FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Julian Goldstein, (202) 239-9282 Community Liaison Rep. Oye joins Congresswoman Norton to Oppose latest GOP attack on DC Washington, DC —US Representative Oye Owolewa (DC) joins Delegate Eleanor Holmes-Norton (DC) to condemn the actions of the House Republicans following another partisan attempt to further disenfranchise DC residents. This time, Representative Rodney Davis (IL) introduced House Bill 8528 that aims to disrupt the electoral process in the District of Columbia. Mr. Davis, neither a voter, elected official or resident of DC, has introduced another GOP bill to take away the limited voting rights established by then President Richard NIxon. Currently, DC residents pay federal income taxes without congressional representation and lack full control over their city’s resources and budget. Lastly, DC is the only place in America where local laws can be overruled by Congress. The only path for full citizenship for DC residents is to achieve statehood. “I stand with Congresswoman Norton in opposition to this latest political stunt to deny equality for us DC residents” says Rep Oye “This latest bill is not only undemocratic, but also unamerican. We cannot allow GOP elected officials to interfere and threaten our ways of life to score political points. I call on those living outside of their District to ensure their congress members vote down and sink this bill. As a nation, we must defeat voting suppressing legislation, achieve DC Statehood and complete our democracy.” Our office stands in solidarity as Delegate Holmes-Norton announces the House Committee on Oversight and Reform will mark up the DC Home Rule Expansion Act to give DC the exclusive authority to prosecute DC crimes, grant clemency, and eliminate the congressional review period for DC legislation. The DC Home Rule Expansion Act would give D.C. the same authority states and territories have over certain local governmental functions. ### Release Date: September 23, 2022
