Call for Papers 15 th APRIL CONFERENCE Humanit y/Humanities Institute of English Studies, Jagiellonian University Kraków , 2 0 - 2 2 April 202 3 THEME SESSION: THE WAR IN UKRAINE: STANCE, IDENTITY, LEADERS H IP SESSION ORGANISERS : Magdalena Szczyrbak , Jagiellonian University Anna Tereszkiewicz, Jagiellonian University Valentyna Ushchyna , Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 sent shockwaves around the globe In response to the aggression, m any governments, politicians and ordinary citizens made efforts to aid the people of Ukraine and called for a restoration of peace. Seven months on, there is no end in sight for the war, and many social actors are stepping up their efforts to achieve a peaceful solution to the crisis. As the war unfolds , it receives extensive media coverage , including frontline reports and eyewitness accounts . Parallel to this, social media are awash in pictures, videos and satellite images of war - stricken areas , and abuzz with comments and discussions which articulate anti - war stances At the same time, social media platforms are used to spread propaganda and misinformation , which has turned the Russia - Ukraine conflict into a fully - blown social media war. Our session aims to bring together linguists, discourse analysts and communication scholars exploring various facets of discourses on/ of war and war - related communication The session is conceived as a discussion forum for participants who apply various analytical models and who adopt diverse research perspectives , including discourse analysis, pragmatics, sociolinguistic s , critical discourse studies, media studies, multimodality and socia l semiotic s. We welcome contributions addressing the concepts of stance, identity and leadership in discourses on/of war , but submissions focusing on the war in Ukraine are particularly encouraged.
