Compound Machine Design Report for XYZ Inc. 1. Diagram of the Proposed Compound Machine Our proposed compound machine is a Pulley - Assisted Ramp System. It combines a cart on an inclined plane connected to a block and tackle pulley. 2. Simple Machines Used and Their Mechanical Advantages (MA) To make lifting a 500 kg crate easy, we combined three simple machines: • Inclined Plane (Ramp): Instead of lifting the crate straight up 2 meters, we will use an 8 - meter long ramp. (MA = Length / Height = 8 / 2 = 4) • Wheel and Axle (Cart): The crate is placed on a heavy - duty cart. The wheels drastically reduce friction so the box can roll smoothly up the ramp. • Block and Tackle (Pulley System): We will install a pulley system at the top of the ramp with 4 supporting ropes. (MA = 4) Because we combined the ramp and the pulley, the Total Mechanical Advantage is multiplied: Total MA = 4 x 4 = 16. 3. Calculation of Effort Required First, we need to find the actual weight (force) of the 500 kg crate in Newtons. Using gravity (9.8 m/s²): FL = 500 kg x 9.8 m/s² = 4900 N With our Total MA of 16, we can calculate the effort force (FE) the worker needs to pull the crate up: FE = FL / Total MA FE = 4900 N / 16 = 306.25 N Explanation: A force of 306.25 N is roughly the same effort as lifting just a 31 kg object. The machine minimizes the effort by stretching the work over a longer distance (the 8 - meter ramp) and using multiple ropes (the pulley) to share the heavy load. 4. Justification This Pulley - Assisted Ramp System is the most suitable solution for XYZ Inc. because it is incredibly cost - effective. We don't need to buy expensive, high - maintenance robotic forklifts or electric elevators. Wood or steel for a ramp, a heavy - duty cart, and a manual block - and - tackle pulley are cheap to install and require almost zero electricity or maintenance. Furthermore, it completely protects the workers from back injuries, as one or two workers can easily and safely pull a massive 500 kg crate up to the production floor with minimal physical strain.
