At UPD, we’ve facilitated a wide range of community engagement events and regularly research what works best. ESSER plans require meaningful input, and it is the moment to apply new methods to make community engagement truly authentic. Here’s a list of things to consider as you jump in with fresh eyes: FORGET THE AUDITORIUM Split your parent and community participants into small groups. FIND HOME TURF VENUES Host meetings in spaces other than schools that are familiar and comfortable for your participants (community centers, neighborhood gathering spaces, etc.) CHILDCARE SHOWS YOU CARE Pulling out of evening commitments and engaging meaningfully in community meetings in the evenings is tough. Onsite childcare can make it easier for participants to focus. PROVIDE INTERPRETATION SERVICES Bi-lingual flyers aren’t enough. Choose the best language for your audience and secure interpretation services for the event to communicate and engage multilingual participants in the discussion in real time. GIVE FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS A CHANCE TO NETWORK Open up opportunities for participants to get to know each other with icebreaker activities. CLOSE THE LOOP Touch back after the event with participants to let them know what their input has led to, and what's next. TO LEARN MORE VISIT WWW.UPDCONSULTING.COM
