Cannabis tincture is the essential oils of the Cannabis plant suspended in an edible solvent such as everclear. This guide is written specifically about ethanol/ everclear tincture. Everclear tincture has too high an alcohol content to hold in the mouth for sublingual absorption (unless diluted with a ML or so of water) - if sublingual ROA is your intention look for a guide using vegetable glycerin as a solvent. High proof ethanol based tincture is a healthy and efficient alternative to smoking or vaping cannabis/hash. It is easily used as an additive to foods cooked on the stove top, squirted into beverages, or dosed directly and chased by drink to avoid alcohol burn. If not cooked into food, it is important to take tincture just before or during a meal, or in accompaniment with alcoholic beverages. Fatty foods and alcohol both increase the speed and efficiency of THC absorption. This guide will discuss two subtypes of tincture: Rosin Tincture, and Flower Tincture. Rosin tincture requires a rosin press, or you can just buy rosin. Flower tincture is made with flower, keif, shake, trim, or a mix of all. There are a lot of assumptions made in this guide regarding potency calculations as I have no way of testing the potency of my flower/rosin. However, I think they are likely within a reasonable margin of error as the tincture feels on par with the similar doses of dispensary edibles. FLOWER TINCTURE You need the the following items: - Weed/keif/shake/trim - Everclear - Accurate oven - Mason jars - Turkey bag (optional) - Coffee Grinder or hand grinder - Paper towel / old shirt / coffee filter - Metal strainer Disclaimer: The following potency calculations are made based on shaky assumptions and bro-science. It also assumes 100% efficiency in extraction which is probably not the case. Assuming your flower is 20% THC, an ounce would give 5600mg THCA. After we convert the inactive THCA into the active THC via decarboxylation, we lose somewhere around 15% of our THCA weight, leaving us with 4760mg of THC. My favorite concentration for tincture is 20mg / ml, the oils of the plant have plenty of solvent and space to keep them in suspension. If we were to use the 20% THC ounce mentioned above, and targeted 20 mg/ml potency, we would divide our 4760mg of THC / 20mg = 238ml, or about a cup. You can use this formula to play with stronger potencies, but using less solvent will make the tincture very oil rich, it has a tendency to just freeze and form a skein of oil in a drink or in your mouth. Good cooked in food though. We will use the 20% 1 ounce flower example above for the following directions. 1. Preheat oven to 250f 2. Grind flower in coffee grinder 3. (optional) to avoid smell, put ground weed in a turkey bag and tie a knot to seal it shut. 4. Put weed on a tray in the oven, set timer for 1 hour 30 minutes. 5. After 1 hour 30 minutes, take out cannabis flower and let cool for ten minutes. 6. While cannabis is cooling, measure 238ml (1 cup) of everclear or other 190 proof alcohol equivalent and pour in mason jar. 7. Add ground/baked cannabis to alcohol in mason jar. 8. Tighten lid. Shake vigorously for 10 minutes. 9. Let sit for one hour. 10. Take off lid, find another large vessel like a bowl or a glass measuring cup to strain into. Put metal strainer on bowl, add filter in form of paper towel or t shirt. 11. Prime filter with everclear from the bottle before straining (just dump a little clear liquor on the filter to get it wet). 12. Slowly and carefully pour flower/alcohol mixture over the filter. Make sure to get all the wet flower out, but be careful not to overwhelm/overflow your filter. When sufficiently drained gently massage/swqueeze the filter to push out remaining tincture. 13. You may filter once more through a finer filter such as a coffee filter. Ta-da! You have a tincture that is probably around 20mg/ml. Shake before use, take with food/alcohol. ROSIN TINCTURE You need rosin, or a rosin press to press your rosin. I am assuming you know how to do that already, but if not there are many great resources online. Other things you will need: - Ceramic cup or glass shot glass/ small cup - Everclear - Accurate oven - Mason jars - Turkey bag (optional) - Coffee Grinder or hand grinder - Paper towel / old shirt / coffee filter - Metal strainer - Hot water - Some cups and bowls Disclaimer: The following potency calculations are made based on shaky assumptions and bro-science. It also assumes 100% efficiency in extraction which is probably not the case. We will assume for this guide that we have 10 grams of rosin that is 80% THCA, giving us 6800mg of THC after decarboxylation. We will aim for a potency of 20mg/ml, dividing our 6800mg THC by 20mg gives us 340ml of ethanol. 1. Preheat oven to 250f. 2. Take 10g rosin and put in a small glass or ceramic cup. 3. (optional) to avoid smell wrap cup in a large turkey bag and tie a knot in it. 4. Place cup with rosin on a small tray in the oven and leave in at 250f for 120 minutes. 5. While Rosin decarbs, pour 340 ml of everclear or other 190 proof alcohol into a cup. 6. 30 min before decab time is up - Place hot tap water or boiled water in a bigger cup or bowl, place cup of everclear nesting in this cup to warm the everclear. This is done to make the decarbed rosin dissolve faster, if it hits cold everclear it solidifies in globs before dissolving. 7. Once timer runs out take out rosin be very careful with the cup. Use oven mitts. Do not spill. 8. Let it cool for 10 minutes or so, then carefully dump rosin into the warm ethanol. Alternatively you can use an oral syringe to transfer the rosin into the warm ethanol. 9. Stir warm ethanol/rosin mixture with a butter knife for 10 minutes. 10. Depending on how clean your rosin is, you may want to give it a pass through a strainer. Refer to straining steps 10-12 in flower tincture recipe, but with your rosin tincture. Ta-da! You have a tincture that is probably around 20mg/ml. Shake before use, take with food/alcohol.
