Mount Nebo 8 Beheading of St. John the Baptist Church The Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist was built upon the summit of the historic Madaba (Acropolis) hill in 1913, directly atop the ruins of an older church built in 1883. It stands today as the oldest church where religious rites have been performed without interruption. In 1967, the Vatican declared this Church as a sacred place and urged pilgrims to visit it. On August 26th,2011, His Beatitude Patriarch Fouad Twal consecrated a shrine devoted to the beheading of Saint John the Baptist. Visitors to the church can see an exhibition of photos depicting Madaba during this period spanning from 1911-1902 AD. Those who enter the church will see the story of John the Baptist through a series of large and beautiful paintings brought from Italy in 1904. Visitors may also see an old water well that dates back to the Moabite period, which was dug into the church’s basement. Mount Nebo Mount Nebo is located ten kilometers to the west of Madaba, and contains breathtaking views of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, the West Bank and Jerusalem. The mountain is considered one of Jordan’s sacred sites, as biblical texts note that Moses, peace be upon him, viewed the land of Canaan - which he did not set foot on subsequently - from the highest mountain. It is believed that this mountain may have been “Nebo” (Deuteronomy 32). The church includes a large mosaic ÁRRU SLHFH LQ WKH VKDSH RI D FLUFXODU PHGDOOLRQ Drawn in its center is the Greek goddess of the sea, “Thalassa”, swimming with a group of dolphins. An inscription accompanying the signature of the mosaic’s creator – Salmanos (i.e. Solomon) – suggests that the mosaic dates back to 578 AD. As for the church itself, it is believed that it was built during this period to honor the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, or the Apostles. The city is also mentioned in the Old Testament by the name of Medeba (Numbers 21:30; Joshua 13:9).
