world wide rates being supplied to long haul Cabin Crew. As you well know the airline/travel industry have been one of the industries that has been most a ff ected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the Cabin Crew took their medical skills and supported the NHS whilst grounded, supporting the vaccination roll out as vaccinators, some working as Health Care Assistants and some re- training as fi rst responders. Cabin Crew as a whole are grossly under paid, the airline I work for pay £18,608 per annum as a basic annual pay and an annual fl ight pay of no more than £3000, an over all annual salary of £21,608 – I cannot a ff ord to live comfortably on this salary, I will never be able to get a mortgage on this salary and I cannot rent alone on this salary. This is not increased due to night shifts, we are not paid extra for bank holidays and we do not even get a thanks if we deal with a serious event on board let alone a bonus. We are all aware of this, people do not go into the airline industry to earn a living they can survive on. However this is not what I am looking to raise with you, as long haul cabin crew we are paid an allowance we use to feed ourselves whilst we are “down route” but this allowance is becoming more and more di ffi cult to survive on, due to in fl ation and the increase in food prices and living costs. This allowance is in line with the world wide rate (WWR) set by the HMRC. As example; I recently had a fl ight to <insert location>. After a < fl ight length and details> (bare in mind we only get paid if the aircraft takes o ff , customer boarding, delays and check in are all unpaid) we landed into <location> at <local time>. We were given <allowance amount in dollars and pounds> to feed ourselves during the <length of layover> layover we had, this fi gure does not take into account the expected tip or tax. We have no access to a kitchen or a space to cook so all our food must be pre-made or from a restaurant, due to customs regulations we are also not able to bring our own pre-cooked meals. Below is the break down (not including tip which is expected in all destinations) of the average I have spent over the last 5 months. In the large majority of locations around the world the expected service charge starts at 20%. <YOU CAN USE THIS BREAK DOWN OR DO YOUR OWN!> Dinner: $44.93 (incl tax) tip 20% standard: $8.98 Breakfast: $28.44 (incl tax) tip 20% standard: $5.68 Lunch x 2: $60.71 (incl tax) tip 20% standard: $12.14 Snack/Miscellaneous (water/juice/co ff ee): $19.71 (incl tax) = total spend (incl tax and service charge): $180.59 I appreciate I am using an average, however please be aware that due to COVID regulations we have had to restrict our social dining and therefore cabin crew are having to use room service and local cafes and restaurants far more regularly. What I am hoping is that the WWR fi gures are looked at again, taking into account the rising living costs and food prices as well as thinking about how tax is added onto the bill and is not included within the price of the product and also that service charge is expected and sometimes added onto the bill. There has been occasions where Crew have been banned from a dining location because they have asked for the service charge to be removed from a bill. I tried fi nding a contact within HMRC but unfortunately could not fi nd the correct person so was advised to email yourself. Thank you for taking the time to read this email and I look forward to receiving your reply. Kind regards, <full name> <address and contact number>
