<P>Das Weismann'sche "Teutsch-Lateinisch-Rußische Lexicon, Samt Denen Anfangs-Gründen der Rußischen Sprache" ist für die Lexikographie der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jh. nach Polikarpovs "Leksikon trejazičnyj, SPb. 1704" eine der wichtigsten Quellen überhaupt. Besonders reich ist das Wörterbuch an phraseologischen und sprichwortartigen Ausdrücken. Von gleicher Bedeutung ist das Werk aufgrund seines Anhangs. Das dortige, anonym verfaßte grammatische Traktat " Anfangs-Gründe der Rußischen Sprache" (48 S.) hat für die Grammatikentwicklung im 18. Toisessa osassa käsitellään Pyhän Henrikin pyhimyskultin syntyä ja ajoitusta. Kolmannessa osassa pyritään rekonstruoimaan ja ajoittamaan Piispa Henrikin surmavirreksi kutsuttu vanha suomenkielinen runo(laulu). Kaikissa kolmessa osassa käsitellään myös kirkollisen ja kansanomaisen Henrik-perinteen ajallista kehitystä. Herra Heinärikkiä jäljittäessään Heikkilän teos käsittelee Pohjois-Euroopan varhaiskeskiajan yleis-, kieli- ja kirkkohistoriaa laajemminkin.

Candida, a comedy by playwright George Bernard Shaw, was written in 1894 and first published in 1898, as part of his Plays Pleasant. The central characters are clergyman James Morell, his wife Candida and a youthful poet, Eugene Marchbanks, who tries to win Candida's affections. The play questions Victorian notions of love and marriage, asking what a woman really desires from her husband. The cleric is a Christian Socialist, allowing Shaw—himself a Fabian Socialist—to weave political issues, current at the time, into the story. Shaw attempted but failed to have a London production of the play put on in the 1890s, but there were two small provincial productions. However, in late 1903 actor Arnold Daly had such a great success with the play that Shaw would write by 1904 that New York was seeing "an outbreak of Candidamania". The Royal Court Theatre in London performed the play in six matinees in 1904. The same theatre staged several other of Shaw's plays from 1904 to 1907, including further revivals of Candida. This book challenges conventional wisdoms both about economic performance and about policies for economic development in African countries. Its starting point is the striking variation in economic performance: unevenness and inequalities form a central fact. The authors highlight not only differences between African countries but also variations within countries, differences often organized around distinctions of gender, class, and ethnic identity. For example, school dropout and neonatal mortality have been reduced, particularly for some classes of women in some areas. Horticultural and agribusiness exports have grown far more rapidly in some countries than others. These variations (and many others) point to opportunities for changing performance, reducing inequalities, learning from other African policy experiences, and escaping the ties of structure and legacies of a colonial past. The book rejects teleological illusions and Eurocentric prejudice, but does pay close attention to the results of policy in more industrialized parts of the world. Seeing the contradictions of capitalism for what they are—fundamental and enduring—may help policy officials protect themselves against the misleading idea that development is likely to be a smooth, linear process, or that it would be were certain impediments removed. The authors criticize a wide range of orthodox and heterodox economists, especially for their cavalier attitude to statistical sources. Drawing on decades of research and policy experience, they combine careful use of available evidence from a range of African countries with heterodox political economy insights (mainly derived from Kalecki, Kaldor, and Hirschman) to make the policy case for specific types of public sector investment.

With a specific focus on travel narratives, this collection looks at how Islamic and eastern cultural threads were weaved, through travel and trading networks, into Western European/Christian visual culture and discourse and, ultimately, into the artistic explosion which has been labeled the “Renaissance.” Scholars from across humanities disciplines examine Islamic, Jewish, Spanish, Italian, and English works from a truly comparative and non-parochial perspective, to explore the transfer through travel of cultural and religious values and artistic and scientific practices, from the eleventh to the seventeenth centuries. During this period travel, military conquest and trade through the Mediterranean placed Western European citizens and merchants in contact with Islamic and eastern technology and culture, and travel narratives illustrate the converging and pragmatic dynamics of cultural acceptance. Perhaps the spread of “Renaissance” values and beliefs might have followed a trajectory the reverse of what is generally assumed, and that salient aspects of Renaissance culture traveled from the fringes of Islamic and eastern cultures to the midst of hegemonically Christian polities.
