However, I feel that the project should be a class choice, with the facilitator just making sure that it is discussed from day one, with a goal of making a project decision by the December class. In that scenario, I would add a short “things to consider list”, which looks like SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable (or affordable), Relevant, and Time Based. The SMART goals session could be in November in preparation for the December decision. It is too early in the beginning of the class to even know the issues for many participants. I have literally watched them go “ah-ha” after a specific speaker or topic. The “to-consider” list could also state that the project can not benefit the employer of a participant. (board members or volunteers could advance a project). The facilitator cannot influence the project, other than offering the “things to consider” list and running any ideas through the SMART process and keeping them on track to decide on the project. I have five reasons for my thoughts on this: 1. The class buy-in is sure to be better if they come up with it. The board does not know the class passions, contacts, or capabilities. I feel that they should coalesce on something that they believe in. I am not in a position, as a board member, to evaluate what they can or should do. 2. Part of leadership is discussion an issue and coming up with a plan, consensus building, and making compromises. The class project is an excellent way to showcase that. If no decision is being made, the facilitator should come up with some creative ways of bringing ideas to the class – reviewing agendas from past classes? Submitting ideas in secret? Asking a speaker to come back to flesh out an idea? Conducting a survey through their individual channels? Keep the focus on making the class figure it out. 3. Didn’t we just move the discussion and controversy (and biases) around the class project from the class - to the board? We didn’t solve it, we just moved it. I have never seen any disagreement among our board until the class project fell to us. It is important that we stay unbiased and that we work together for the good of the class, not ourselves. I’ve observed strong board member feelings and impatience – I support the project that was selected this time, but honestly it DOES involve a board member and that person’s work. So.....we just did, as a board, what we would advised the class to not do. 4. Our role as a board is to create leaders for non-profit and civic organizations. By taking applications and rejecting all but one, our board becomes a “judge” of non-profit work and tells them that they are not as important as other ones in the community. Why would we want to do that? Why would we want Leadership Rutherford to be represented that way, and why would we send a letter to say “you were not chosen” for a class project. Although I was the supporter for letting them know they were not chosen, I did not want to be identified as someone who made that decision by my involvement with the board. I think that having them fill out an application and being “rejected” is detrimental to our mission to support the work of non-profits and civic organizations. Why would they be open to adding a graduate of LR to their board, or perhaps their leadership team, when they were negatively impacted by us? 5. The board should be almost invisible to the class, in my opinion, other than making sure their program is planned well, financially sound, and that the facilitator is providing what is expected, and that we serve as cheerleaders for the class success. Clear roles between the board and operations are key to any organization. I think we are getting way too deep in the weeds. I don’t want to be telling the class what they can and can’t decide to support and how they approach it. I know we will come to a conclusion on this, and I will, of course, support whatever is decided. This whole thing has just bothered me a lot. I never want to be that “we’ve always done it this way” person, but I think the board is working too hard to fix something that is the effect of the class not doing their work.
