The word furniture comes from the French word ‘fourniture’, which means equipment. Furniture is an equipment designed to support human life in their day-to-day activities such as seating - chair, stool, storing - wardrobes, chests of drawers, etc. Furniture makes a place suitable for living, also making it look aesthetically pleasing which makes it one of the strong components of a space. Catagories of Furniture Fixed & loose furniture Seating Storage Table Sleeping Usability: Area(living room, bedroom etc.) Takes up less space More safe and secure - no chance to trip over or fall on someone Give more aesthetic appeal due to being highly polished and refined. Customized according to the space available hence high quality. Inflexible More expensive Requires professional installation Fixed and Loose Furniture Fixed Furniture: Furniture that is attached to the structure of the space which cannot be moved or displaced. Examples - built-in cabinets, wardrobes, beds, backdrops etc. Furniture can be fixed by using different hardware equipment such as Hinges, brackets, L-Hooks, screws, etc. Glue can also be used in cases where you don’t want to do holes in your structure to secure the furniture. Benefits - Disadvantages - 08 Flexible Less costly Easy installation Generally mass-produced furniture - can find one piece in multiple places Have to set it according to the size available in the market. Hazardous for safety purposes - someone can easily tip or knock over. Fixed and Loose Furniture Loose Furniture: Furniture that can easily be moved around without being restricted to one space. Examples - Sofa, chairs, central table, console, etc. Benefits - Disadvantages - 09 Usability Seating furniture - Furniture that is used for seating purposes such as - chairs, stools, benches, sofa etc. Seating area is one of the major highlights of the space which also defines the space particularly. Types of seating furniture - Single Seating Furniture - Typically used for one person to sit. Example - chair, armchair, recliner etc. It is used to give more comfortable seating, provides intimacy and can also be used as a section in the room. Single seating can also become one of the highlights of a space. Multiple Seating Furniture - Furniture used by more than one person at a time. Eg - 2 seater sofa, 3 seater sofa, bench, etc. 10 Usability Storage - Storage furniture provides a basic physical enclosure to containerize collections and make it possible to contain multiple items within a room or structure. Variations in storage furniture result from an institution's historical continuity, function, organization, and how collections are used. Table -A table is a piece of furniture with a flat top supported by one or more legs. We put things on a table, often for a short time, for example, food and knives and forks, etc. at a meal, cups for drinks, a book, a map, writing paper when writing, and things for hobbies. Sleeping - Considered the most important piece of furniture in the house, sleeping furniture is the furniture used for sleeping purposes by humans such as bed. 11 Neolithic Period – The Neolithic period, (approximately 5,500-2,500 B.C.), gave the world the first documented instances of furniture being used in ancient times; Orkney, Scotland is where stone dressers and cupboards originated for the purposes of storage. The Classical World – From the 9th-8th Century B.C., in Ancient Egypt and Greece, the most popular forms of furniture were beds found within tombs of Queens and Pharaohs to rest their deceased bodies upon, as well as chairs and wooden headrests in lieu of pillows for common Ancient Egyptians. Early Modern Europe – Furniture from 500-1500 A.D. (Or ‘Medieval furniture‘), was designed in European. Chairs were popular for seating and were often made of heavy oak with exquisite artistic designs. 19th Century – Between the years of 1801-1900, 19th Century furniture was very artistic and detailed. Gothic styles were popular and chairs often had fancy cut-out designs. The intricately designed chairs were often used by the wealthy at dinners. Early North American – Early North American furniture dates to the early 20th century in America, furniture was more basic and made of necessity versus fancy artistic and detailed designs; basic dressers for storage and simplistic chairs and stools for sitting were often made of wood such as cherry or walnut as they were easily bent with a steaming process. History of Furniture 12 Early North American – Early North American furniture dates to the early 20th century in America, furniture was more basic and made of necessity versus fancy artistic and detailed designs; basic dressers for storage and simplistic chairs and stools for sitting were often made of wood such as cherry or walnut as they were easily bent with a steaming process. Modernism – In post World War II (1945 & after), simple, sleek furniture designs were influenced by artists and designers with roots in Germany (Marcel Breuer), France (Eileen Gray), Spain (Lilly Reich) and Japan (Isamu Noguchi); chairs representing basic seating needs in combination with artistic designs became very popular in this era. Ecodesign – Ecodesign can be traced back to the 1920’s, in America, when people became somewhat aware of the toll some materials can take on the environment though it‘s popularity did not blossom until the 1960‘s; furniture in Ecodesign is increasingly popular in modern days as it uses resources that are quickly grown and replaced such as bamboo, bamboo tables (kitchen tables as well as simple coffee tables) are popular examples of Ecodesign furniture used for holding items, without draining Earth‘s resources. Contemporary – Contemporary furniture refers to all modern or recent furniture designs, (from the 1970’s onward), from all over the world, aluminum and iron furniture are popular materials used in sleek and geometric contemporary designs; iron kitchen/dining room tables are amongst the most popular styles. History of Furniture 13 14 Sustainability - Sustainable materials for furniture designed to last long and bring no damage to the environment are becoming more popular. In this sense, consider natural materials, renewable materials, and non-toxic materials. The manufacturer can provide all this information. Furthermore, the nature-inspired furniture has an authentic look and brings nature closer by refreshing any interior design and complementing the particular style with trendy texture. Use of different geometrical shapes and sizes - Unlike the furniture from previous seasons, mostly regarded as minimalist and unobtrusive, with a great influence from clean lines and sharp verges, the new 2023 furniture slightly turns to sophisticated forms that draw the eye and visually enhance the space. A favorite is a curved furniture, although various geometric shapes are pretty much acceptable. As regards the size, imposing pieces of furniture are in high demand. As designers state, they lend a stately sense of luxury and functionality simultaneously. Multifunctional furniture - With the increasing awareness and current trend of working from home, people have shifted to buying multifunctional furniture for space instead of investing separately in everything. CHAPTER 2 DESIGN BRIEF 16 17 DESIGN BRIEF Sustainable Minimalist Highly functional With the fast-paced modern world, people have shifted to use more minimalist yet functional furniture. Hence, being inspired by the Scandinavian furniture style for the same, I have decided to design a single seating furniture, i.e., a chair on the same theme. To make the product more appealing and comfortable, different kinds of materials will be used keeping in mind the factor of sustainability. While a chair is widely used in all places, making it sleek and comfortable must be considered while designing it. Key Pointers -
