Calf is still not trained to be physically separated (with a barrier/door) from mother or being tethered. Calf lines up ok for both R and L side and offers ear; starts to pull away at different times, it varies between 30-60 seconds. Sometimes calf allows spraying with alcohol and or scrubbing with dry or wet gauze. Only 1 a dull needle was used to push skin. A: Elephan't calf training has not progressed and voluntary routine blood samples, rectal exams or IM injections are not near being accomplished P: Cont. with daily veterinary training participation (desensitization) UFN Animal Care Staff Medical Summary ~ Report Start Date 01/Aug/2025 Medical History Report for All Record Types Report End Date 01/Aug/2026 Animal Type GAN Preferred ID Taxonomy Sex Birth Date Individual HBV25-02693 C50004 / Tula-Tu Elephas maximus/Asian elephant Female 01/Feb/2025 Printed: 10/Aug/2026 Oregon Zoo Copyright, Species360, 2026. Hx: Training for phlebotomy has been increased to BID in the past few days. No medical concerns reported by staff. Proc: Visual (AM and PM) Calf is BAR, with normal conformation and ambulation; no oral, ocular or nasal discharge. No evident abnormalities noted today. Blood sample: AM attempt was peformed in the ERD with mother in the same area; difficult positioning for the calf and cow. PM attempt performed in corridor with mother nearby - better set up for blood sample attempts. AM attempt- unsuccesful; callf was stationing with positive reinforcement and allowed R ear manipulation but eventually moved away and did not allowed succesful blood sample. Attempts performed with 25g butterfly with short tubing. PM blood sample: Succesful, small but diagnostic sample - Based on limited vein accesibility it was decided to use a different technique for blood sample: a 21g butterfly with long tubing used to prickle the vessel and express a blood sample that was collected in capillary-EDTA collection tubes. Glass slide prepared on site. Treatment: Rx: Phlebotomy sites were covered with diclofenac gel to minimize phlebitis in venipuncture sites. Blood evaluation: Slide stained in routine fashion and manual count evaluated by vet-tech KH. Results : Manual diff : Heterophils 31%, Immature (band) heterophils 0%, Lymphocytes 28%, Monocytes 41%, Eosinophils 0%, Basophils 0%. Note Few platelets observed but significant clotting ocurred in slide Morphology : No band or band precursors seen; no hypersegemented or toxic heterophils. Few reactive lymphocytes, few granular cytoplasms in lymphocytes/ No activated monocytes. Erythrocytes: No nRBCs observed, 2+ anisocytosis, no poikilocytosis observed. Cursory visual: Calf is BAR, normal mobility; no evident oral, nasal or ocular discharge (from a distance). No evident external abnormalities. Fully formed fecal boluses passed prior to session. Training session: Calf did well w/o tethers, remained on both L and R lateral station near the bars in the ERD. Yellow blood collection "fanny pack" was worn during session for visual desensitization. Worked with keeper TB, and the emphasis of today's desensitization was requested to be duration, with a target of holding still for a minimum of 1 min 15 sec on each ear. Discussed beginning to swab with alcohol; it was requested that this be not emphasized today. R ear- Performed an initial session; the calf stepped away after 30 seconds, but did return and stood well for 1 min. During this time, tactile with two gloved hands (one on the anterior, one on the posterior sides of the ear) was performed; circular motions and gentle nail poking was performed. L ear- Calf stood for 2 min and 30 sec; feet remained planted throughout the session; the ear was flapped away at 30 seconds but calf returned the ear immediately. Similar tactile was performed. R ear- Performed a second session; the calf stood well without pulling the ear away or stepping away for 2 min. Simliar tactile was performed. A: Apparently healthy calf, today it showed good progress towards the goal of obtaining a blood sample under positive reinforcement. Tula-Tu has been doing well and keepers report no medical concerns at this time. She has received continuous veterinary desensitization training for blood collection with positive progress the last 2 weeks. Given the volume of blood needed today (>10mls) it was elected to sedate this individual and mother (see Dr. CAB record) to perform this procedure. PHYSICAL EXAM (Abbreviated); keepers reported they found a piece of decidious molar in the feces in the past days. Weight: 552 kg (end of May 2026) GENERAL: Bright, alert, responsive and behaving normally prior to sedation EENT: Ears externally normal and free of discharge; Eyes symmetrical, clear and free of discharge; fundic exam not performed; nares free of discharge, no swelling or lesions of the trunk. ORAL (examined by keeper JM during oral sedation administration): Mucus membranes pink and moist; no evidence of cyanosis or other oral lesions observed. Complete oral exam not performed. INTEGUMENT: Visible portions of skin intact and free of lesions/abrasions. SEDATION Pre-Sedation: Patient was not fasted prior to or during sedation and had free access to hay and some fresh produce throughout procedure. Patient has been trained with a detomidine gel empty syringe for several weeks prior to this procedure. Patient (calf) and mother (Accession#:94122) were separated from the herd and moved together into the area next to the day room. Page 18 of 125 Induction: Keeper GG delivered detomidine gel (Dormosedan) 38.7 mg [7.6 mg/mL; 0.07 mg/kg; 5.1 mL] TM (sublingually) at 08:47 via modified handsyringe (curved-tip syringe with tip cut); keeper took two attempts but delivered 100% w/o any of the gel being spitted out or dropped. Patient was moved with mother to the ERD approximately 5 minutes later without signs of ataxia or sedation. Considered a 100% administration of gel. Induction Timeline: (minutes post-induction administration at 09:33 am) 7 minutes: Initial effects were noted (slower movements, slower blink) but patient retained trunk control and ate offered hay. 12:30 minutes from start: Patient conjunctiva appeared reddened and patient remained slower in movements with slow blinking. Evident sedatoin noted at this point. 14 minutes: Trunk control
