Riding on the wave of SF blockbusters that followed the success of STAR WARS? it wa s ? in fact~ the fulfilrnont of a long-standing ambition of its creator 9 · Glen A 1arson 9 to create his ovm SF s eries in the tradition of Gene Roddenberry' s' STAR TREK. BG was originally intended as a 7-hour miniseries 9 budgeted at a then unprecedented /31 million per hour 9 with special effects created by the acknowledged master of tbe format 9 John Dykstra 9 o.nd state-of-the-art computer technology by Tektroni : 1.. ,_ ccording to some source s 9 j_ t had first been scheduled for release in Hay of 1978 a nd was held back for additional post-production work 9 a ll of which added not only t o the overaJl effect 9 lJut also to the budg et. The three-hour premiere ('S ag a of a Star World') and two two-hour movies ('Lost Planet of the Gods' and 'The Gun on lee Planet Zero') proved sufficiently successful that the network decided to take the format to a full series§ ultimately BG ran to 24 ep isodes (17 stories) 9 but a comlJination of factors - its high cost 9 only moderate success in the ratings 1 l a ck of critic a l acclaim 9 un popularity vii tb network heads - led to its failure to be renewed for a second season , Many feel that a second s eason would have ironed out m any of the flaws in the series that its rushed transition from mini- to full series status caused~ but this? of course, m ay be merG wishful thinking. Even allowing for the flaws 9 which include some astonishing scientific lapses 9 lack of background detail 9 overuse of the same special effects 9 poorly designed exterior sets (diszuised rather clums ily by having most of the 'planets' our heroes visited ex ist in a state of permanent semi-darkness) and some Vieak 9 badly-sustained jJ lotlines 9 BG nonetheless produced more than its fair share of classic ep isodes - a nd even its worst episodes still h cc ve their good points. Ten ye a rs on 9 it's still being rerun on US TV? a nd , ten years on 9 its fandom is as strong as ever.
