GET AHEAD OF YOUR ALLERGIES THIS YEAR WITH THESE 3 SUPPLEMENTS+ OTHER STRATEGIES Dr. Taylor Krick @WashWellness / Washington Wellness Center WELCOME Allergy season sneaks up on us quickly, and most people forget about it until they get the usual itchy eyes and runny nose and then they run to CVS or Walgreens seeking immediate relief. This year, you can choose to be PROACTIVE instead of REACTIVE and get ahead of your allergies - before it’s too late! The following is a comprehensive plan to stop allergy and sinus symptoms in their tracks based on complex mucosal immunology research. It starts with supplement recommendations, because this helps explain the science and the mechanisms behind these allergy/sinus symptoms. I then provide a variety of potential “other” solutions, all of which are available through our website at Washington Wellness Center. Because I have suffered all of my life with ENT symptoms, including ear infections, tubes in my ears many times as a kid, chronic sinusitis, sinus infections, ear infections, multiple surgeries, my adenoids have been removed twice, recurrent nasal polyps, with an extensive history of steroids, inhalers, antibiotics, and more....so I have dedicated a lot of my life to researching the underlying immunology causing these conditions and others. My supplement recommendations aren’t based on some story like “My aunt tried this herbal vitamin and it really helped!” My recommendations are based on current immunology research, extensive personal experience, along with the clinical experiences of hundreds of my patients. These, I believe, are the 3 most important underlying factors to address when looking at supplementation for allergy and sinus symptoms in general. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention some of the important big picture concepts regarding allergies and sinus problems in general. WashWellnessCenter.com | Page 2 MOLD & INDOOR AIR QUALITY For starters, indoor mold exposure is the single most common root cause that I see for allergies and sinus issues. Mold “sensitizes'' the immune system, making it more reactive to allergens. This can actually lead to outdoor allergies such as hay fever or pollen. Mold depletes glutathione, which is implicated in most ENT conditions and protects the sinuses and lungs. Recurrent antibiotic usage fuels fungal sinus infections. According to a famous Mayo Clinic study over 90% of chronic sinusitis patients actually had fungal infection, so not only is mold part of the sinus infection itself, but mold toxins sensitize the immune system and make it overreactive to allergens like pollen and ragweed, but also to chemicals like fragrances and pesticides. I could go on and on about mold, but the bottom line is if you have allergies or sinus issues - consider mold exposure - currently or in your past. You have to be careful of your indoor environment! WashWellnessCenter.com | Page 3 Outdoor Air and Particulate Matter Many “seasonal allergies” are not true allergies (how many people have been let down by allergists thinking they would find ‘their magic trigger’ on allergy testing?!?), but these symptoms are actually your body’s reactions to a variety of airborne particulate matter, which here in the Midwest is at its worst around the time of planting and harvesting - spring and fall. There are many days here in Central Illinois where the sky is blue but the air quality is actually red, meaning BAD, and we are breathing in agricultural dust whether we can see it or not. I always joke that we are actually breathing the downwind airborne toxins from Nebraska and Iowa! There are mycotoxins (mold toxins), pesticides, grain dust, and other organic and inorganic particulates floating through the air. You have to be careful of your outdoor environment too! WashWellnessCenter.com | Page 4 ALL TOXINS MATTER You can’t hide from it today. Toxins are in the air, we are breathing them, our kids are breathing them, and allergies and sinus symptoms are just one of the negative health effects. Toxins, even things like perfumes, cleaners, personal care products - accumulate in your cells and tissues, and over time they shift your immune system towards being MORE reactive to the environment - more allergies, more food sensitivities, more symptoms. That’s why filtering your air, removing the source(s) of toxins, and working on strengthening your immune system are the best way to be PROACTIVE. WashWellnessCenter.com | Page 5 1.SUPPORT SINUS & LUNG TISSUE BARRIERS WITH GLUTATHIONE. Glutathione is known as your body’s master antioxidant and master detoxifying molecule. It detoxifies things such as mold toxins, heavy metals, and chemicals, and it also protects the mitochondria and the cell membrane from oxidative stress. Glutathione also protects the body’s “barrier systems” - including the gut lining, the blood-brain barrier, and the sinus and lung barriers. In fact, sinus and lung tissue contain more glutathione than any other cells in the body. These tissues also do more detoxification than any other cells in the body, which makes sense because they are often the first cells exposed to toxins as we breathe them in! Glutathione also supports the immune system “tolerance”, with a preponderance towards supporting Th1 differentiation, which helps shift the body away from “allergies” and sinus inflammation. This is explained further below. Glutathione is depleted in most ENT symptoms, including sinusitis, allergies, and asthma. Replenishing glutathione not only helps support the sinus and lung tissue, but supports the brain, the gut, the liver, and nearly every function in the body. Trizomal Glutathione from Apex Energetics is our most popular product and it’s my #1 recommendation for any sinus, lung, allergy or ENT issue. WashWellnessCenter.com | Page 6 2.STABILIZE MAST CELLS SO THEY PRODUCE LESS HISTAMINE. Many people are familiar with the fact that histamine is part of an allergic response, creating symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, feeling all stuffed up. Antihistamines can help block histamine, but something called Mast Cells actually release histamine, along with hundreds of other inflammatory mediators, so blocking histamine only helps reduce the symptoms produced from histamine. Certain vitamins and herbs can help stabilize mast cells so they produce less histamine, including things such as Quercetin, Bromelain, and Vitamin C. I like Histo-X from Apex Energetics to stabilize mast cells and decrease histamine production! WashWellnessCenter.com | Page 7 3.DECREASE TH2-MEDIATED INFLAMMATION. Your body has what is called an Innate Immune System and an Adaptive Immune System. The adaptive immune system is the one responsible for allergies. In your adaptive immune system you have several “branches” of immune cells called “T helper Cells”, the main branches being called Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg. Think of this like the branches of the military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps. Th2 cells are recruited to be made when something needs “flushed out”, like a parasite or an allergen, so allergy/sinus symptoms are associated with something called Th2 Dominance, which is often seen in people with chronic sinus or allergies, or autoimmune conditions. Certain vitamins and herbs have been shown to decrease Th2 inflammation. Th2 modulator has been an absolute game-changer in my life personally and in my practice! I like Th2 Modulator from Pure Encapsulations to decrease Th2 Inflammation! WashWellnessCenter.com | Page 8 EXTRA CREDIT Here are some other general recommendations that you can try in addition to the above supplements: High-Quality Air Purifier This recommendation makes sense I’m sure, but did you know that using a lower quality air purifier could actually be doing more harm than good? I’m all for low budget solutions, but in this category I recommend the best quality - Austin Air Purifiers. It’s not the most expensive one out there, but it’s the highest value. This has also been a game changer for me personally! Neti Pot/Nasal Rinse Rinsing the sinuses 2x/day can help dramatically. Things get stuck in your nasal passages and mucus - dust, pollen, ragweed, dander, mold - and the longer it stays stuck in there the more irritation and S A T U R D AitY :creates, which creates more mucus to try to flush it out. inflammation To reduce this, rinse your nose 2x/day with saline solution, or you can use things like essential oils or colloidal silver in your rinse. WashWellnessCenter.com | Page 9 EXTRA CREDIT CONTINUED Essential Oils You can nebulize oils, use them in a neti pot or nasal rinse, or inhale these oils directly, but I don’t think diffusing does much besides make the room smell good. I like using oils such as Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Spearmint, Thyme, Frankincense for the antibacterial and antifungal properties, as well as helping to open up the airways. I’ve even used essential oils to get rid of nasal polyps several times! Nebulizer A nebulizer typically uses a mask or a mouthpiece to deliver something (typically medication) directly to your lungs and sinuses. You can nebulize saline, or you can add essential oils or colloidal silver to “kill” any infections such as sinus bacterial or fungal infections. I even have patients nebulize a special form of glutathione so it gets directly to those tissues! Colloidal Silver SATURDAY: Colloidal Silver is a good “killer”, so I occasionally will use a colloidal silver nose spray if I’m suspecting a sinus infection of some degree.
