Courts of Atlanta, a retired investment banker, died Thursday at his home. He was 96. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Patterson's Spring Hill funeral home, with burial at Westview Cemetery. His Atlanta investment banking firm, Courts & Co., merged with Dean Witter Reynolds in 1969, and he retired. Mr. Courts was a consultant to and provided corporate financing through Courts & Co. to the Sea Island Co., Atlantic Steel, Delta Air Lines, Genuine Parts Co., Flowers Industries, Cousins Properties, Oxford Industries, Cagle's Inc. and other firms. He gained a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1929. Richard Winn Courts was born June 23, 1896, in Clarksville, Tenn., and later moved to Atlanta with his family. He graduated from Boys High School here; graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia in 1918; and served in the Army in World War I. Mr. Courts worked for Atlanta banks before forming Courts & Co. in 1925. He was chairman of a 1943 Atlanta drive to raise funds to fight polio, and a 1945 Atlanta Community Fund drive. He was a former treasurer of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and a former trustee of the J. Bulow Campbell Foundation, Courts Foundation, University of Georgia Foundation and Price Gilbert Jr. Charitable Fund. Mr. Courts was also a former member of the boards of directors of the Atlantic Co., Delta Air Lines, Economy Auto Stores, Flowers Industries, IBM World Trade Corp., Sea Island Co., Southern Mills and Southeastern Greyhound Lines. He also belonged to Rotary, Beta Gamma Sigma, Chi Phi, Phi Beta Kappa, the Piedmont Driving Club, Capital City Club, Peachtree Golf Club and the Nine O'Clocks social club.
