It was held on the 04 th February 2019 around Galle. As it was the Independence Day we wanted to celebrate and serve freely. Leo Pasindu Alwis who was the Project Chairman, planned this very well to have a great ex- perience. We explored the Kanneliya Forest Reserve and Galle. In exploring Kanneliya Forest reserve we got into the Falls which was a valuable experience and had a lecture about the Forest Reserve as well. Exploring Galle also quite interesting as we spent time at the beach, had lunch, enjoyed the breeze, played a match of tap rugby, a good swim at the sea. We all had a first time experience in surfing the waters as well. We all joined hands together to clean the coastal area near the lodging place. We were proud of how the neighbors around almost kept the surrounding clean. With that, we got time to speak with people around and foreigners as well. Hence, it was in- deed a memorable day for all Leos. a Ally 05 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 04 urodk 2 F RT It can be simply explained as a security system for threaded fasteners. (Nuts and Bolts) Why such security system is required? We all know that threaded fasteners are use to assemble parts in every field all over the world since the industrial revolution. But failure (loosening or breaking) of bolts lead to damages of valua- ble property endangering many lives in every year. As you can remember, on 19.03.2012 Sri Lanka lost a valuable life of a youth due to failure of a bolt of a train foot board at Veyangoda sta- tion. Searching the Internet, we can have a summary of bolt fail- ure accidents all over the world. So, inventing a security system to avoid this preventable nut and bolt failure is a must. Does your invention “i - cap” helps to stop bolt failures? No. “i - cap” helps to detect possible bolt failures which are happening silently. At a glance we cannot identify a loosened bolt. But if you apply an “i - cap” to a bolt, it will warn you by showing a red color even at the initial stage of loosening of that bolt. Additionally, it will start a warning alert electronically. So, the user can take appropriate actions to prevent this possible bolt failure. Is “i - cap” expensive? It is inexpensive and can be easily applied to new or even for existing bolts. Ally 13 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 04 What is the application process? This product is available as a cap. After tightening the bolt user must push the “i - cap” around the bolt and paste it. To apply the electronic alert sys- tem, two terminals of the “i - cap” should be con- nected to the circuit. Who are the beneficiaries? ? Every field all over the world will have benefits. From simple machine to air crafts, ships, huge cranes have visible or invisible fasteners which play a vital role in holding their parts together. Although they carry numerous lives and properties, checking every single bolt before a jour- ney is impossible. “i - cap” is the emerging solution for this problem. It will warn failing fasten- ers at initial stage so, users can take appropriate actions to save the whole lot of trouble which will come later. What are your future implements? My aim is to develop this product using Android and IoT. So, in near future you will receive alerts to smart phone about your valuable machines and vehicles located far away from you. Further, this can be used for important valves, lids and caps. How it works? “i – cap” has a special mechanism to change its own color according to the condition of the bolt. In a well tightened bolt “i – cap” only shows green color indicating that it is not loosened and it is in its original position. When the bolt is getting loose, green color will gradually decrease and red color will appear. Whole area becomes red after complete loosening of 1 st round. Luminous colors are used in “i – cap”. So even in night, a flashlight will clearly show loosened or broken, nut and bolts. With the help of the electronic monitoring system, we can monitor bolts even from a distance Cont.. Black holes are extraordinary cosmic objects with enormous masses, but extremely compact sizes. Therefore, the gravity of a black hole is higher than nowhere else, so that it is a region of space from which nothing, not even light can escape. Despite the name, they are not empty but instead consist of a huge amount of matter packed densely into a small area, giving it an immense gravitational pull. According to the theories presented regarding black holes, there is a region of space beyond the back hole called the “ event horizon ” which is a “point of no return”, beyond which it is impossible to escape the gravitational effects of the black hole. A s you all know, recently the cyber space was con- quered by this first ever image of a black hole. This im- age was the front page news all over the world and even laypersons in the fields of astronomy and physics started probing about black holes, dark matter and ex- traterrestrial space. The questions which aroused curi- osity in many of us were “what is a black hole?” , “why isn’t the black hole black?” , “how can some- one photograph a black hole?” and “what happens if a black hole comes to us?” . Let’s find out. Why isn’t the black hole black? The image shows a bright ring of light around a dark region similar to a shad- ow. This shadow is caused by gravita- tional bending and capture of light (originated by various gases) by the event horizon. Simply, the “ bright ring of fire ” around a black hole is formed as light bends in the intense gravity of a black hole which is approximately 6.5 billion times more massive than our sun, around which the whole solar system orbits. As described by scientists, the bright ring around the black hole which seems to be yellow-orange-red in col- or is caused by superheated gas falling into the hole. This light is said to be brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy combined; which is why it can be seen even from earth at a distance of 500,000,000 trillion kilo- meters The recently photographed black hole is larger than the size of our entire solar system and it measures 40 billion kilometers across; three million times the size of the earth. This led the astronomers and physicists call this black hole in galaxy M87 as “a monster”. Ally 17 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 04 BLACK HOLE THE “NOT Black” Cont... How to capture an image of a black hole? As I’ve said earlier, the black hole in galaxy M87 was photographed recently, using a ra- dio telescope system called the Event Hori- zon Telescope (EHT). The EHT is not a single telescope at all, but a network of radio tele- scopes all over the world making precisely timed recordings of radio waves all together, and these recordings can be combined such that the different telescopes act as one. This high-tech worldwide network of radio tele- scopes consists of 8 telescopes deployed at high altitudes in far-distant locations such as volcanoes in Hawaii and Mexico, moun- tains in Arizona and Spanish Sierra Nevada and glazier mountains in Antarctica. When Einstein’s theories about black holes came into debate in the 20 th century, no one thought it was possible to capture an image of a black hole. But in 1993, Prof. Heino Falcke, of Radboud University in the Nether- lands, realized that a certain type of radio emission would be generated close to and all around a black hole, which would be power- ful enough to be detected by telescopes on earth. He himself was the founder of the pro- ject “ The Event Horizon Telescope Array ” and eventually succeeded in capturing the very first image of a black hole. Now the EHT is imaging a supermassive black hole at the center of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Odd though it may sound, that is being harder than getting an image from a distant galaxy 55 million light years away. This is because for some unknown reason, the “ring of fire” around this black hole is smaller and dimmer. What if a black hole comes closer? Most of the physicists believe that the “ end of the world ” will occur due to the effect of a black hole coming closer to the earth. Though there have been no evidences of such a black hole which can devastate our solar system, scientists estimate that there are as many as ten million to a billion black holes in our galaxy; the Milky Way alone. One of the best-known effects of a nearby black hole has the imaginative title of “ Spaghettification ”. In brief, if you stay too close to a black hole, then you will stretch out, just like spaghetti. This effect is caused due to a gravitation gradient across your body. Imagine that you are headed feet first towards a black hole. Since your feet are physically closer to the black hole, they will feel a stronger gravita- tion pull towards it than your head will. Worse than that, your arms, by virtue of the fact that they’re not at the center of your body, will be attracted in a slightly different (vector) direction than your head is. This will cause parts of the body toward the edges to be brought inwards. This imaginative theory figures out how matter is deformed due to the gravitational effect of a black hole. But the scientists know that nothing will remain to be “spaghettified” due to the super -high radia- tion near a black hole which makes its “ring of fire” glow brighter than billions of stars combined.
