The Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics (LIP) is a leading research center for the development of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) and a world-class laboratory for the application of Ion Beam Physics in a wide range of fields. It can rely on a broad funding base and can thus serve a large user community frommany highly current disciplines. LIP acts as a national competence center for ion beam applications. This annual report is a brief summary of the accomplishedachievements. It covers the wide range of fields from fundamental research, over operational issues of the laboratory, to the vast variety of excitingapplications of our measurement technologies. Naturally, the publications listed in the appendix of this report will provide a much deeper insight into our research.
The Data Science and AI course covers data analysis, machine learning, deep learning, and AI applications. Key topics include Python programming, statistical modeling, data visualization, neural networks, and natural language processing. Students engage in hands-on projects, building predictive models and AI solutions, preparing them for careers in data science, AI development, and advanced analytics.
This Special Issue focused on novel vision-based approaches, mainly related to computer vision and machine learning, for the automatic analysis of human behaviour. We solicited submissions on the following topics: information theory-based pattern classification, biometric recognition, multimodal human analysis, low resolution human activity analysis, face analysis, abnormal behaviour analysis, unsupervised human analysis scenarios, 3D/4D human pose and shape estimation, human analysis in virtual/augmented reality, affective computing, social signal processing, personality computing, activity recognition, human tracking in the wild, and application of information-theoretic concepts for human behaviour analysis. In the end, 15 papers were accepted for this special issue. These papers, that are reviewed in this editorial, analyse human behaviour from the aforementioned perspectives, defining in most of the cases the state of the art in their corresponding field.
In this Research Topic, several groups of researchers from both social and biological psychology summarize their findings addressing the relation between emotion and behavior. The Reflective-Impulsive Model (RIM) (Strack & Deutsch, 2004; 2014 in press) serves as a general orientation and provides a link to integrate the results from seemingly divergent perspectives. The contributions focuses on different types of emotional behaviors, like facial expressions and impulsive reactions. They address the central issue of approach vs. avoidance and include clinical topics like addiction and fear. Methodologically, the contributions are predominantly experimental and are partly based on manipulations in the context of virtual reality.
"Challenges and Solutions in Ethnographic Research: Ethnography with a Twist seeks to rethink ethnography ‘outside the box’ of its previous tradition and to develop ethnographic methods by critically discussing the process, ethics, impact and knowledge production in ethnographic research. This interdisciplinary edited volume argues for a ‘twist’ that supports openness, courage, and creativity to develop and test innovative and unconventional ways of thinking and doing ethnography. ‘Ethnography with a twist’ means both an intentional aim to conduct ethnographic research with novel approaches and methods but also sensitivity to recognize and creativity to utilize different kinds of ‘twist moments’ that ethnographic research may create for the researcher. This edited volume critically evaluates new and old methodological tools and their ability to engage with questions of power difference. It proposes new collaborative methods that allow for co-production and co-creation of research material as well as shared conceptual work and wider distribution of knowledge. The book will be of use to ethnographers in humanities and social science disciplines including sociology, anthropology and communication studies."
The Well at the World's End is a fantasy novel by the British artist, poet, and author William Morris. It was first published in 1896 and has been reprinted a number of times since, most notably in two parts as the 20th and 21st volumes of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, in August and September 1970. It is also available in one volume along with a similar Morris tale, The Wood Beyond the World (1894), in On the Lines of Morris' Romances: Two Books that Inspired J. R. R. Tolkien. Academic study of social activism and social movements has become increasingly prevalent over the years; this is due in large part to the fact that activists have captured public imagination and gained substantial influence in political discourse. For instance, Occupy Wall Street activists, Tea Party activists, and activists affiliated with the Arab Spring have transformed political debates and have become the focus of mainstream news media coverage about a variety of different political topics.'Journey into Social Activism' explicates the philosophical foundations of the study of activism and illustrates four different research sites in which activism can be observed and studied: organizations, networks, events, and alternative media. The book will introduce students and scholars to important qualitative approaches to the study of social activism within these four research sites.
How is "gender" received by students of educational research, pedagogy and related fields? What are the students' views on gender issues? Based on the observation that interest in gender issues is perceived more as an individual and somewhat anachronistic phenomenon, the empirical study reconstructs the influence of the educational institution university and the study of the specific subject area on students.
