The main island is surrounded by about 70 smaller islands, the largest of which are Panglao Island, facing Tagbilaran, in the southwest and Lapinig Island in the northeast. 4 History PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD ✘ The people of Bohol are said to be the descendants of a group of inhabitants who settled in the Philippines called pintados or "tattooed ones." Boholanos already had a culture of their own as evidenced by artifacts unearthed at Mansasa, Tagbilaran, and in Dauis and Panglao. SPANISH PERIOD ✘ On 25 March 1565, a Spanish explorer named Miguel López de Legazpi made a peace pact with Datu Sikatuna. This pact was signified with a blood compact between was called the Sandugo ("one blood"), is celebrated in Bohol every year during the Sandugo Festival. 5 Famous Tourist Attractions CHOCOLATE TARSIER BACLAYON HILLS SANCTUARY CHURCH 6 Literature ✘ There are hundreds of published Boholano writers (or Bol-anon writers) from the time Boholano literature emerged since the time of Boholano priestess Karyapa before the arrival of the Spaniards. ✘ Several groups were formed like Bahandi Writers of Loon, Bohol, Kaliwat ni Karyapa formed on September 8, 2000 and Society of Active Boholano Artists and Writers. KARYAPA CARLOS GARCIA MARJORIE EVASCO PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD 1896-1971 1953-PRESENT 7 Karyapa The first recorded poetess-shaman in Philippine History is a Boholana by the name of Karyapa. According to researcher Dr. Jes Tirol, Karyapa prophesized about the end of the Dapitan Kingdom in poetic verses and it did happen. There are also accounts saying that our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, himself, found the name Karyapa in Antonio de Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas. Currently, there is a writers’ collective in Bohol that is named after her – Kaliwat ni Karyapa. This organization has been an active stakeholder in the culture and arts sector of the province of Bohol since 1997. 8 Carlos P. Garcia Carlos Polistico García was born in Talibon, Bohol, Philippines on November 4, 1896. He was a Filipino teacher, poet, orator, lawyer, public official, political economist, guerrilla, and Commonwealth military leader who was the eighth President of the Philippines. 9 Marjorie Evasco Marjorie Evasco (born September 21, 1953) is a Filipino poet from Maribojoc, Bohol. She writes in two languages: English and Cebuano-Visayan and is a supporter of women's rights, especially of women writers. Marjorie Evasco is one of the earliest Filipina feminist poets. Evasco has received several Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards and she is a recipient of the S.E.A. Write Award. She has been published extensively in Asia, Europe and North America. Escapist Literature Bisaya Magasin (Cebuano publication) 22 Literature Cebuanos have a rich oral tradition, including legends associated with specific locales, like the Maria Cacao legends of southern Cebu and those of Lapulapu and his father Datu Manggal of Mactan; and folktales like the fable “Haring Gangis ug Haring Leon“, which warn of abusive behavior by the dominant group. Many of the tales carry lessons, but just as many suggest the value of humor, keeping of one’s wit and resourcefulness, as in the Juan Pusong trickster tales. 23 Literature Early poetic forms: - Garay (verses), - Harito (shaman’s prayers) - tigmo (riddles) - panultihon (proverbs). The generic form for poetry is BALAK - characterized by the presence of enigma or metaphor called balaybay or sambingay. Most of the poems are sung, like the occupational songs and lullabies. Balitaw - an extemporaneous poetic debate between man and woman that is sung and danced simultaneously. 24 Literature ✘ The prose narratives developed into the sugilanon or short story, the first example of which is “Maming”(1901) by Vicente Sotto. ✘ The Cebuano writer’s craft was honed in early translations of European fiction and imitations of American models, as shown in the works of Juan Villagonzalo, Uldarico Alviola, Angel Enemecio, Flaviano Boquecosa, Sulpicio Osorio, Nicolas Rafols and others 25 Thank you!
