Springen, Fallen, Spritzen und Explodieren sind Flüchtigkeitsphänomene, die in jüngerer Geschichte durch mediale Inszenierungen Sensationswert erhalten haben und unser kulturelles Bildbewusstsein prägen. Auf der Grundlage einer kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Bildwissenschaft rekonstruiert der Autor Ursprung und Wandel von Plötzlichkeitsmotiven, um die daraus entstehenden Semantiken und Faszinationseffekte zu ermitteln. Ausgehend von Beispielen aus der wissenschaftlichen, populärkulturellen, journalistischen und Mode-Ikonografie werden Produktionen des visuell Außergewöhnlichen verfolgt sowie überraschende Verbindungen zwischen unterschiedlichen Visualitätskulturen aufgezeigt. Ein reiches Bildmaterial belegt eindrucksvoll, wie Aufzeichnungsmedien an der Herstellung von modernen Ereigniserfahrungen teilhaben.

There is an emergent movement of scientists and scholars working on somatic awareness, interoception and embodiment. This work cuts across studies of neurophysiology, somatic anthropology, contemplative practice, and mind-body medicine. Key questions include: How is body awareness cultivated? What role does interoception play for emotion and cognition in healthy adults and children as well as in different psychopathologies? What are the neurophysiological effects of this cultivation in practices such as Yoga, mindfulness meditation, Tai Chi and other embodied contemplative practices? What categories from other traditions might be useful as we explore embodiment? Does the cultivation of body awareness within contemplative practice offer a tool for coping with suffering from conditions, such as pain, addiction, and dysregulated emotion? This emergent field of research into somatic awareness and associated interoceptive processes, however, faces many obstacles. The principle obstacle lies in our 400-year Cartesian tradition that views sensory perception as epiphenomenal to cognition. The segregation of perception and cognition has enabled a broad program of cognitive science research, but may have also prevented researchers from developing paradigms for understanding how interoceptive awareness of sensations from inside the body influences cognition. The cognitive representation of interoceptive signals may play an active role in facilitating therapeutic transformation, e.g. by altering context in which cognitive appraisals of well-being occur. This topic has ramifications into disparate research fields: What is the role of interoceptive awareness in conscious presence? How do we distinguish between adaptive and maladaptive somatic awareness? How do we best measure somatic awareness? What are the consequences of dysregulated somatic/interoceptive awareness on cognition, emotion, and behavior? The complexity of these questions calls for the creative integration of perspectives and findings from related but often disparate research areas including clinical research, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, anthropology, religious/contemplative studies and philosophy.

The debate on universals has been stimulated by advances in cultural studies and the humanities in general. Considering literature as a universal feature that can be found in any culture, the question is: a) what are the characteristics of literature as an anthropological constant? b) which specific occurrences of literature can be found in different times, cultures and languages – and how is it possible to compare them? c) How has literature been able to mediate over time between different cultures and their often opposing concepts? The wide field of literature transgressing and bridging borders comes into play here, e.g. translations, multilingual and “intercultural” literatures, travel journals and ethnographic interpretations. The main part of the anthology highlights the interplay of cultural impregnation and a universal motivation to express oneself by means of literature – by theoretical approaches as well as by studies with a view on German literature from the outside and/or a focus on the representation of the world in German literary texts. The closing chapter, “intercultural text workshop” enables the reader to gain insight into an ever more important feature of present-day literature: texts from authors who deliberately opted for German as their literary language - Marica Bodrožić, Tzveta Sofronieva, Yoko Tawada, José F.A. Dabei wird auch das weite Feld literarischer Grenzenüberschreitungen und Brückengänge angeschnitten: Übersetzungen, polyglotte oder „interkulturelle“ Literaturen, Reise- und ethnographische Berichte. Der Hauptteil des Bandes widmet sich dem Wechselspiel von kultureller Geprägtheit und universalem literarischen Ausdruckswillen – theoretisch fundiert; in Beispielanalysen mit Blick von außen auf die deutschsprachige Literatur sowie in der Frage nach der Repräsentation von Welt in Texten der deutschsprachigen Literatur.
