Chapter 3: Buddha’s teachings as medicine It is 1999. The digits on the clock reads 8.10pm. The phone rings. A familiar voice drifts out from the phone. “Why are you not attending teaching?” It is Singha Rinpoche. He does not sound pleased. I make up some lame excuse and he brushes it off. "Come now,” he says. My spouse and I arrive and try to sneak in unnoticed. It is extremely difficult as there are less than a dozen students and the room is small. Lama (that’s what we called him then) – his face is unsmiling and clearly very annoyed. He says nothing and we all look uncomfortable. Unlike the usual times, he sits on the floor this time and not on the sofa (teaching throne). At that time Lama had just begun to teach, so each student had agreed that we would make a monthly offering to him. We were in effect his “sponsors”. This did not influence him, because for about an hour that evening, we all received the most severe scolding any of us had experienced in some time (we were all older than him by at least 10 years). However, what he said left a deep impression - he told us we were taking the Buddhadharma and our precious human life for granted. We were ignorant in not realizing we could die at any time so we behaved like we could live forever, not cherishing the fact that we were receiving something even more valuable than all the precious metals on Earth. We were receiving dharma teachings. I asked Rinpoche recently why at that time, in 1999, he had never seemed concerned about the fact that the students he was reprimanding might leave or stop making offerings. He said the thought never crossed his mind. It was important for him that he not give up on us and he had to be brave and care - and get through to us. And if scolding was the means, he would do that. Regrettably, the partings did happen. Over the years students and disciples left, mistaking the scolding to be really that and not realizing the care and love behind it. If ever, you feel you are being “scolded” by Rinpoche, please try your best to view that as a blessing, a gesture of caring, a medicine that will benefit – perhaps bitter but beneficial. This book reconsiders the role of order and structure in syntax, focusing on fundamental issues such as word order and grammatical functions. The first group of papers in the collection asks what word order can tell us about syntactic structure, using evidence from V2, object shift, word order gaps and different kinds of movement. The second group of papers all address the issue of subjecthood in some way, and examine how certain subject properties vary across languages: expression of subjects, expletive subjects, quirky and locative subjects. All of the papers address in some way the tension between modelling what can vary across languages whilst improving our understanding of what might be universal to human language.

Analysis imposes substantial challenges, especially when dealing with analytes present at trace levels in complex matrices. Although modern instrumentation has simplified analyses and makes them more reliable, its use is only the last step of the whole analytical process. On the other hand, sample preparation still represents the bottleneck in many analytical methods and often requires the use of extensive protocols before instrumental analysis. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a well-established sample-prep technique for simultaneous extraction and pre-concentration of compounds from a variety of matrices. Given its compliance with the principles of green analytical chemistry, as well as the simplicity, versatility, and availability of different formats, SPME addresses several challenges associated with the traditional sample preparation approaches and allows for a substantial streamlining of the analytical workflow. This book is the reprint of a Special Issue that includes six contributions provided by some of the world’s leading research groups in the field and focuses on recent advances in solid-phase microextraction.

In the last few decades, research on the elaboration by palladium-catalytic processes of C-C bonds or the activation of C–H bonds has increased considerably. Yet there is still room for much improvement in terms of selectivity, or enantioselectivity, via the development of new ligands or the study of the catalytic effect of other metals to carry out the same chemical transformations. In addition, the attention paid to environmentally friendly methods in terms of the quantities of catalysts, ligands, and solvents is currently indispensable. The Mizoroki-Heck reaction is one of these important catalytic methods which generates C-C bonds in organic synthesis and is also possible by C-H activation. This book, titled “Catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck Reaction or C-H activation” focuses on new advances in the formation of C-C bonds or new C-H activation methods. It contains original research papers and short reviews on the synthesis of biologically active compounds using these catalytic processes, the identification of new catalysts, of new conditions allowing selectivity or enantioselectivity, the activity and stability of catalyst under turnover conditions, and all improvements in catalytic processes.

He is reputed to have been reading a comic book when he died.

What causes a language to be the way it is? Some features are universal, some are inherited, others are borrowed, and yet others are internally innovated. But no matter where a bit of language is from, it will only exist if it has been diffused and kept in circulation through social interaction in the history of a community. This book makes the case that a proper understanding of the ontology of language systems has to be grounded in the causal mechanisms by which linguistic items are socially transmitted, in communicative contexts. A biased transmission model provides a basis for understanding why certain things and not others are likely to develop, spread, and stick in languages. Because bits of language are always parts of systems, we also need to show how it is that items of knowledge and behavior become structured wholes. The book argues that to achieve this, we need to see how causal processes apply in multiple frames or 'time scales' simultaneously, and we need to understand and address each and all of these frames in our work on language. This forces us to confront implications that are not always comfortable: for example, that "a language" is not a real thing but a convenient fiction, that language-internal and language-external processes have a lot in common, and that tree diagrams are poor conceptual tools for understanding the history of languages. By exploring avenues for clear solutions to these problems, this book suggests a conceptual framework for ultimately explaining, in causal terms, what languages are like and why they are like that.
