It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. www.counterculturenetwork.org.uk Our mental Health Our physical health Our relationships Our Our work environment Our activities Our income Cbthealthclinc.co.uk 22 www.counterculturenetwork.org.uk Black women threats to our wellbeing Racism Research suggests that experiencing racism can be very stressful and have a negative effect on overall health and mental health Sexism Black women have not reached economic equity with other ethnic/gender groups because they have borne the double burden of ethnic and gender discrimination in the workplace Stigma In some communities, mental health problems are rarely spoken about and can be seen in a negative light. This can discourage people within the community from talking about their mental health and may be a barrier to engagement with health services. www.counterculturenetwork.org.uk Impact on our Mental health • 29% of Black women had experienced a common mental disorder in the past week, a higher rate than for women from White British and Other White ethnic groups 2014 • There is a growing body of research to suggest that those exposed to racism may be more likely to experience mental health problems such as psychosis and depression.4-7 • Racial trauma can result from major experiences of racism such as workplace discrimination or hate crimes, or it can be the result of an accumulation of many small occurrences, such as everyday discrimination and microaggressions • race-related employment discriminations—were found to be significantly associated with reported job stress www.counterculturenetwork.org.uk Anxiety what is it? Stress usually happens when we are in a situation that seems too demanding or overwhelming and we think that we don’t have the personal resources to deal it – we start to think that we can’t cope, which then adds to the stress and increases our anxiety If you have many demands in your daily life, this stress response can be constantly activated. Over time it can 2 5 build up and affect health and wellbeing. Cbthealthclinc.co.uk www.counterculturenetwork.org.uk ALLOSTATIC LOAD THEORY OF STRESS Allostatic load is "the wear and tear on the body" that accumulates as an individual is exposed to repeated or chronic stress. www.counterculturenetwork.org.uk Interventions • interventions for the reduction of work-related stresses through an increase in support networks and awareness of personal and political issues affecting work – (i.e networks like counterculture) • Identify culture - and gender-appropriate for those Black women who were most likely not to seek traditional mental health services • change patterns of coping through psychological interventions • alleviate or buffer the effects of stress through the provision of positive support networks and by increasing knowledge of interpersonal and psychosocial variables (i.e., ethnic and gender discrimination) that may be significant sources of stress . • Mays VM.
