Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a particular phenotype of non-ischemic systolic heart failure, frequently recognizing a genetic background and affecting relatively young patients with few comorbidities. Nowadays, long-term survival of DCM patients has been markedly improved due to an early diagnosis and uninterrupted and tailored follow-up under constant optimal medical and non-pharmacological evidence-based treatments. Nevertheless, DCM is still one of the most common causes of heart transplantation in the western world. Clinical management requires an integrated and systematic use of diagnostic tools and a deeper investigation of the basic mechanisms underlying the disease. However, several emerging issues remain debated. Specifically, the genotype–phenotype correlation, the role of advanced imaging techniques and genetic testing, the lack of appropriate risk stratification models, the need for a multiparametric and multidisciplinary approach for device implantation, and a continuous reclassification of the disease during follow-up remain challenging issues in clinical practice. Therefore, the aim of this Special Issue is to shed the light on the most recent advancements in characterization and clinical management of DCM in order to unveil the conundrum of this particular disease.

Iron–sulfur (FeS) centers are essential protein cofactors in all forms of life. They are involved in many key biological processes. In particular, Fe-S centers not only serve as enzyme cofactors in catalysis and electron transfer, they are also indispensable for the biosynthesis of complex metal-containing cofactors. Among these cofactors are the molybdenum (Moco) and tungsten (Wco) cofactors. Both Moco/Wco biosynthesis and Fe-S cluster assembly are highly conserved among all kingdoms of life. After formation, Fe-S clusters are transferred to carrier proteins, which insert them into recipient apo-proteins. Moco/Wco cofactors are composed of a tricyclic pterin compound, with the metal coordinated to its unique dithiolene group. Moco/Wco biosynthesis starts with an Fe-S cluster-dependent step involving radical/S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) chemistry. The current lack of knowledge of the connection of the assembly/biosynthesis of complex metal-containing cofactors is due to the sheer complexity of their synthesis with regard to both the (genetic) regulation and (chemical) metal center assembly. Studies on these metal-cofactors/cofactor-containing enzymes are important for understanding fundamental cellular processes. They will also provide a comprehensive view of the complex biosynthesis and the catalytic mechanism of metalloenzymes that underlie metal-related human diseases.

Mai 2004 und die geplante Aufnahme von zwei weiteren Ländern im Jahr 2007 stellt eine große Herausforderung für Europa dar. Die Besonderheit der EU-Osterweiterung liegt insbesondere im niedrigen Einkommensniveau der beitretenden Volkswirtschaften. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit steht aus diesem Grund unter Zugrundelegung der Ergebnisse der neoklassischen Wachstumstheorie sowie der Theorie endogenen Wachstums die Frage nach Wahrscheinlichkeit, Ausmaß und Geschwindigkeit eines positiven Konvergenzprozesses im Rahmen der Europäischen Integration. Neben dem Konvergenzpotenzial, welches sich in Folge der Integration der MOEL in den Europäischen Wirtschaftsraum ergibt, stehen vor allem die jeweiligen Voraussetzungen in den EU-Beitrittsländern im Vordergrund, die in Anlehnung an das Konzept der «Social Capability» von Moses Abramovitz untersucht werden.
