For example here’s how to transform "I want to lose weight next year" into a SMART goal: S - Specific Y our goals should be clear, detailed, and specific. Ask yourself: What do I want to accomplish? Why is this goal important to me? Who is involved? Where will this happen? Which resources or constraints might be involved? Example: “I want to lose 30 pounds by adopting a healthier lifestyle through consistent exercise and a balanced diet.” M - Measurable Define how you’ll measure progress and success. Having a way to track your progress keeps you motivated and focused. Ask: How much? How many? How will I know when it’s accomplished? Example: "I will track my weight weekly and aim to lose 2.5 pounds per month by exercising 4 times a week and reducing my calorie intake to 1,800 calories per day." A - Achievable Set goals that are challenging but realistic given your current resources, time, and abilities. Ask: Is this goal realistic? Do I have the tools and skills needed to achieve it? Example: "I will achieve this by following a workout plan that includes strength training and cardio, and meal prepping healthy foods each week." Notes: R - Relevant Your goals should align with your broader life values, priorities, and long-term objectives. Ask: Why is this goal important to me? Does it align with my other goals? Example: "Losing weight will help me feel more energetic, improve my overall health, and boost my confidence, aligning with my goal of living a healthier lifestyle." T - Time-Bound Set a clear deadline to create urgency and help you stay focused. Break the goal into smaller milestones if needed. Ask: What’s my deadline? What can I do today, this week, or this month to move closer to my goal? Example: "I will lose 30 pounds by December 31, breaking it into smaller milestones of 7.5 pounds every 3 months." Notes: Final SMART Goal: "I will lose 30 pounds by December 31 by exercising 4 times a week, reducing my calorie intake to 1,800 calories per day, and tracking my progress weekly. I will focus on losing 7.5 pounds every 3 months to stay on track." By breaking it down this way, the goal becomes actionable and achievable! Now it's your turn! Notes: Quarterly Goal Breakdown Q1 J A N F E B M A R Q2 A P R M A Y J U N Now that you’ve turned your aspirations into SMART goals, break them down into quarterly milestones to create realistic timelines. This allows space for life’s unexpected moments and removes the pressure to rush. Even if one month doesn’t go as planned, you still have time to refocus without feeling discouraged. At the end of each quarter, take time to reflect: what went well, what did you accomplish, and what can you improve for the next quarter? This reflection will keep you aligned, motivated, and moving forward with intention.
