As the Chief Software Architect for Budget Rent a Car in Dubai, Ammar was entrusted with a pivotal task: to build a website and an online car rental booking system. "I didn't choose the industry, but the industry chose me," he reflects, realizing that this was his niche. After more than a decade of invaluable experience in the car rental sector, Ammar remained unconvinced that the traditional model provided a seamless experience for the end customer. "In over 11–12 years of this experience, there was a storm brewing inside me," he explains. The endeavor began with a modest capital of AED 32,000 and absolutely no external funding. "I started it with AED 32,000, and after licensing and other costs, the net operating capital I had in my hands at the time of launching Finalrentals was AED 15,000, to be exact," he recalls. Coming from a background as a software architect leading engineering and design teams, Ammar had limited knowledge of startups and funding. Finalrentals was built to be a lean organization, with 100% of its revenues generated in real-time. Below are the highlights of the interview: Could you please brief us about your company and its inception story? Finalrentals is different from others in the industry by merging technology with the traditional car rental business. We work with local car rental businesses struggling to compete with larger companies and adapt to the digital era. After sitting on the idea for several years, Finalrentals was cemented as a business in 2019, and we have gone from strength to strength since. Could you share a defining moment or experience from your early career that shaped your leadership style and decision-making approach? Early on in Finalrentals, I committed 62% of my salary for two years, dedicating myself to aiding and securing the business' financial help. This was a huge risk on my part and easily could have backfired. However, this defining moment was the beginning of a series of triumphs, leading to six-figure funding from prominent investors and fast- forwarding our growth trajectory. Though risks are always scary in business, I now know they are part of the adventure. While the decisions don't necessarily get easier, especially with more on the line, these early risks have taught me what needs to be done to succeed. How do you prioritize tasks and manage your time effectively as a CEO, and how do you foster a positive company culture and motivate your team? I do not see tasks as a one-time job but as a process that takes us to our end goal. I make sure we are hitting all the deadlines and all the procedures are in place. As a company, we are very flexible; we do not have the concept of work hours or pay cuts; we work on a very lean team model where we all work together to achieve one goal, and that is innovation. We work together in a way that we are all in this together. Can you provide an example of a challenging situation you faced as a CEO and how you resolved it, and how you stay updated with industry trends and advancements? In the infancy of Finalrentals, I invested my life savings into the business and faced a $350,000 loss in the first year. Many people would have been deterred by this, especially with the difficulties of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of giving up, we preserved ourselves as a business and adapted. What is your approach to managing risk and ensuring compliance within the organization, how do you handle setbacks or failures, and what lessons have you learned from them? I always see failures as a blessing, because if we are not making mistakes, that means we are not growing or we are not growing fast enough. In the world of blitzscaling, it is very important to move fast, make mistakes, learn fast, and move on, and that is how we deal with failures at Finalrentals. Success and failure often go hand in hand in the business world. How do you approach and learn from failures, and how has failure contributed to your growth as a leader? That first loss of $350,00 was incredibly hard, but it taught me perseverance and determination as an entrepreneur and as a leader. Giving up was not an option, and resilience can get you a long way. It is because of these attributes, as well as knowing I was doing something innovative and full of purpose, that Finalrentals has driven them to the successes they have achieved so far. As a leader, my goal is to instill that same purpose in my team. Our graduate scheme allows our team members to nurture and hone their skills before taking on the full responsibility of their positions. What are your strategies for attracting and retaining top talent, and how do you approach strategic partnerships and collaborations to drive business growth? We have started a graduate program within Finalrentals, targeting the abundant young talent in Wales and beyond. The 90-day apprenticeship hones the skills of the individual, setting them up for a successful career within the company. So far, the graduate program has brought in 10 successful colleagues, with plans to widen the program in the future. Celebrating new talent is one of our main goals as a company, and winning Fintech Wales Best Apprentice of the Year 2023 is a testament to this. What advice would you give to aspiring young entrepreneurs who aspire to become successful CEOs and leaders? Do not be afraid of being a small company, as that puts you in a powerful position.
