In the early nineteenth century, Edinburgh was the leading centreof medical education and research in Britain. It also laid claim toa thriving periodical culture, which served as a significant mediumfor the dissemination and exchange of medical and literary ideasthroughout Britain, the colonies, and beyond. Literature and Medicinein the Nineteenth-Century Periodical Press explores the relationshipbetween the medical culture of Romantic-era Scotland andthe periodical press by examining several medically-trained contributorsto Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, the most influential andinnovative literary periodical of the era.
