Visiting Douglas Hall Kennels and Taking Your Puppy Home Meeting a puppy for the first time is one of the most exciting days in any family’s year, and collection day comes a close second. If you are thinking about visiting us, this guide explains what to expect, from planning your trip to the first few days at home. Douglas Hall Kennels is a family-run breeder in Newchurch-in-Pendle, just outside Burnley in Lancashire. Before you visit We welcome visitors who are genuinely considering a puppy. There is no obligation to buy, but we do ask that visits are not made simply to cuddle the puppies, as their routine and wellbeing come first. Please check our contact page before you come, or call us on 01282 694461 to let us know you are visiting. Our visiting hours are 10am to 4pm, Monday to Sunday. Weekend and holiday afternoons between 2pm and 4pm tend to be our busiest times, so a quick call beforehand means we can give you our full attention. Allow at least 30 minutes for your visit. That gives you time to watch the puppies, see their characters and ask any questions without feeling rushed. It helps to come with a few things in mind: which breeds you are interested in, who will look after the puppy day to day, and whether there are children or other pets at home. What happens on the day When you arrive, a member of our team will greet you and talk you through the puppies available to meet. You can spend time with them, watch how they play and see which personalities stand out to you. Our puppies keep a busy routine. Their day starts early, and the litters play and socialise together each morning before any visitors arrive. By the time you meet them, they have usually had their exercise and are ready to say hello. This is the perfect moment to ask question s about the breed, the puppy’s character, feeding and what to expect over the coming weeks. Our key staff hold Level 3 awards in canine care, behaviour and welfare, and they are happy to share what they know. What your puppy goes home with Before any puppy leaves us, there are a few important steps. Puppies are health checked at 9 weeks old and receive their first vaccine, worming, flea treatment and a microchip. Our team registers your details against your puppy’s microchip with PETtrac (Avid Plc) within 7 to 14 days of handover. Every puppy also goes home with an 800g starter bag of the Royal Canin puppy food they have been eating with us, so there is no sudden change of diet. You will receive the documentation and information you need to help your puppy settle in. We do not let puppies leave us if they are undergoing treatment or showing visible signs of injury or stress. The journey home A calm journey gets your new life together off to a good start. A few simple steps help: • Bring a secure travel crate or carrier, lined with a soft towel or blanket. • If you can, bring a second adult so one person can drive while the other keeps the puppy company. • Keep the car quiet and comfortable, with the radio low and the temperature steady. • On longer journeys, plan short breaks, but keep your puppy away from areas used by unknown dogs until their vaccinations are complete. • Bring kitchen roll and a spare towel, just in case. The first few days Register your puppy with your own vet as soon as you can, and book a check-up. Keep the first few days calm, with a quiet sleeping spot, a simple routine and short, gentle introductions to family members and other pets. Feed the same food your puppy came home with, and make any changes slowly. If you have questions once you are home, you are always welcome to call our team for advice on 01282 694461.
