In your view, what is “LEO”? A. It is one of the most accessible and powerful platforms for youth empowerment. Young fellows can engage and serve the community; learning some life changing skills like team build- ing, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and ultimately the leadership skills simply by get- ting involved in social work. Q. What are the things you have gained through the LEO movement? A. Almost everything which I have now, apart from my academic knowledge/skills. I suffered a lot with bullying in my school days, which turned me out as an introvert with low confidence. I couldn’t even speak confidently with people; somehow a shy and nervous lad. When I joined the LEO movement, I started slow. After volunteering on the social activities of Lions Club, I kind of started feeling lively. The gasp of satisfaction after volunteering slowly de- veloped an obsession towards it. After few years, I found myself exhibiting skills to make friends, interact with people, and exe- cute the tasks assigned by seniors. Right away, I found myself quite effective in managing social work projects, allocating tasks to other Leo members, analyzing their interest and skills, and motivating them to carry out the tasks as a team. I became club president on 2010/11 and during that tenure; we performed nearly 100 projects, grabbing many important awards from district and multiple. Next year, I worked in district as a region Co-ordinator, which I claim my all-time favorite tenure, where I motivated 5 clubs under my region to do several activities. All of them succeeded to be enlisted within top 10 clubs of the district in final award ceremony. I led the district team on 2012/13 where we accomplished many historic achievements. So this platform completely swapped a timid person to one of the most successful Leo leaders of Nepal. I was not at all a university topper, but today I am one of the growing youth entrepre- neurs of the country, co-founding nearly half a dozen of enterprises. I shied away from asking questions to my teacher in my school days, but now I can speak effectively in front of any num- ber of audiences. I succeeded to win 1000(s) of national/international friends across the globe being a Leo. Putting an end to all these background, I believe, I gained a real me through the LEO move- ment. Official Newsletter | Leo District 306 A2 7 Q. How do you feel about volunteering for community service? A. Volunteering is entirely about working to- wards the welfare of others. We perform a lot of work for ourselves and our family members but stepping ahead of that boundary to work for the well-being of community always endows us a dif- ferent flavor of joy, happiness and satisfaction. Furthermore it also empowers us to be a better person, bringing a lot of management and lead- ership skills. No matter how rich or poor we are, there are always more as well as less privileged people in our commu- Representing Nepal in the International Leo Youth Camp nity /nation/globe. There is always a space for the ones held at Bangladesh (2012) who seek to volunteer for community service. If you want to be a leader, it’s very easy; do social work in regular intervals of time and all other metamorphic abilities will come to you automat- ically. They come without an alarm, slowly and strongly, and you’ll experience a bright change within you. Q. You were a Club President and had a wide range of experiences in Leo Movement. How could you manage your personal life while giving your best to your District? A. Well, there are 24 hours in a day and as per the health experts, around 7-8 hours of good sleep Well, there are 24 hours in a day and as per the health experts, around 7-8 hours of good sleep is sufficient enough to run ourselves in an active way. We have around 16 hours of time each day to complete our activities. Even if we work or study 10 hours a day, we still have ad- equate free time each day for the productive extra work. It’s all about time management, pas- sion, and dedication. We can meet any heights giving a small effort each day, but we should be strict to do it regularly. Rolling back the memory of my presidential tenure of the Kathmandu Balaju Height Leo Club, our BOD made a nice yearly plan of action right after we got elected in the AGM. I used to be very concerned about the efficiency and effectiveness of our monthly meetings. So we generally had meetings with the participation of 25+ members (more than 80%), where we used to plan for the next month activities and create a team for each project. I loved sharing my leadership to the project coordinators, trusting their abilities and motivating on their endeavors. To do all these, I just needed my weekend days and a few minutes each day for the communi- cation purpose. Q. Where do you think LEO movement stands among other social service organiza- tions in the world? A. Well, I have a very intimate relation with LEOS of Sri Lanka. I think they are smart, friendly and kind. I find them delivering a lot of innovative concepts of social works and volunteering to the world. I have worked with them closely in many international joint projects. Sri Lankan Clubs: Kottawa Central Golden City Leo Club, University of Moratuwa Leo Club, Carey College Leo Club, etc. were spectacular in joining hands in our popular international Leo cam- paign “Silent Symphonies”. ”. I had a very good experience working with Kalubowila Leo Club in PROJECT WHIZ KID in 2012. PDP Leo Isuru Senadheera, my good friend, became club president and district president on the same lionistic year as I did, and we used to share a lot of dynamic ideas with each other. I learned many things from my other good friends there: Leo Ke- sari Seneviratne, Leo Hiranya Nayanaprabha Perera, Leo Hemamali Yasintha Rathnayake, Leo Inzar Iqbal, Leo Damith Amarakoon. Not only Leos, I regularly get blessings and support from Lion Cyril Wickramaratne, and PIP Lion Mahendra Ama- rasuriya. Receiving the “Leadership Award”, presented by Interviewed By: Leo Kulani Jayathilake Lions District 325 B1, Nepal (2013) 8 Official Newsletter | Leo District 306 A2 6 “HELP” Leo Club of Katuwawala “HELP” was a project organized by the Leo Club of Katuwawala to give a hand to the residential clients at the “Sethsewana” Drug Rehab center, Thalangama. The project was conducted to donate Medicinal Drugs, Clothing Items, Dry Food Items and Sanitary Items. This also gave us a chance to peep into their world where they struggle to overcome the darkness that the addiction has brought in to their lives and furthermore we were able to share thoughts with both the male and female clients. They made a humble request from all of us. That is to become a messenger to the out- side world to give this message; “we will be cured; we will erase our desire to have drugs; we will be coming out in no time but if the society is not ready to give us a second chance and accept us, we might fall back.” So, whenever you meet one of them remember the oath we take as Leos. We pledge ourselves to see the plight of others and to make a man closer to his dreams. So it’s time to put those words into action. Unfortunately, we are not able to bring those moments to you since their identity should be kept a secret. Yet, you’re invited to extend your helping hands! The millennial generation, to which Leos belong to, is affected the most. Millennial obsession with technology is also a health concern as it doesn’t encourage a person to be active, often leading to obesity and other related health conditions. This project, albeit ambiguously named “Tin Tin” referring to the famous cartoon haracter, was organized by the Leos of Piliyandala with the main intention of eviv- ing the childhood game of Tin Kadeema, This is a two-sided game where a team is challenged to rebuild a pile of tins and the other team prevents the building team from achieving their ambition. The project saw the first major participation of the newest Leo Club in the district- Leo Club of Centennial Sri Lanka Technological Campus. The new Leos were able to get to know Leos from Bulathsinhala, Polgasowita, Katuwawala Leo clubs. In a world where children and young adults throw Poké balls to capture virtual crea- tures (Pokémons), we believe that this fun project helped Leos to actively socialize and build fellowship upholding the essence of Leoism. The game was paused for lunch and resumed until the finals match. Winners were presented gifts by the project lead – Leo Sithum Fernando and the Immediate Past District President – Leo Pramod Wimalatunga. Leo Club of Piliyandala plans to author a Wikipedia page preserving the knowledge of this game for the coming generations. Thanks to the geniuses. of Leos of Piliyandala, Tin Kadeema is no longer a thing in past. Article by: Leo Club of Baddegama A meaningful life is not being rich, being popular being highly educated or being perfect. It’s about being real, being humble, being able to share ourselves and touch the lives of others. # A Tip to tap your Mind Official Newsletter | Leo District 306 A2 13 11 ENCOUNTER OUR PIONEER Leo Kesari is a proud product of Holy Family Convent, Colombo 04 and currently she reads for a Double Major in International Business and Business Management at Acbt. This is a Q&A with the Centennial District President Leo Kesari Seneviratne PMJF to recall her memories of her Leo career and to share her vision. Q. How did you start this journey? What is your personal opinion about being a Leo? A. Well I became a Leo ten years ago to serve the needy and to create many smiles as I could in the society, where it was needed. I was introduced to share this vision of Leoism through my parents and I have seen my sister being an active participant in the service as a young girl. In my opnion, Leoism is a blessing upon me and anyone, to meet and have many friends in life and to have an aim together with that family of friends, to serve the needy and to make a change. Q. What was your exact feeling when you decided to be the District President? What made you to take the decision to be the Centennial District President? A. Haha, I decided to be a District President when I was 8 years old and that was seen as my father was in the verge of been a District Governor. My feeling then was to be a part of something big and to do big projects to serve a bigger portion of the community. Well, during the journey from then, I realized I do not have to do BIG, I just have to do small yet significant acts to all. Well, to be honest, I did not aim to be the CENTENNIAL District President but I wanted to be the DP in 2016/17 from those days without knowing the momentous of it. However, the destiny just brought me up here with all the support, blessings and guidance from the past leaders, because more than my dream it was their opportunities in my path made this a reality. Q. In a society with a certain extent of male dominance do you consider being a very young female leader is a challenge? A. I used to believe that we still live in a stereotyped society, where leadership title belongs to men! But then again, the Leo acts proved it wrong! Being a very young female leader out in the Leo move- ment, some scenarios were presented as a challenge. Yet again, I state this was the biggest advantage I had in my journey, being young gave me the opportunity to adapt to change at any time presented where for others it was quite hard. Being a female also presented many restrictions in front of me, yet again in the movement where sisters and brothers work together, I do not believe it ever came across as a barrier to success or to move forward. And all I can say is that in the future there won’t be any “female leaders” There will just be Leaders. Q. This year we have the Leo ISSAME forum taking place in Sri Lanka. How would you express this as an opportunity to our Leos? A. This is once in a lifetime opportunity as this creates the platform to meet and greet all the Interna- tional Lions and Leo Leaders from all over the world. This is will be a massive investment not only for - 14 Official Newsletter | Leo District 306 A2 Leo journey but also for our future. Being a delegate or a volunteer will make you flourish in the future forward march. Q. What are the CHANGES you expect to make/add to this Leo movement in your year of leadership? A. Well my only aim is to build SYNERGY among us! We see many of our Leos excelling in their own way, which is really good, yet my hope and aim is to see them excelling together with others. And to reach excellence in team wise is harder if they do not own synergy. Synergy is the energy that unleashes within the Leos that leads them to reach a sum that is higher than the individual outputs. So my aim is to make the change where all will be winners in reaching excellence through synergy! Q. In addition to all the numerous achievements you have obtained, you became the Leo of the Dis- trict, Leo of Sri Lanka and finally, the Leo of the World. What do you feel about this great achievement? A. One day when I look back at the journey, I will remember and will cherish all the good and happy memories along with the sisters and brothers I met in this Leo movement. The recognitions and appreci- ations in all forms will make me reach higher and move further, but what I feel is, more than the awards, the people I reached in this movement is my success and my true achievement. Q. What do you feel about the journey you have come so far? A. It was not a walk in the park. Many would think coming from a strong Lions background, all things in Leoism came out easily and smoothly for me. But fortunately, NO! Why I say no is because looking back at the challenges I have faced, those have made me who I am. Personally, I consider being a Leo in A2 is a blessing for me because it has created so many great leaders before me and they truly knew when to present opportunities to the ones waiting. So count me as a person who is eager to grab any opportunity presented. Q. There are very well known pillars of strength behind you. How would you mention the support you get from your family and friends? A. It would be a lie if I say my family isn’t the base of my journey so far. Having a father who guides and stands by me always and a mother who listens and console all my rants is truly my luck. Mostly, many would think my sister and brother are out of the Leo picture since they are far away. Well, if I am to brief out my sister’s role in my Leo life, the answer to the following question would sum it up. If someone asks me who I might follow in Leoism? It would be my sister. In friends wise, I’m glad to say that all the Familians and Acbt friends are a blessing as they always pres- ent themselves to support me in all Leo acts. Last but not least, I cannot forget my Leo family itself! It is truly and deeply because of them I stand today in holding a title! Titles don’t actually matter once your vision is their mission! Each and Every Past Dis- trict President is owning to whatever the success I have achieved. Then again all the other Leos around me under the banner of Leoism truly taught me what is real humanity is and how unity reaches higher and further than alone! So my pillars of strength and success are each and every Leo of 306 A2! Q. What would be your advice for our Leos? A. My advice for all out there, is to be pure and devoted! Positive minds, motivated hearts and in- spired souls will lead you to winning actions! Remember! This is your opportunity to live a year of ser- vice! A year of recognition! A year of celebration! Make it count and inspire all others to reach excellence through synergy! Previ- ously they have made the path to understand nature and how to maintain the bond with the Nature. As the Chapter II Leos have done a big contribution to maintain the Eco Garden with the teachings they had obtained in the last year. As we all know Pili- yandala Leos have passed a Green Year with many experiences with the Nature. So the founder and the Chairperson of Eco friendly Volunteers, Mrs. Kanchana Weerakoon mentioned that with the dry Season and also due to her fracture in her arm, she want some helping hands to maintain the garden. As a response to that, Piliyandala Leos conducted SUGADAARAM II by joining the prospect Leos to let them have the idea they missed in the previous Year. As they enter into the Eco Garden there was a new look at the corner of the garden. The well was covered with a wooden frame and it was made to carry the water inside the well to the surface of the land. Leos were able to renew the water inside the well and also clean the inner wall. While Leos were having the Lunch, Mrs. Kanchana mentioned about the conscious consumerism which is a subject recently came out. She gave many life lessons throughout the day to all our prospects and our Leos. Piliyandala Leos will continue to provide their service to the community with the new theme for the fiscal year 2016/17 “Rekagamu Apekama” and also the bond with Leo and ECO-V will always be strong under the leadership of Leo Indika Dananjaya Landekumbura, Centennial Club Presi- dent of Leo Club of Piliyandala. We launched the very first International twinning project linking with the occasion of the first anniversary of the Leo club of Butwal Manimukunda. UOM Leos spent the day at the Methodist Elders Home, Moratmulla while on the same day the Leo Club of Butwal Manimukunda spent the day with dif- ferently abled children at Butwal-13, Nepal. It is said that how far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant with the weak and strong because, some day in life we will be all of these. Once in life and nev- er again we all have two supreme characters from whom we catch the true meaning of the words “purest love”. So called are the “Parents”; the amazing selfless creation to this harsh world. There are some who have no sense about the most precious thing in the world, that they only pay attention and run behind useless achievements. They may have never thought that they will always miss the heartiest blessings for their achievements as they do not have their parents with them. Elder care homes have become a place for those mothers and fathers to relieve their blessings towards the empty space of their own frozen souls. Listening to the sweet stories once they have dreamt to say to their grandchildren, bringing a smile to thvose faces for a second may be the best thing one can do to console those minds. As a result of this twinning project, UOM Leos were privileged to see those smiling faces. The project was done on 21st of September, 2016. We had tea with a snack and we made music for them to enjoy. They sang with us, danced with us, forgetting all the grievances for a while. We were able to shine their hearts and fill their minds with happiness while on the other way around we were the luckiest to be happy by knowing that they were happy. Finally we realized that it was very much compatible to use “YOU SMILE-WE SMILE” as the title for this blissful evening. Unlike in the previous years, this year the religious event took a step forward and got blessings not only according to the Buddhist culture, but also following the rituals of Catholicism and Hinduism. The spiritual occasion started from Bellanvila Rajamaha Viharaya with the bodhi poo- jawa conducted by the priests. This was followed by the participation at the Sunday Mass which was held at Jesu Medura Church, Nadimala. There, the Leos were given a comprehensive explanation about Catholicism and its significance which was indeed very valuable for the non-Catholics who were present that day. Finally the Leos ob- tained blessings from the Vishnu Kovil, Nadimala. All the Leos including Leos from our district as well as from other districts participated actively in all rituals with the determination to serve the community in an enhanced way throughout the year.
