Proud Sponsors of AFCC's White Playing Kit 01724 271451 54 High Street, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, DN15 6SX Chairman’s Report Following a truncated 2020 season, the leadership group worked hard over the winter to strengthen our squad and leading into our centenary year we successfully secured the services of Drew Sylvester, Joe Baker and Jordan Cook. I was very confident that we had assembled a highly competitive squad and there was an expectation within the group that we should be challenging at the top end of the table; however, even the most positive amongst us didn’t envisage what was to lie ahead. It’s a fantastic achievement to be crowned champions of the Yorkshire Southern Premier League and credit must go to Sheffield Collegiate CC who chased us to the end and I’m sure they will be a major challenger in 2022. As we know, this group weren’t satisfied with just being crowned league winners and they went on to complete an unprecedented and historic clean sweep convincingly beating Driffield CC in the final of the Viking Knockout Cup and securing the treble with a comfortable victory over Barnsley CC in the final of the T20 competition. The narrow defeats to Woodlands CC in the Yorkshire play off semi-final and Alderley Edge CC at the semi-final stage of the National Knockout has sharpened the players’ appetite for 2022 and I hope this is just a launch pad for a sustained period of success. On reflection, I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved and Matt Fowler can now go into the history books alongside Salim Uddin as one of only two App Frod captains to lift the Premier League title. It’s a cliché that teams win titles and this was evident in the way the squad dovetailed with different individuals contributing with match winning performances when it mattered. Our skipper led from the front having moved into the openers slot and alongside Alex Grimes, forged an excellent opening partnership with both openers returning 750+ league runs. Kieran Lindley consistently made positive contributions with both bat and ball and in his debut season with the club, Joe Baker proved to be a highly valuable asset and was fittingly crowned as the league’s leading bowler. A special mention should go to Paul Hilton who finished third in the league bowling averages. Hilly is a fantastic example to our younger players, highlighting the value of years of dedication and hard work as he continues to produce the goods showing no sign of regression. 2021 also marked the full return of our 2nd XI into the Lincs Premier League. Whilst the obvious improvement in standard would be a challenge we were confident that we had a side which was more than capable of competing at this level.Throughout the season, the bowling attack consistently delivered putting the team in winning positions with Mo Ayub leading the way. Unfortunately, the batting group failed to gain any momentum with only the skipper, Simon Taylor and Kieran Watson scoring over 350 runs and it was the lack of consistency with the bat which led to relegation. It’s essential that we continue to strengthen the quality of the 2nd XI and the progress we’ve made across the junior section will soon pay dividends as we now have more than 100 children attending our junior sessions. Our junior programme is very much a collective effort and we’re very lucky that we have so many willing volunteers who give up their time to ensure the next generation get a positive first experience of our game. We’ve laid the foundations, now the focus is on nurturing this talent through the pathway into the senior teams. On a personal note, I’d like to thank the committee and the members who wholeheartedly get behind everything we do and it’s testament to the collective as to why we well and truly punch above our weight both on and off the field. RIP Roger Kearsley In January of this year the club was in deep mourning having lost one of its most loyal and dedicated colleagues, Roger Kearsley Roger passed away after a relatively short illness at the age of 70 leaving behind his loving wife Jill and his devoted children Lloyd, Lester and Layne. Roger had been a mainstay of our club since the middle of the 1960’s when he joined the club as a schoolboy and played for the intermediate sides and second and third teams. After leaving University he returned to Scunthorpe to join British Steel and was an important part in the new computer department which was in its infancy. He became a member of the AFCC committee and stayed on the committee for the next 50 years. On the playing field Roger was a very competent middle order batsman, fine wicketkeeper and an occasional leg spin bowler. He was a wonderful team member. Always available, rarely injured and a great person to share a dressing room with. Never complaining and a great example to all the younger players. He was a student of the game and always gave excellent support to the captain of the day. Cricket clubs the length and breadth rely heavily on volunteers in the running of their clubs and Roger epitomised this with his wonderful service away from the field of play. For over 50 years Roger held numerous positions in the club ranging from Team Captain, Treasurer, Fixture Secretary and was the clubs representative on the Athletic Clubs executive committee for the last decade. However, it was his role as club secretary from 1979 to 1991 where he really excelled. Roger was totally committed to the role and worked tirelessly to ensure that the club was run smoothly and efficiently and the club would be eternally grateful for all his hard work. He was made a Life Member of the club for his contributions. Away from cricket Roger was a keen supporter of Scunthorpe United which, as we all know, has been a torrid time the last few years. He was a keen photograper and this led to him being the clubs official photographer and it was he that provided many of the photos for annual handbook. Rogers funeral took place on 7th February with family, club players, officials and ex- work collegues in atttendance. It woud be amiss not to mention Rogers Mum and Dad , Bet and Ron, who also served the club for many years. It was Rogers wish that his ashes be spread at Brumby Hall along side those of his Mum and Dad. This wish was duly done on March 13th, Rogers birthday. The occasion was attended by family members and club officials. TREBLE WINNERS APRIL The league season got underway with a home victory against Elsecar. Half-centuries from Alex Grimes and Kieran Lindley lay the foundations for a solid start to the campaign. However it was debutant, Joe Baker who stole the headlines, kicking off his Frod career in style picking up his first (of three) five wicket haul of the season. The following week we travelled to Hallam and registered two wins from two in April. MAY Playing host to Wakefield Thornes, we recorded our first defeat of the season failing to chase down a modest 172 set by our visitors. Bouncing back from a disappointing defeat we closed out May with five wins from five games. A comprehensive 10 wicket victory at home to Barnsley Wooley Miners where the new ball partnership of Joe Baker and Paul Hilton did the damage sharing seven wickets. Our Viking Cup challenge got off to an explosive start with overseas player Jamar Ifill blasting 112 from 67 balls against Hallam. An Alex Grimes century and a second Joe Baker ‘five-for’ were the chief protagonists in an 180 run victory over Tickhill; however, it was a low scoring thriller away to Doncaster Town at the end May which added weight to the opinion that Frod were now becoming genuine title contenders. At 73-8, Liam Grimes was joined by Matthew Harris. The ninth wicket pair blunted the Doncaster attack and an unbroken 36 run partnership saw the team to what at one point looked a very unlikely victory. JUNE Beginning the month sitting at the top of the pile, the Doncaster scare provided the team with the catalyst they needed as they went on to record a further seven wins from seven games across all competitions! Notable performances throughout June included a second 90 of the season for Alex Grimes (Cawthorne), 90* from Matt Morland in the Viking Cup (Stamford Bridge), explosive batting from Messrs Fowler (69), Ifill (84), and Lindley (70) setting Whitley Hall the highest total of the year (296) but the highlight of the month was our trip to Abbeydale Park on 12th June to take on a strong Sheffield Collegiate side who many had tipped for the title. Frod posted a competitive total of 217-7, thanks to Alex Grimes leading the way with a well-constructed 57 and solid contributions spread across the top order. After tea, an outstanding collective effort from our bowling attack tore holes in the Collegiate top order and the home side slumped to 103 all out. This was arguably the most complete team performance of the season and the Brumby Hall faithful were starting to quietly whisper about a potential league title. JULY Off the back of a 12 game winning streak confidence was high and we were starting to put some distance between our nearest title challengers. Following two further victories against Hallam (League) and Sheriff Hutton Bridge (Cup), the side travelled to Field Lane looking to make it 15 wins on the bounce against a competitive Wakefield Thornes side. Having been set an above par target of 218 by the home side, the visitors run chase looked in real trouble at 53-4 when Matt Morland joined Jamar Ifill in the middle. An explosive counter-attack from the Barbadian (57 from 47 balls) swung back the momentum and Ifill was eventually removed with the scoreboard reading 131-5. Morland continued to chip away at the Thornes total, well supported by Drew Sylvester, Liam Grimes and Joe Baker leaving the Steelmen requiring nine from the final over. A dot ball from the first delivery wasn’t the ideal start followed by a quick scampered two. Morland (67*) then launched the third ball of the over for six, levelling the scores before a scrambled single sealed the win. Victory tasted even sweeter that evening as the news filtered through that title contenders Treeton had lost! What a difference a week makes. Buoyed by the Wakefield victory and the 15 game winning streak, first place welcomed second place as Treeton made the trip to North Lincolnshire. Dismissing our visitors for 147 and having reached 62-2 in our run chase the title was well within our grasp. Unfortunately a batting collapse left us 20 runs short with Kieran Lindley left stranded on 65 not out. Focussed on quickly bouncing back the following week our batting woes were put behind us as opening pair, Matt Fowler (140*) and Alex Grimes (75*) closed out July registering a new club record opening partnership, chasing down Wickersley’s total of 225 from 34 overs. AUGUST On 1st August we took a break from league duty having qualified for the Area Finals of the National T20 Blast which was hosted at Lindum CC. We faced Derbyshire Premier League qualifiers, Spondon CC who limped to a total of 56 which was quickly chased down. In the final we met Bracebridge Heath (Lincolnshire Premier League) who had earlier defeated the West Indian Cavaliers (Nottinghamshire Premier League). Half-centuries from openers Fowler and Ifill laid the foundation as we posted a highly competitive 159. On a difficult batting track the Bracebridge innings fell away and they finished 50 runs short of the target and the Steelmen would progress to the T20 Blast Northern Finals Day as Area Champions. Returning to league business we suffered our third league defeat of the season at the hands of Barnsley Wooley Miners falling 16 runs short of the target. Tickhill provided the opportunity to bounce back and what was starting to become a bumpy period was epitomised in this rollercoaster of a game which saw opening bowler Matty Harris remove the first three Tickhill batsman for ducks. The away side rallied and posted a respectable total of 177 on a pitch which was offering plenty to the bowlers. At 23-4, Matt Morland joined Jordan Cook and the pair went on to score half-centuries with the latter delivering a match winning innings of 72 not out in what was a nail biting climax. Returning to pink ball duty we experienced mix fortunes narrowly losing to North West Area Final winners Alderley Edge in the T20 Blast Northern Final. In the Viking Cup we booked our ticket to the Final with a comfortable seven wicket home semi-final victory over Wakefield Thornes. On Saturday 28th August we welcomed second placed Sheffield Collegiate to Brumby Hall knowing that a victory would see us crowned champions. On a difficult batting wicket the visitors were inserted to bat and Messrs Baker, Hilton, and Lindley all registered three wickets a-piece, dismissing Collegiate for 94. A dogged 27 from skipper Fowler, ably supported by Jordan Cook (29*) were the backbone of the run chase and a memorable victory was registered and we were crowned league champions with a game to spare! A special mention needs to go to the Collegiate captain, Josh Varley who in the heat of the battle had the presence of mind and the sporting grace to withdraw an appeal which led to the standing umpire revoking a decision to dismiss Fowler at a pivotal point in the run chase. A fantastic act of Sportsmanship. Winners medals seem to be like London buses and before the hangover from Saturday’s celebration could wear off we were being crowned Yorkshire Southern Premier League T20 Champions! Matt Fowler lifted the league T20 trophy after a relatively comfortable victory over Barnsley Wooley Miners in the final. Two down, one to go. SEPTEMBER In comparison to August, September was a slightly more sedate affair; however, there remained room for further drama. We signed off our league campaign with a home victory to Whitley Hall with one eye on the following day. A large contingent boarded the coach to Woodhouse Grove where we faced Driffield Town (Yorkshire Premier League North) in the Viking Cup Final. Our North Yorkshire opponents won the toss and elected to bat first, but were soon in trouble at 58-6 thanks in the main to the outstanding bowling of Joe Baker, Matthew Harris and Paul Hilton. Man-of-the Match Hilton finished with excellent figures of 3-11 in 6.3 overs as we eventually dismissed Driffield for 126 in the 27th over. After the tea interval, Captain Fowler and Grimes set our run chase off to a great start as they put on 62 runs for the first wicket. Fowler fell just short of a deserved half-century when he was dismissed for a well-made 47, so it was left to vice-captain Kieran Lindley to steer us home to a seven-wicket triumph with an unbeaten 45 off 52 balls. In our Centenary Season we became the first side to complete the Treble! Having qualified for the Yorkshire Premier Leagues Championship play off we hosted Bradford League champions, Woodlands CC. Electing to make first use of the pitch the Frod top order struggled to gain any momentum with only Alex Grimes making any impact on the scorecard with a hard fought 30. At 70-4 Matt Morland joined Jamar Ifill and the Barbadian countered the tight Woodlands bowling scoring a quick-fire 55. Ifill departed at 142-5 and when Morland (24) was run out, the innings fell away and we were dismissed for a sub-par 165. In their reply, Woodlands made a steady start reaching 29-0 but a high quality spell from spin bowler Kieran Lindley (4-40) shifted the momentum and the away side slumped to 51-4. Woodlands, New Zealand batsman Schmulian (62*) remained resolute as wickets continued to fall and at 112-8 the momentum of the tie had swung firmly in Frod’s favour. Kez Ahmed joined his skipper and the off spinner produced a match winning knock (29*) as the pair amassed 54 for the tenth wicket to bring down the curtain on what can only be described as an unforgettable season. 1XI Batting Statistics 2021 Season Name Inns N.O. Jordan Neil: Born in Johannesburg but now based in Pretoria, most of my family are from the UK. I would love to have a career in cricket. I'm really looking forward to staying in a brand new overseas environment away from home and outside South Africa. I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing in English condition and joining up with a new group of players and hope to be able to make a positive contribution as we look to defend our title. Having previously visited the UK as a teenager, I’m looking forward to seeing more of the country and immersing myself in all aspects of club life. Michael Salomon: I’m an avid sportsman that played two years first team rugby and three years cricket at Centurion High school, to this day I still hold the school record for the highest individual score of 249* in an U15A league game. I made my senior club debut at the age of 14 for Irene Villagers 2nd team. For the past 3 years I have been a permanent member of the first team. Last year I helped the Irene Villagers 1st team achieve the unthinkable in winning the league for the first time in the club’s prestigious history. I am hard working, focused and an excellent team player. My ultimate goal is to play county cricket and beyond and I’m excited about the opportunity to challenge myself in a new environment and help the club progress both on and off the field.
