Starting off with the story titled “My Literary Shipyard”, the reader quickly discovers the article is solely based on the magnificent and legendary writer Mark Twain. He’s known for his novels “Huckleberry Finn” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, which were two novels I read growing up. One of the first books I read was Huckleberry finn, so this article did in fact intrigue me. Hemingway announced that “All american writing came from Huckleberry Finn, and that there hasn’t been anything good since. I could agree and disagree with this statement, because the novel was spectacular, but not my preferred genre. Mark Twain mentions during the process of writing and storming up ideas for his novels, he’d find himself writing a 400 page manuscript, but not having the ability to finish it, and complete the story. Twain evaluated that his motivation, ambition and creativity would burn out after being severely distressed and worked out, but he coped with it by leaving it alone, focusing on either things, then the tank would slowly fill up on it’s own. On multiple occasions, Twain would set aside stories for years, until he’d come back to finish it years later. Many of his famous pieces involve year gaps in works, the book “The Prince and the Pauper”, took years to finish, but the most interesting part was that Twain described it as the book “writing itself” when finally completing a novel. When writing books, Twain would experience the story to get tired towards the middle, following up when he decided to take a break from it. He’d set the books aside and wait years to finish them, or should I say to “finish themselves”. Towards the ending, Twain illumizes that he was born lazy, and has several books only half finished, noting that he won’t finish the stories ever. He divulges into the ideas that the pen brings him pain and bore, which is something a lazy person despises and resents. The last page explains the incident when thousands of dollars of manuscripts were destroyed by Twain and his wife. Twain would start books 30 years ago, and the book being turned upon marvels of mental telegraphy. Twain has started 400 paged novels, nut resorts to burning them in a fire when realizing they won’t ever be finished, and that's just part of the literary shipyard. This short story will stay with me, while also realizing everyone has their own literary shipyard.
