He is appointed as the district vice president of Leo District 306 A2 because of his exceptional skills and big heart. From the very beginning of his Leo career he committed a lot for the betterment of Leo Kasun Lokugamage Vice President Leoism and now he is very satisfied about Leo District 306 A2 his life as a Leo. By now he is looking forward to serve more to the society in the upcoming Leoistic year with his fellow Leos in Leo District 306 A2. by Leo Club of Polgasowita and that’s where I gained some interest on Leoism and started my Leo career. 3. How was your journey as a Leo so far? 1. Tell us about yourself I started my Leo career as a member of Leo Club of Piliyandala and became a director of the club. As a developing country Sri Lanka has rural areas like Hambanthota yet. There people face many challenges because of low income. Facilities are also poor in these areas. Students are being financially challenged and they lack of skills that are needed for the development of youth. They need inspiration for education. They are illiteracy on nutritional needs. Some people are addicted to drugs and gateway drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol. Leos, as young leaders could help them by organizing the multi service project “Jeevana Yathra’17”. It was held on 30th and 31st of October,2017 in Hambanthota educational zone to whom need of guidance to be brilliant in their academics and personal lives. We could direct 7 major projects including O/L seminar at , Prefect’s workshop, medical camp for students and teachers, Art competition for primary students, Book donation and Library book donation and Nutrition awareness program for students and the drug prevention program for the members of ADIC. Leo Chathuranga Alwis and Leo Ravindu Bandara were co-chairmen, Leo Praminda Vindika was the secretary and Leo Malinda Wijaydoru was the treasurer of this Mega Multi Service project. All the organizing clubs gathered together to achieve this success. 5 6 National Leo Diabetes Day Mass Walk 2017 Induction A major project conducted with adjoining Leo Mass induction was one of the of the Sri Lanka Diabetes Federation, Sri major event done by Leo Multiple Lanka College of Endocrinologists and District 306 for the Leoistic year 2017. Lions Multiple District 306 in collaboration Leo Mass Induction was held on 22nd of with the non-communicable Diseases October 2017, at the New Arts Theatre, Bureau, Ministry of Health held a walk to University of Colombo. This was the celebrate the National Diabetes Day and an event where we found new blood for awareness campaign with many events on continuity of the Leo Movement. the 12th November 2017 at the Galle Face Green Grounds from 6.30 am onwards. Around 500 Leos participated for this event and around 200 Leos newly This was the biggest Diabetes Day inducted for this great movement for National event held in the country with serve our community. The beach near hotels are cleaned by the municipal council but Dehiwala beach is not cleaned regularly because there aren’t any hotels around that area. So we decided to select Dehiwala beach to do this project. The shore was very dirty and hasn’t been cleaned for weeks. There were beer cans, arrack bottles, polythene bags, plastic water bottles and etc. Somehow while cleaning the beach we were giving some cool drinks by a restaurant close by as an appreciation for cleaning the beach. In the end the beach was clean and tidy. 8 Leo Club of Sri Lanka Technological Campus GIFT OF WISDOM “Reading is the most powerful gift we can give a child: it puts stardust in their imaginations.” Reading can open up new worlds and enrich children’s lives, their social skills and it can provide children with endless hours of fun and entertainment. However, for so many other young children in Sri Lanka, the story is very different indeed. In many schools’ books are not readily available and have become a rare commodity. ‘Gift of Wisdom’- is a book donation programme done by Leos of Leo Club of Sri Lanka Technological Campus with the hope of providing reading materials for the rural schools. For this project, Leos collected gently used books from our Leo members, campus students and the staff of SLTC. On 9th of November 2017, the book donation programme was held at St/Mary’s College, Elpitiya, Galle where the books were successfully donated to the school library. We donated more than 300 books including novels, English story books, educational books, frictions etc. 9 Leo Club of Sri Lanka Technological Campus COLORS Life of a person with disabling conditions is not an easy journey. They have to go through different challenges day in and day out. Specially, children with disabilities suffer a lot due to many reasons. We need to hold the hands of these children and take them along with us since they should get the emotional, financial, and physical support from the society. We as Leos strongly believe that people of the society should have a soft corner in their hearts to acknowledge those children’s position in the society. Special Education Unit of Kg/Mw/Beminiwaththa Maha Vidyalaya, Mawanella is a place where about 20 differently abled children come to learn. On 25th and 26th November, as the phase 1 of this project, our Leos cleaned and painted the classroom of those little children. This is a joint project with our hosting Lions Club, Lions Club of Polgasowita. Our sincere thanks goes to Lion Keerthi Samarasooriya, President of Lions Club of Polgasowita Lion Nilupul Perera and our Leo Advisor Noel Palliyaguru for their sponsorship and guidance. The objective of this project was to develop the infrastructure facilities for the differently abled children so that they can enjoy the fresh and clean environment to study. Phase 2 of the project will take place in the future. “Disability only becomes a tragedy when society fails to provide the things needed to lead one’s daily life.” 10 Leo Club of University of Moratuwa APEKSHA Uncertainty is a common phenomenon of the world. But should we discourage ourselves due to this? On 11th of November 2017 we, the Leos of university of Moratuwa taught that anything beyond our control is not something to suffer, by holding a project with kids in cancer hospital. This project was held from 9 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. at play house in kids’ ward of Maharagama cancer hospital. Classical music society of University of Moratuwa contributed equally in this project with Leos. Some fun activities and a musical program were held for little kids and to finalize the program we donated some essential medicines for the treatments to the hospital. Though we can’t get what we choose in every moment of life, it’s nothing wrong in expecting good to happen. In some moments expectations can do miracles. We expected something good through the project “Apksha”. That moment was valuable for those innocent kids and for us too. 11 Leo Club of University of Moratuwa HEARTBEAT We, the UoM Leos always look forward to console the people who need the assistance most. With the intention of standing on behalf of them, the second and the third phase of the service project series Heart Beat was launched on 4th and 5th of November at Kakirawa and on 18th and 19th of November at Kallagama. Both projects were consisted of two programs on Education with Humanity aiming the O/L students of Maha iluppallama Maha Vidyalaya and Kallagama Navodya Vidyalaya respectively, two awareness programs on diabetes and cancer, a leadership and Motivation program for the students of Maha iluppallama Maha Vidyalaya and Kallagama Navodya Vidyalaya respectively. The phase two of the Heart Beat was concluded with a musical program “Sarigamata Aruthak” and a parental awareness session on their children in Kakirawa area. 12 Editor’s Note As the district editorial panel of Leo District 306 A2 we are very proud to present you all the good deeds of our fellow Leos where they outstretch helping hand to the people in need in whatever the capacity they can as a one big family with the guidance of our district president Leo Lion Kalindu Dissanayaka.
