Wabun - The Japanese Morse Code Explained Morse code conquered the world, but not unchanged. In Japan it grew a second alphabet: the Wabun code, built for the kana syllabary and worked by generations of naval operators. Why a second code Japanese does not use Latin letters, so international Morse alone could not carry it. Wabun assigned a dot-dash pattern to each kana character, letting operators send native text at full speed. Two codes, one service An Imperial Navy operator lived in Wabun; a merchant operator lived in the international code. After the war, Japanese amateurs preserved Wabun as living heritage - it is still heard on the bands.
