Spatial Aptitudes Examination (SAE) 1 Norming Form A Date of Release : August 1, 2024 Introduction The Spatial Aptitudes Examination Norming Form A is designed to evaluate visual - spatial abilities through two key sections: a Verbal Section and a Non - Verbal Section. The Verbal Section assesses spatial reasoning using language - based tasks, while the Non - Verbal Section measures spatial skills through tasks that do not involve language. Modeled after the Stanford - Binet Intelligence Scales, Fifth Edition (SB5), this test has shown promising correlations with the Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) in preliminary studies. Raw scores from both sections will be used to calculate a composite score and contribute to the ongoing norming process, reflecting data from the r/CognitiveTe sting community. All materials are protected by copyright. Unauthorized copying or distribution is prohibited. Preliminary norms are available at the end of the test. The preliminary composite goes from 50 to 165. Verbal Section : ○ The test begins with the Verbal Section. Take your time to carefully read each question, even though they are designed to be as clear and straightforward as possible. ○ You have 25 minutes to complete this section. ○ There is no penalty for incorrect answers. ○ The maximum total raw score for this section is 36, as it consists of 36 questions. ○ You have to complete every question mentally. Pen and paper are forbidden on this section. 2. Non - Verbal Section : ○ After completing t he Verbal Section, proceed to the Non - Verbal Section. ○ You have 25 minutes to complete this section. ○ The maximum total raw score for this section is also 36, with 8 puzzles to solve. ○ Pen and paper are allowed. Reminder Cardinal Directions : ● Remember the card inal directions: North, East, South, and West. You also have North - East, North - West, South - East and South - West. ● A turn is equal to 90 degrees. ● Half a turn is 45 degrees. ● Twice a turn is 180 degrees. Please ensure that you manage your time effectively and f ocus on providing the best responses for each section. The verbal section begins on the next page.. Spatial Aptitudes Examination (SAE) 4 You now have 25 minutes. Good luck. VERBAL SECTION START The cardinal directions are fixed. Pen and paper are forbidden. Orientation : Example : You are facing East and you turn on your right. Which direction are you facing now? Answer : South You are facing East and you turn on your left. Which direction are you facing now? You are facing North and you turn twice on your right. Which direction are you facing now? You are facing South and you turn on your right. Which direction are you facing now? You are facing East and you do half a turn on your left. Which direction a re you facing now? You are facing North and you do half a turn on your left. Which direction are you facing now? You are facing East and you do half a turn on your left, then do half a turn on your right. Which direction are you facing now? You are facing West and you turn on your left, then do half a turn on your left. Which direction are you facing now? Spatial Aptitudes Examination (SAE) 5 You are facing North - East and you turn twice on your right, then do half a turn on your left. Which direction are you facing now? Peter is to the East of Tom, Tom is to the North of John and Mike is to the South of John. Where is Mike situated relative to Peter? Mike is to the ... of Peter. You are facing North - West and you turn on your left, then do one and a half turn on your righ t. Which direction are you facing now? You are facing Peter, with Tom to your left, Mike to your right, and John behind you. You turn on your right twice, then you turn three times on your left, and then twice again on your right. Who are you facing now? You are facing South and you turn on your right twice and a half times, then do one turn on your right, and then turn twice on your left. Which direction are you facing now? You are facing South - East and you walk one yard forward, then you do one and a half turn to your right, walk two yards forward, then you turn to your right. In which direction is your starting point from your current position? Now we’ll introduce two n ew cardinal directions : Top and Bottom. Top is when you look above, Bottom is when you look below. Beware, you can have composite cardinal directions. For instance, Top - North - East. Here you are looking at the Top and in the direction of the North - East quadrant. They are three - dimensional cardinal directions. Spatial Aptitudes Examination (SAE) 6 Imagine you are looking at the Evening Star that is always situated North and that your head for ms a 45 - degree angle with the floor; in this case, you are looking at Top - North. In the following questions, you are asked to consider the shortest rotation (angle) to get from one cardinal direction to the other. Example : You are facing Top - North and y ou rotate to Bottom - North. What is the smallest angle in degrees that you have turned? Answer : 90 (degrees) You are facing North and you rotate to South. What is the smallest angle in degrees that you have turned? You are facing Top - East and you rotat e to Bottom - East. What is the smallest angle in degrees that you have turned? You are facing Top - North and you rotate to South. What is the smallest angle in degrees that you have turned? You are facing Top - North - East and you rotate to Bottom - South - East. What is the smallest angle in degrees that you have turned? Problem - solving : How many faces does a cube have? How many completely flat surfaces does a cylinder have? How many faces does a square - based pyramid have including its base? Spatial Aptitudes Examination (SAE) 7 If you perfectly stick two squares together along one side, what new shape will they form? If you stack identical vases one on top of another, will the width of the entire stack increase, decrease, or stay the same? If you perfectly stick two equilateral triangles along one side, how many exterior sides can you obtain? Given a cube whose sides are of full length, how many cubes whose sides are of half length can you put in it? Given two circles, how many distinct sections can you obtain at maximum by overlapping them? Given a square piece of paper, if you fold it along one diagonal and then fold it along the other diagonal, what shape will be formed when you unfold the paper, and how many? Given a triangle, what is the maximum number of distinct sections you can crea te by cutting it two times with straight lines (rotation included)? Given two triangles, how many distinct sections can you obtain at maximum if you overlap them in the most complex way (rotations included)? Given four lines, how many intersections can you obtain at maximum between the lines? Spatial Aptitudes Examination (SAE) 8 Given a square, if you divide it into four equal smaller squares, how many four - sided shapes are there in the larger square, including the original? Given a rectangle piece of paper, if you completely fold each four sides in two on top of each other, what shape will be formed when you unfold the paper, and how many? Jean is facing North - West and Susan, his sister, is facing East. Both start walking in a straight line from the same position and cover the same distance. Where on Earth could they potentially meet? A cube is painted on all six faces and then cut into 64 smaller cubes (4x4x4). When reassembled, what is the number of smaller cubes that have exactly two of their original faces painted? Given four lines in a plane, what is the maximum number of distinct regions they can divide the plane into? Given a two - dimensional donut, what is the maximum number of distinct sections you can create by cutting it three times with straight lines (rotations included)? Given a cube, what is the maximum number of distinct sections you can create by making four straight cuts through it (rotations included)? VERBAL SECTION COMPLETED You can now, if you’d like, take a 10 minutes break. Turn the page when your break is done. Spatial Aptitudes Examination (SAE) 9 There are specific instructions for the Non - Verbal Section: You will be shown an example puzzle. On the right, the puzzle is completed. On the left, there are the different pieces used to complete the puzzle. The g oal is simple: You have to dissect the puzzle, count the number of each different piece that would come together to make the puzzle and input the numbers. Here there are 2 squares and 2 rectangles: So I input ; 2 2 Important : Some answers are already filled in and you can’t change them. They are in red . Using a drawing app is recommended to dissect the puzzle. The non verbal sections begins on the next page. Spatial Aptitudes Examination (SAE) 10 You now have 25 minutes. Good luck. NON VERBAL SECTION START Pen and paper are allowed. Using a drawing app to dissect the puzzle is recommended. The pieces can’t overlap !
