SM : How does the viewer experience your work? CD : The viewer experiences my work in any way that they want to. But it is something that I am offering to them, they can in some ways borrow from this experience. They can take what they like, but I can give them some sort of direction. They can experience something by seeing it again or in a slightly different way or repetition, or it can be a video with sound to bring in elements of the water that show the power. They can experience just by different visual elements that come together e.g. shapes, line. They can feel that the water is something that is greater than them. www.charlottedobson.com @charlottedobson.photography Interviewed by Silje Malene Charlotte Dobson SM : How often do you spend in water yourself? CD : I go swimming every week and I want to be in water more, especially whilst it is summer. SM : How is light important/how do you play with light? CD : Light is important to see things, to search for things, it can be soft/harsh, it can have pattern/ shape in itself. It can impact the experience that someone has in the gallery too. Light SM : What materials in particular do you select? Is there a criteria you look for? CD : I select materials that interact with light and play with light – so it can reflect light or bounce light or make light go into a different place or spread out. I also look at materials that are delicate and I’m currently exploring tin foil. Materials SM : What impact does the sound of water have in your work? CD : Sound adds another layer to the work. I show quiet water or loud water or I can juxtapose sound so it’s a different visual that you wouldn’t expect. Sound can also be broken or dissolved. Sound SM : How do you manage printing costs? CD : It’s something that I view not to limit me since wanting the scale of the images to be quite large. I could maybe sell smaller prints so that I can fundraise from those and they become small little offerings. I am also looking to collaborate with others to make costs cheaper. Prints
