A sleepy baby, a beautiful backdrop, perfect little details, and the shutter click. But there is quite a bit happening behind the scenes before that photograph is ever taken. A newborn photography session is a combination of preparation, patience (a lot of it), gentle posing, careful observation, and, above all, baby safety . Every little detail, from the room temperature to how a baby is positioned, is intentional. Here is a little peek behind the scenes by your Houston Newborn Photographer of what goes into creating those beautiful newborn portraits. B E F O R E T H E S E S S I O N : P R E P A R A T I O N S T A R T S L O N G B E F O R E Y O U A R R I V E One of my favorite parts of newborn photography is the planning that happens before the actual session. Every family receives guidance on how to prepare for their baby’s session, including what to bring, feeding, and what to expect during our time together. We also talk about colors, styling, and the overall look you envision for your baby’s portraits. For studio sessions, I prepare the props, wraps, outfits, backdrops, and accessories ahead of time. If we are incorporating family members, siblings, or specific sentimental items, those details are planned in advance as well. This preparation allows us to spend less time figuring things out during the session and more time simply enjoying your baby. And yes, there is usually a lot more stuff behind the scenes than you see in the final photograph! C R E A T I N G A S A F E E N V I R O N M E N T F O R Y O U R B A B Y The most important part of any newborn session isn’t the backdrop, the prop, or even the photograph. It’s your baby. Newborns are still developing their ability to regulate their body temperature and support their head and neck. They also cannot reliably communicate when they are uncomfortable. That means a newborn photographer needs to constantly observe and respond to the baby’s cues. I keep the studio comfortably warm for the baby, while also making sure parents and siblings are comfortable. Before using any prop, I check that it is stable and appropriate for newborn photography. Fabrics and wraps are positioned carefully, and baby’s head and airway are always a priority. There is no pose or photograph that is more important than your baby’s safety. N O T E V E R Y B E A U T I F U L N E W B O R N P H O T O G R A P H H A P P E N S I N O N E T A K E Some of the most artistic newborn portraits may look completely effortless, but a lot is happening just outside the frame. For example, you may see a beautiful image of a baby peacefully resting in a basket or delicate prop. What you don’t see is the assistant or parent providing support just outside the frame, or the additional precautions taken to make sure the setup remains secure. Some images are also created by combining multiple photographs during editing. This is especially important for poses where a baby appears to be balancing, resting in an unusual position, or surrounded by elements that could potentially move. Never attempt a newborn pose at home simply because it looks easy in a photograph. A professional newborn photographer should know when a pose requires additional support, when a composite image is appropriate, and just as importantly, when a pose should simply be skipped. G E N T L E P O S I N G : F O L L O W I N G T H E B A B Y , N O T F O R C I N G T H E B A B Y One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that the photographer simply puts the baby into a pose and takes the picture. In reality, newborn posing requires patience – a lot of patience. Every baby is different. Some babies settle quickly. Some need to be fed several times. Some love being wrapped. Others strongly disagree with the entire concept! And that’s okay. I never want a baby to feel like we are racing through a checklist of poses. Instead, I watch the baby’s movements, expressions, sleep patterns, and comfort level and work with them. Sometimes the simplest pose ends up being my favorite photograph. A tiny yawn. A little stretch. Those wrinkly feet. A hand resting underneath a cheek. The way a baby curls naturally when they are completely relaxed. Those fleeting details are often the photographs parents treasure most. F E E D I N G , S O O T H I N G & B R E A K S A R E P A R T O F T H E S E S S I O N Newborn sessions are not timed like a corporate headshot session. Babies don’t wear watches, and they certainly don’t care about our schedule! If your baby is hungry, we stop and feed. If they need a diaper change, we stop. If they need to be held, rocked, or soothed, we take the time. Sometimes a baby needs several breaks throughout the session, and that is completely normal. I would much rather spend an extra few minutes helping a baby settle than rush through a pose simply to stay on schedule. Those pauses are also a wonderful opportunity for parents to slow down and enjoy their newborn. W H A T P A R E N T S D O N ’ T S E E B E H I N D T H E C A M E R A During a newborn session, I’m constantly looking at more than just the camera. I’m watching: Baby’s head and neck position Breathing and airway Body temperature and comfort Skin tone and facial expressions Hand and foot positioning How securely the baby is supported Whether a wrap or prop needs adjusting How siblings are interacting with the baby Lighting and shadows The composition of the photograph At the same time, I’m thinking about the final image – how the baby’s tiny features, the family’s connection, the colors, and the surroundings will all come together. It’s a lot to pay attention to at once. But that attention to detail is what helps create portraits that feel effortless when you finally see them. F A M I L Y & S I B L I N G P O R T R A I T S R E Q U I R E E X T R A C A R E When siblings are involved, safety becomes even more important. Young children are unpredictable – and that’s not criticism. They’re children! I never expect a toddler to sit perfectly still or understand why they need to hold a tiny newborn a certain way. Instead, I use age-appropriate setups and keep an adult close by whenever needed. Sometimes the best sibling photograph isn’t the perfectly posed one. It might be a toddler gently touching their new baby’s toes. A curious little face peeking over the blanket. A proud big brother or sister sitting beside the baby. Those little interactions tell the story of what it was like when your family grew by one. T H E F I N A L P H O T O G R A P H I S O N L Y P A R T O F T H E P R O C E S S Once the session is finished, the work continues. Newborn photography requires careful editing to preserve the baby’s natural features while creating the polished, timeless look associated with fine-art portraiture. But editing should never replace good preparation, safe posing, thoughtful lighting, or genuine connection. The beautiful final image you see is really the result of many small decisions made before and during the session. From choosing the right backdrop to carefully positioning a tiny hand, from waiting for the perfect sleepy expression to knowing when a baby needs a break – the photograph begins long before I press the shutter. W H Y I T A K E N E W B O R N S A F E T Y S O S E R I O U S L Y Newborn photography is a privilege. Parents trust me with the most precious little person in their world, often when their baby is only days or weeks old. That trust means more to me than getting a particular pose or checking every photograph off a shot list. If a baby isn’t comfortable with a pose, we move on. If something doesn’t feel safe, we don’t do it. And if the perfect photograph requires patience, we take the time. Because years from now, I want you to look at your newborn portraits and remember how tiny your baby was, not worry about how we got the photograph. The safest newborn photograph is always the most important photograph. And sometimes, the simplest image becomes the one you love the most.
