It showcases the value of coinage, as a testament to an era, political situation and cultural context, and, so, takes on a universal approach to numismatics. The coin collection is impressive in its completion. It contains nine centuries of Portuguese coinage, with pieces from the 7th century BCE, when coin stamping started to appear, to the present time. Expansive not only in time but space, with examples from Portugal to Japan. He is connected to Terceira Island through genealogy. His connection to Angra do Heroísmo, however, is emotional, as he has lived here since 1959. Angra was, for three centuries, a mandatory stop for ships travelling from India, the Middle East, Brazil, Africa and South America. It's due to this cosmopolitan tradition that Professor Thomaz entrusted it to the Angra do Heroísmo Museum. This collection has received an Honorable Mention from the Portuguese Institute of Museums. His work focuses on the interaction between issues of gender, sexuality, provocation and art. This large-format painting sequence presents, in openly graphic language, images of police and paramilitary forces in action in varied demonstration scenarios. Its title evokes Zeca Afonso's famous protest song O que faz falta!, from which it explores social control imagery through clear viola- tions of social dignity and basic human rights implied in social and democratic existence. Temporary Exhibitions Agenda june 2022 Communication in Terceira Island Amateur Radio and the Cold War April 9th to July 3rd Saint Francis Building, Capítulo Gallery Temporary Exhibitions 27 Prazer do Espírito e do Olhar Scenery and Travel through Portuguese Arte, Coleção Arquipélago May 14th to September 11th, Dacosta Gallery Agenda june 2022 Angra do Heroísmo Museum's radiocommunication collection's richness and diversity is the result, in part, of two important donations made in recent years. One donation by Victor Jorge Pamplona Ramos (1937) and the other by João Fernando Goulart Bettencourt Pereira Porto's heirs. They made the present exhibition possible, which includes a representative selection of radion communications' evolution. It emphasizes not only amateur radio amateurism but also certain episodes in Terceira Island's history, in a Cold War context. This exhibition represents, therefore, a tribute to all the professionals and amateurs who dedicate themselves to radio communications. It also gives special mention to Vitor Ramos and João Porto's professionalism and dedication with which they exercised, throughout their lives, these activities. This travelling exhibition, produced by Arquipélago| Contemporary Art Centre, explores the affinities that connect different Contempo- rary Art objects. It searches for a well-circumscribed sense, which identifies and gives the collection coherence. At the same time, it asso- ciates itself with the identity of the Azorean Archipelago. Thus, the pieces selected present the work of several national artists, with landscape and travel as the main thread that invite discourse. Exactly nine works were selected, as the different identities and particularities were taken into consideration. These different scales, singularities and accents, may represent contemporary Portuguese art, but also demonstrate the different ways of experiencing and thinking about Art. The exhibit's narrative unites the pieces under a set of contact points. Agenda june 2022 These commemorative medals in fired clay were designed in 1901, on the occasion of the 1st Royal Visit to the Azores, which aimed to reaffirm Portuguese sovereignty, at a time when this archipelago, due to its geographical location, was assuming special relevance in the relations between Portugal and England, given the growing naval power of Germany and the awakening interest of the United States in the Atlantic. They mark the Industries, Arts and Sciences Exhibition and Feira Franca, in Ponta Delgada, and were created by Fábrica de Cerâmica Leite, then called Fábrica Açoriana. This manufacturer, located in Lagoa, produced glazed crockery with a Northern Portuguese influence, using clay imported from England which, being finer, allowed the creation of more refined pieces, some of which even won awards in National and International Exhibitions. Royal Visit Commemorative Medals Saint Francis Building | Memórias May 3rd to June 5th Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1712. He created the "Good Savage" theory, according to which humanity is naturally good and that its corruption comes from Institutions. Due to his rejection of humanity’s inherent evil, and consequent blame put upon a corrupting society, his ideas were adopted by many revolutionaries, like Marx and Lenin. He is still considered an important figure in French culture, whose influence is still felt in a world ever more threatened by war, disease and climate change. Jules-Robert Auguste (1789-1850), a sculptor and painter from Paris, created this notable bronze piece, which is housed in Angra do Heroísmo Museum's Fine Arts Conservation Unit. Jean-Jacques Rosseau Saint Francis Building | Memórias June 7th to July 3rd A Curious Display Exhibits Agenda june 2022 Exhibits The third sequence is based on Professor Luís Filipe Thomas' collection. It brings a new culture to Angra do Heroísmo Museum. The coins showcase the different powers that have occupied Palestine. It starts in the Persian Empire, with coins from the Hellenistic Lagid dynasty, the Seleucids, coins minted locally by the Jewish Hasmonean dynasties (140-37 BCE) and the Herodians who, under the Roman protectorate, reigned from 47 BCE . until the death of Herod Agrippa II in 100 CE. It also includes coinage made in the name of the Roman emperors by the Procurators of Judea, Pontius Pilate, Pontius Festus, etc., and by various municipalities in the area osten- sibly anti-Roman Jewish coinages are also of note, as they were made during the revolts of 66-70 (which would lead to Jerusalem's occupation and the Temple destruction) and of 132-135 (revolt of Bar Kokhba). The other nucleus focuses on the Byzantine emperors. It starts with the division of the Roman Empire in two and leads to the death of Theodosius in 395 and the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453. The third nucleus includes coins from the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia (1198-1375) and the fourth example from the Ethiopian kingdom of Axum (c.270-631) - the only African territory to have its own currency before the Portuguese started minting coins for Angola during the Restoration. The exhibit is completed by a series of Muslim coinages from the Middle Ages, copied from Byzantine examples, and their Christian counterparts: coins from the Iberian Peninsula, Sicily, the Balkan Peninsula and even the Great Duchy of Moscow, all inspired by Muslim models. These curious hybrid types illustrate what could be the collection's leitmotif: "currency through cultures, history through coins". As Moedas Bíblicas e do Próximo Oriente Donated by professor Luís Filipe Thomas | 3rd Moment Do Mar e da Terra... uma história no Atlântico, May 20th to September 25th Although wooden barrels were used until the mid-19th century to store artillery gunpowder, generally of coarser grain. However, they presented several problems. The wood was porous and easily absorbed moisture, especially when carried on board, degrading the gunpowder. This was particularly noticeable in the fine gunpowder which was ignited by the gunner and produced a flash inside the cannon barrels. During the ocean travels, one of the solutions to store this fine gunpowder, on which the cannon's good ignition depended, was the use of small ceramic jars which were more effective than the small wooden barrels. They were reinforced with iron fittings and covers and were suspended by a hook so that they would not roll when the ship rocked or fall in wet spots. They could also be covered with sisal or braided leather to prevent them from clashing This specimen, in coarse feldspathic ceramics, close to stoneware, was fired at high-fire (+1200ºC). Through its pronounced shape and concave bottom one can recognize its Chinese provenance, as it was produced in the province of Guangdong. It is fitted with iron reinforcing frames, a lid and a suspension hook, with simple brass decorations, characteristic of the Kerala region on the South Malabar Coast of India. These gunpowder flasks have been found, often already without their iron reinforcements, in the remains of some shipwrecks of the Indian Career, their use being datable between the 16th and 18th centuries. Over the last few years, he built several dozens of model aircrafts, recreating each one with impressive detail. And collaborating with Airfix Model World , a renounced British magazine in the modelling field. He recently donated some of his model aircrafts to the museum. He selected to exhibit the Short Sunderland MK.III, a World War II distinguished model, especially against U-boats. Aviation and Battle in the Atlantic Scaling Down February 19th to june By Sea and Land... A history of the Atlantic Mostras Silver purses, like this one which belongs to Angra do Heroísmo Museum's Textile Conservation Unit, used in the time of Queen Victoria, combine utility with beauty and are part of a group related to functional jewellery. They were usually hung on the skirts' waistband through a hook placed on a strap, which freed the hands. They could contain something as simple as keys, money, cosmetics, scissors, writing utensils, perfumes, letters, etc. The first silver bags were made by goldsmiths in the first quarter of the 19th century and were entirely handmade. Only later, in 1908, was a metal mesh weaving machine patented, which made this object more accessible. Victorian Silver Purse The Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs / Silveira Paulo Palace May 16th to August 15th Born Marie-Jeanne Bécu (1743-1793), she became Countess du Barry by marriage. She was one of Louis XV's official mistresses. The illegitimate daughter of a seamstress and an unknown father, her studies were paid for by Monsieur Billiard-Dumonceaux, her mother's lover. A woman of great beauty, intelligence and refinement, she eventually became a luxury courtesan under Count Jean Baptiste du Barry, through which she established, aristocratic connections. After Madame de Pompadour's death, Luis XV's favourite, the Duke of Richelieu presented du Barry to the king. To facilitate her position as a royal mistress, her lover, Jean Baptiste du Barry married her to Madame du Barry Aerogare Civil das Lajes June 7th to September 2022 Exhibits Agenda june 2022 Count Guillaume du Barry, his brother. This marriage afforded her a title. Her power was secure until Louis XV's death, after which she was removed from court and sent to a convent, from which she escaped, returning to courtly life. After being accused of treason during the Great Terror, she was imprisoned by revolutionary troops and died by beheading in 1793. Her figure inspired several artists, of which Augustin Pajou (1730 1809), a French neoclassical sculptor, was the author of this bronze bust, which made him famous as an excellent portraitist of the female figure. It is housed by Angra do Heroísmo Museum's Fine Arts Conservation Unit. It is still possible to admire busts Madame du Barry created of herself in some of the world's most important museums. Lisandra, Beatriz, Virgínia, Verónica, Denise, Nélia, Isilda e Urselina, these are the names of eight azorean women, their age ranging from 21 to 80.. Some of them work full time in the fields, looking after the animals, to others this work is part of their free time when they help their families with this difficult daily labour. Labour is still a fundamental source of income for many families on Terceira Island. With the overall dominance of men in this field of work, these women are like a warm ray of sunshine in the cold of winter. They show strength, beyond any limitations or preconceptions. And as many of them say they are only helping their husbands, it is clear to see, as they work, that they are not merely helping, they are doing what needs to be done. This exhibit exists to showcase every woman who chooses to do the hard jobs and still remember to see the beauty in them every day. They number around 160 species. In this exhibition, you can find fifty original illustrations of groupers from around the world. Geographical distribution (vast or confined), behaviours, fishing importance and aesthetic, and, therefore, subjective, criteria were considered during the selection process of the specimens on display. Most groupers inhabit warm temperate and tropical waters, in depths up to 200 meters. Although, some species can be found at greater, as well as, shallower depths. O VOO DO AÇOR, now being displayed at the command building in Air Base #4, reimagines the 2020 exhibition through a more selective lens. Most of the original pieces are on show. The intent, now as before, is to teach about the history of aviation in the Azores, while also giving Terceira Island a special empha- sis. Therefore, the historical flight of October 4th, 1930 became the exhibit’s central focus. As it was the date when the first aero- plane, within the region's territory, took off from Achada airfield. AÇOR, as the aircraft was named, was a biplane Avro 504K mono-motor. Captain Frederico Coelho de Melo, who had been born in Altares, in Terceira Island, was chosen as the pilot due to his aviation pioneering efforts. It is developed through out four moments, from the discovery and settlement of the arqui- pelago to contemporaneousness life. It's aim is to explore the deep waters of culture and history in Azores and in Terceira island through the most meaningfull and valua- ble pieces in the institution. By Sea and Land... A History of the Atlantic 1º Moment 3º Moment 2º Moment 4º Moment The franciscan friars were the only ones who were allowed acess to the choir. They worshiped God and would call on God, through collective prayer, song and individual introspec- tion, for devine protection. Over the rows of chairs, early 18th century Azulejo tiles cover the walls with awe-inspering pane- ling narrating episodes from Saint Francis' life. These have been attributed to Teotónio dos Santos (1688-1762). By the choir one can see a pipe organ dated to 1788, the oldest existing example in Azores. It was created by António Xavier Machado Cerveira, one of the great portuguese organ build- er masters. Permanent Exibitions Agenda june 2022 This exhibition represents the participation of Portugal and the Azores in the Great War, through a thematic lens. Contex- tualization is obtained through the use of cartographic, photographic and filmic elements that allow the visitor to understand what Europe and the world were like before and after the end of the conflict. The participating countries are represented through helmets and other military objects such as weapons, antique gas masks, lanterns and communication systems, reminiscent of the trench environment. Portugal, Azores and the Great War The first room, by the reception area, showcases the history of this monastic space, and of the institutions it has housed over the centuries, starting with franciscan friars who here took residence. Saint Francis Building Memories The church of Our Lady of Guidance is an example of what George Kubler called plain style. A Portuguese architectural style differenciated by it's austere shapes. The seafarer Afonso Gonsalves Antona Baldaia, one of the first settlers, built a small chapel by his house, which he later donated to the franciscan friars, who used it as monastic church, once he left for Praia da Vitória. The current church was erected around the same place where the chapel was in the 15th century, with the same patron saint. In J.H. Van Linschoten's letter, in the 16th century, one can already witness the building's extention and remodel. It's current edification being created in 1666 and 1672. The temple contains one nave, which ends in the apse, and two aisles. One aisle on Gospel side and which ends at the sacristy, and another one on the epistle side, which leads to the The Third Order Regular of Saint Francis chapel.Previously, the chapel was used as part of a pay for pray service established by André Gomes in 1522. The Choir of Our Lady of Guidance's Church Our Lady of Guidance Church Permanent Exibitions Agenda june 2022 How Steel Changed the World: The Azorean Schneider-Canet Canon The museum's Schneider-Canet 75mm Field Gun is the only complete example in a museolog- ical institution. It includes harness- es (1917 model), the limbers, caisson and traveling forge. All fundamental in quick battlefield manuvers and machinery mainte- nance. Field guns, like the one in exibition, were aquired from Schneider Frères & Cie. factory, and were aquired by the state in 1904. They were also instrumental in the republican victory on Octo- ber fifth 1910, for the consulida- tion of the republican regime and all through out the first republic. They were also used in the Great War, as they accompanied the expeditionary force to angola in 1915 They were distributed to the islands of São Miguel, Terceira and Faial, during the Second World War, as reinforcement to the armed forces stationed in Azores. The museum's Exhibition of Carved Stones showcases a diverse range of items that illustrate how life once was in the island, some dating back to the first settlements. It includes tombstones and coats of arms, a great variety of architetural elements (both from religious to civil buildings) and tools for domestic use. You can come visit one of the oldest head- stones in Azores, from the 15th century, or protestant tomb- stone slabs from the early 19th century. There are also never used municipal coats of arms awaiting visitors. In the refectory, where the walls are decorated with azulejo tiles dated to the 17th century, visitors can find a varied collection of vehicles from the 18th through the 20th century. In this exhibition is included a Ford Model T, the first mass produced car, that revolutionized the automotive industry. Vehicle Reserve Collection XVIII to XX century Exhibition of Carved Stones Stones of Humankind Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima Military History Branch Agenda june 2022 Housed in the Boa Nova Military Hospital, the Manuel Coelho Baptis- ta de Lima Military History Branch safeguards the Museum of Angra do Heroismo's notable Military Memerobilia and Armament Collec- tion, including representations of all three branches of ,both national and international, military. It is, also, the only Portuguese Museum that is not part of the Ministry of National Defense network. Due to the collections diversety and volume of examples, it was seperated and housed in various centers and reserves. In order to demonstrate the evolution and usage of weaponry, and to also incite reflextion on the moral, ethical and social questions inherent to warfare, the collection is devided into three permanent exibhitions. It also documents the life experiences of its patron, Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima, as well as the history of the building itself. The collection is composed by foot and field artillery, fire arms, bladed weapons, projectiles, logistical equipment, harnesses, uniforms and medals. The reserves reflects Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima's interest in the military. For three decades he collected the items, and, as the museum's first director, ensured it's enrichment. The Boa Nova Military Hospital, situated by the Philipine fortress, commonly known as Castelo de São João Baptis- ta (Castel of Saint John the Baptist), was built in the 17th century under the sole porpuse of creating a military hospital. "Arrow to Drone" is a permanent exhibition, which intends to demonstrate the evolution of weapons within historical context. It is organized in five diachronic themes. This allows the visitor to feel as if they are witnessing the evolution as it happened in time and space, traveling to the battle fields and experiencing it within context. the exhibiton includes both meele and fire weap- ons, philately, graphical and fine art documents, uniforms and body armour, musical instruments, artillery and maintenance supplies, vehicles and logistic information. Arrow to Drone Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima Military History Branch Agenda june 2022 The exhibition Memory and Inovation: Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima and Azorean Heritage intends to record the influence of this Angra native intelectual. This is highlighted through his atempts to create a identitarian narative and a shared azorean history, oposing the ethono- graphic regionalism present on the first half of the 20th century. It also emphasises his contribution towards the implentation of new european heritage management and protection models in the region, which incite action at the public and reagional level. In this exhibition the visitor can learn about the hospital's history as one of the oldest, if not the oldest, military hospitals in the world. Since, before it's inception, both civilians and armed forces would rely on the same existing medical facilities. The hospital was edified after Dom Álvaro de Bazán, who arrived in Terceira island upon the Spanish conquests in 1583, brought his field hospital. The hospital was developed along side the Our Lady of Good News chapel. And was extended, with a new and sizable infermary, during Dom José's reign. The visitor can learn how illness and health existed withing the religious and how connected treatment methods were with tradi- tional home remedies. In the old sacresty and chapel the events surrounding the spanish surrender, in 1642, after the local population, with help from other azorean islands, held an 11 month siege. Itis also possible to find other interesting pieces of history, such as, António Viera's sermon in 1654, Manuel Luís Maldonado's burrial site, chronical writer for "Fenix Angrence" and Administrator of the hospital, and the printing press that launched print media in Azores. Memory and Inovation: Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima and Azorean Heritage The Royal Hospital of Boa Nova Carmina | Dimas Simas Lopes Modern Art Galery Agenda june 2022 Carmina | Dimas Simas Lopes Modern Art Galery has become a part of Museum of Angra do Heroísmo, on October 9th 2020, after it was donated to the Autono- mous Region of the Azores by its founder, whose name it bears, a prestigious visual artist focused on sculpture and painting. Founded on July 17th 2004, Carmina Galeria has been, for eight years, a center for the difusion of Contemporary Art in Terceira island. Taking on the mantel of an arts laboratory and a space that congregates differ- ent cultural expressions. In the new cycle that now begins it will, hopefully, continue to assert itself as a reference centre for the disclosure, reflection and fruition of the different artistic areas.
