But, Peter Stuyvesant began to change. First, he attacked and took over land that Dutch people owned in Fort Orange, further up the Hudson River. Then he wanted people who were Jewish and in the Quaker church to leave. Dutch leaders back in the Netherlands told him to leave the Jews and Quakers alone. Peter Stuyvesant then wanted New Netherland to expand into Connecticut, which the English claimed. This angered the English. The letter said that if he surrendered, anyone who declared loyalty to the English king would not be hurt, could keep their homes and farms, and would still enjoy freedom. Peter Stuyvesant tore up the letter. Stuyvesant refused to surrender. He ordered his soldiers to prepare for war. But, the New Amsterdam settlers did not wish to fight. They were outnumbered by the English. Also, they thought that Stuyvesant’s rule was unfair. So the colonists convinced Peter Stuyvesant to surrender. Nicolls renamed the colony “New York” to honor Prince James, the Duke of York. Nicolls became the first governor of New York. He made laws to protect the colonist’s rights, keeping his promise.
