T he Leo club being a youth organization, one of the most awaited events in the Leoistic Calendar every year is the Leo youth Camp. This year, the Leo Youth Camp 2019 under the theme of “Lead with Zeal”, was success- fully held at the School of Artillery, Minneriya on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of March 2019. This year we saw a participa- tion of over 120 Leos undergoing a rigorous, challenging and thrilling set of activities that improved their team spirit and leadership skills. The Leos after being separated into teams came up with the most imaginative and hilarious names as their team name. The first day solely consisted of activities that im- proved team performance. The second day being one of the most memorable days in the camp, was the day that the Leos experienced a challenging hike, activities near the lake and an amazing night at the campfire which in- cluded dramas, songs, fireworks and of course comedy. On the third and the final day, the Leos were put through an outbound training with many mini challeng- es followed by the awards ceremony. The three days spent at the camp made it one of the best Youth Camps held so far with many Leos strengthening the bonds they have making the A2 family stronger. In this march, with the theme of 'Towards Educating' they hoped to encourage and motivate the Leo youth to actively engage and empower the needful community around us by supporting a selected 100 students from various schools around the route of the walk by donating them the tools to win their future. They are made of sweet, determination and a hard-to-find alloy called GUTS.” S portsfest’19- the Annual Sports Day of Leo District 306 A2, focusing on building up the sportsmanship & team spirit among the fellow Leos, was held on 24th of March 2019 at Boralesgamuwa Maha Vidyalaya. The three houses named “Expendables”, “Avengers”, “Incredibles” competed with each other with the one goal of increasing leadership and fel- lowship through sports skills. It was a great opportunity for Leos to show their hidden sports talent & leadership skills as well. The program was con- ducted in 3 phases focusing on the key aspects that directly influence the proper development of future leaders; Phase I- Education development, Phase II - Spiritu- al Development and Phase III - Leadership development. Ally THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 05 05 LEO CLUB OF KATUWAWALA A Ray of Light into Darkness C hildren Remand House in Gampola gives pro- tection and utmost care for children who have taken into custody and have ongoing court cases with pending decisions. The place is under direct super- vision of the Department of Probation and Child Care services and children both male and female in the ages ranging from 8 – 18 years stay here for a period of 3 months – 3 years depending on the final judgment made by the law. Leo Club of Katuwawala was able to donate sports items for this house which would definitely improve the children’s psy- chological conditions and would help them to forget their prevailing situations at least for a moment. We might not be able to take these children out from their dark lives, but we were ensured that we could shed some light into their dark lives through these donations we made. Both Leo Clubs of Katuwawala and Piliyandala planned and got together to donate these machines to the selected families in the Gam- pola, Kandy on the 05th of May 2019. While we were on the project, as a result of the information re- ceived through Leo Duminda, we were able to do- nate a dry ration pack along with some essential items to a family who was living a very difficult life- style. At the end of the day, it left us with the ques- tion whether it was fair to complain about the things we don’t have when there are so many people who are not privileged enough to even have a roof above their heads to live. Our main purpose was to distribute a packet of Lunch and to speak with the minor workers and appreciate them for the service they do towards our country. Listening to their stories we felt what a life people go through just to earn a day to day living. Some to-do their jobs on small scale pavement selling and then some to earn some amount to live. Yes, they manage their lives and have trans- formed this as their lifestyle. Some have talents, some people being disabled, some do a service disregard of the weather and climate. Their needs to fulfill necessities was far more im- portant than any obstacles. Ally THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 05 08 LEO CLUB OF MATTEGODA Best Holiday Ever “ He that Plants a tree, loves others beside himself” Best Holiday Ever is a tree plantation project to the children who are newly admissions to the school this year 2019. For the first -grade students, April is going to be their first holiday in their school life. We wanted to give them a special experience to spend their vacation. By conducting this project, we also hope to show our contribution to make awareness about global warming. Henceforth we planned a tree plantation program jointly with Lions Club of Halthota Central, Lions Club of Weedagama and the EcoV organization. To give a greater effect and impact our agenda comprised on doing lectures aiming both students and parents. The event was held on the 29th March 2019 from 12.30p.m. onwards at Deepangoda Pri- mary School Kirigampamunuwa. At the end of the discussions and activities, we distributed 40 fruit (Narang) plants among the children which were sponsored by Lions of Lion Club of Weedagama. As a Piliyandala LEOs we always try to give a great valuable message to the public, even to the small thing we do. In here also we were not think about build a green garden with planting trees. We used Eco bricks which were made by using waste polythene and plastic bottles. This pro- ject was conducted by the LEOs of Piliyandala join together with ECO V Foundation and most of our fellow LEOs supported us to make a Eco bricks. With this project we were able to en- courage the society to use waste polythene and plastic in an useful manner. The project always tries to connect LEOs with nature. As usual, the journey con- sisted of walking through fine forest, crossing bridges, rock climbing and hik- ing. According to the project chairman’s instructions LEOs followed his footsteps while making memories and enjoying the natural views of the area. They didn’t for- get to keep the memories safe by taking numerous photographs. Ally THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 05 13 LEO CLUB OF SLTC April Cool T his was a nationwide project which was launched from SLTC in order to celebrate the Environmental day on the 1st of April 2019 by joining hands with the ‘Ministry of Telecommuni- cation, Foreign Employment and Sports’. Hon. Minister Harin Fernando graced the occasion and it was telecasted live on PEO TV. The ‘Green army’ was launched which was a novel initiative to recruit a volunteer task force aimed at the protection and conservation of the envi- ronment. Since the main objective of this pro- ject was to make the university premises a zero- polythene zone, a plastic collector was intro- duced. The Leos of Sri Lanka technological campus also introduced an eco-friendly bag and conducted an item about the preservation of trees & 3R system. Later the event was followed by the tree plant- ing project where the students of the university planted over 400 trees around the campus premises. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.” This is the story line of a movie which made me feel that a significant social issue has to be taken into con- sideration. How a child will be raised is totally up to his or her parents or guardians. Not all children are being offered equal or enough social awareness. The environment they raise, people whom they come across and the ways of consuming also affect the growth of them. If we analyze an individual who is knowingly or unknowingly responsible for the violence and challeng- es arises from it and lost his or her balance between the society, it must be mostly the childhood. Though there are many philosophies, teaching might be a solu- tion for this, making a change in an individual’s life seems to be very challenging. Thus, the only simple so- lution is good parenting. “It’s easier to raise a noble child than fixing a bro- ken person”, said by writer Frederic Douglas.
