Scrubs - 2022 My Legal Advice By Jude Wells EXT. - SUBURBAN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NEIGHBORHOOD DURING THE START OF MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. Music cue - Weezer - A Little Bit of Love Birds eye view of families packing their cars, groups biking by and bbq-grills being turned on in various back yards. Zoom on a house on the middle of the street. INT. - GARAGE - RETIRED BABY FURNITURE, STACKS OF BOXES, OUT OF ONE BOX HANGS THE WORLDS MOST GIANT DOCTOR'S WHITE COAT, CAMERA LOCKS ON A METAL HOOK HAND (LESTER'S). Music fades, a real hand picks up the metal hook. JD (THINKING; IN FORMAL WEAR) How did I end up with this? JD shrugs his shoulders and tosses is it aside. JD Come on box gnomes, don't fail me now, this is important. Where is it? JD rummages through a box for a moment until his eyes light up. He slowly pulls what he was looking for out of the box. Focus on UNICORN JOURNAL, dusty. JD wipes it off. He opens the journal seeming to look for a page and eventually finds it. His eyes scan the page as he seems to become emotional. He looks up and to the left appearing to start a day dream. We hear a short circuit sound. JD shakes his head and tries again. The same sound. JD purses his lips with a look of disapointment. He flips to the first open page, and begins to write. A voiceover starts. JD (MONOTONE) It's been over a decade since I've done this. I'll never forget when I put you in the box, journal. Elliot rented out the nicest restaurant in town to celebrate and invited a bunch of horse experts to deny the existence of unicorns. She's still the love of my life. This week, Kim took our kids, Turk and Carla's kids, and Cox and Jordan's kids with her to a ski town to beat the heat. EXT. - DAY - TURK AND CARLA'S HOUSE Smash cut to a zoom on Turk and Carla waving goodbye to a car as it pulls away. Turk picks up Carla and spins her around kissing her. JD (V/O) They're better than ever. Turk is the team surgeon now for the LA (MORE) 2. JD (V/O) (cont'd) Rams and Carla started her own line of fashionable scrubs she sells online. We hang out, but not nearly as much as we all used to. EXT. - DAY - SOFI STADIUM. Turk walking into SOFI Stadium with a suit on, saying hello to everyone he walks by, splitscreen with Carla on a zoom meeting at home as the kids run behind her. Carla and Turk look very happy. Mixed bag of strange looking people wearing scrubs and tickling each other with feathers EXT. - DAY - HOSPITAL ENTRANCE JD (SERIOUS; V/O) Dr. Cox is the one who has me worried. All of this anti-medicine, anti-doctor rhetoric has really gotten to him. He's losing faith in humanity. Cut to group of protestors outside of a hospital. Dr. Cox walks out the front door after a long shift and shakes his head in disgust at the protestors. He walks right into the heart of the group. COX (SNARLING; SPEAKING TO CROWD AROUND HIM) Alright, you tried your experiment. Apparently if you put all of the most dim lights together, they are indeed capable of a flare. Now get out of here. MAN IN CROWD (ANGRY, DRESSED IN GIANT MOUNTAIN DEW BOTTLE COSTUME) Shut up, murderer! COX (ANNOYED) Listen, Mr. Mountain Dew. This is the real world over here. Take your clowns back to the circus and let us work. 3. MAN'S WIFE (SCREAMING IN COX'S FACE) Killer!!! How many vaccines have you given? Dr. Cox walks past them while his face turns red. The crowd yells at Dr. Cox and instigates him. He continues to the parking lot. Over Cox shoulder the Mountain Dew Man begins to charge at him, sucker punching him. The punch staggers Cox, who shakes his head and balls his fist. Cox spins around and tackles the Mountain Dew Man. The crowd swarms to them as the camera zooms out from above JD (V/O) I was hoping we'd all hang out this week, the old group, and it would help him calm down. We just didn't get to him in time. INT. - COX HOUSE / DORIAN HOUSE Cut to Jordan crying on the phone splitscreen with Elliot who is confused JORDAN He's in jail. He got an assault charge. He's almost 60! ELLIOT (CONCERNED) Oh my god, Jordan, I don't know what to say. Did he get hurt? JORDAN He didn't say anything about that. I don't want to bail him out. He needs to learn. This is ridiculous. Elliot looks over at a tablet on the counter and walks over to it ELLIOT (STOIC) I know what you mean Camera pans to the screen of the iPad, which has an email JD sent declining a big job promotion. ELLIOT (CTD.) They don't wanna grow up. INT. - DORIAN GARAGE. JD is writing in the journal wearing the world's most giant doctor coat. EXT. DAY - CENTRAL AMERICA. JD (V/O) Todd has come along way. When I think of it, it's admirable. 4. Jungle landscape and with a medical facility where an operating room features a sleeveless man finishing on a patient. He removes his mask and raises his hand. TODD Free healthcare five. A Central American doctor high fives Todd, then removes his mask and kisses him. JD (V/O) They met at a banana hammock convention in Tijuana. They opened up a non-profit surgical center, then another, then another. Todd says his sleeves are only cut in the pictures we see because of how hot it is down there. EXT. - DAY - COLORADO - SNOWSTORM Todd and his husband on vacation, Todd's sleeves are cut EXT. - DAY - RURAL ARIZONA TOWN JD (V/O) As for The Janitor, well. He didn't come very far at all. If anything, he went backwards. Cut to Janitor speaking at a podium in front of a large crowd in a suit. JD (V/O) Don't be fooled; he's a GOP congressman of a district he made-up in Arizona called Mop County. EXT. DAY - TURK AND CARLA'S HOUSE - WIDE SHOT - TURK, CARLA, JD, ELLIOT DRESSED IN CASUAL WEAR IN THE FRONT YARD OF A SUBURBAN HOME - THEY WAVE GOODBYE TO KIM'S CAR JD (V/O) And, there's Kim. She's made us more proud than anyone. In a wild turn of events, she's directing movies now. She's rebooting Kindergarten Cop with Brie Larson and took our kids for a week to beat the heat before she starts filming. They all look to each other coming to the realization this is the first week they've all had together without kids in a decade. Music cue - The Midnight - Arcade Dreams, instrumental only 5. ELLIOT (SMILING) Can we just not think about tomorrow, and live in this moment? The other three nod their heads. TURK This is like a snow-day, and the first day of summer combined. I've never felt this feeling Turk begins to shed tears of happiness JD (HUGGING TURK) Let it out, C-Bear CARLA It's hot. I could go for an ice coffee. JD lets his grasp of Turk go. JD (CONFIDENTLY) I'll drive. I just binged all nine Fast and Furious movies. TURK (CONFUSED) JD, you're supposed to binge shows JD (NODDING) I live my life a quarter mile at a time. TURK (SMILING, NODDING) Give him the keys, Carla. Carla looks to Elliot sighing but with a grin, and holds up the keys for JD to grab. Turk and JD run to the car as Carla and Elliot walk. They get into the car. INT. - CAR. JD How crazy is it that when the first Fast and Furious came out, we all weren't a group yet, and it's 2022 and they're still making those movies. TURK I'm just going to come out and say it, it's a Point Break ripoff JD gasps, shoots a look at Turk. JD (DISGUSTED) How could you? 6. TURK Think about it. By the way, I haven't seen you this upset since I told you Avatar was Pocahontas. JD tilts his head up and to the left. Short circuit sound. Turk looks to Elliot. TURK He's doing that again? JD No, I hear you. CARLA I need that iced coffee. Turk, push your seat up. Who do you think I am back here, Tyrion Lannister? JD Better buckle up Carla, this kitties about to purr. EXT. - DAY - DRIVEWAY Cut to car pulling out then down their road too fast. EXT. - DAY - COFFEE SHOP PARKING LOT. They walk to the car with their iced coffees. INT. - DAY - CAR - THE HAVE THEIR COFFEE IN THEIR HANDS. JD stops short in traffic splling everyone's coffee all over them. They simultaneously close their eyes, open them, then stare daggers through JD as JD coils in embarrassment. JD (SHAKING HIS HEAD) Carla you should really get these breaks checked. They're a little sensitive. TURK The smell of coffee bean will be in here forever. ELLIOT Relax, it'll offset the smell of pinto beans from that night we we spilled our takeout from that Brazilian steakhouse. CARLA When was this? TURK Before we went to the school play, when you were in Vegas for the medical suppliers convention. 7. CARLA (LOOKING DOWN AT THE MESS) Right. Hang on a sec. Carla exits the car. From the inside through the window we see her walk to the trunk. She signals to JD who reaches to pop the trunk. EXT. - DAY. Carla removes a box from the trunk and plops it on the ground. CARLA (SARCASTICALLY) Come on children, time to get dressed for the day. Elliot, Turk, and JD exit the car simultaneously and circle around the box on the ground. Carla reaches into the box pulling out two pairs of light blue scrubs from her fashion line and tosses them to Elliot and JD. CARLA Always said I wouldn't get high on my own supply. Turk reaches down and takes out a pairs of green and pink scrubs. He hands the pink scrubs to Carla. Carla walks off screen to change while the other three stare down at the scrubs in their hands, then look at each other Carla appears back on screen in pink scrubs and reaches into the box grabbing a handful of scrubs of various colors and begins to use them to clean coffee from the interior of the car Pan to Elliot, Turk, and JD now in their scrubs. ELLIOT All we need now is our old nametags. JD (LAUGHING) I think I have those in a box somewhere. TURK Dude, if you don't slow down, you're gonna be on Hoarders. JD Do they still make that show? TURK (SHRUGGING SHOULDERS AND SMILING) Anything can come back. Music Cue - Lazlo Bane - Superman 8. COUNTY JAIL - THE STREETS ARE ALIVE OUTSIDE OF IT WITH HAPPY PEOPLE READY TO START THEIR WEEKEND AND THE SUMMER JD (V/O) Despite how much fun we're all having, it's hard not to think about Dr. Cox. INT. LARGE JAIL CELL WITH 20 PEOPLE - IT LOOKS LIKE A BARNUM & BAILEY FREAK SHOW OF HUMOR - PAN TO DR. COX IN FRONT OF THE CELL STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF TWO HARDENED CRIMINALS STARING THROUGH THE BARS TOGETHER. COX LOOKS JUST AS HARDENED AND ANGRY AS THE MEN TO HIS LEFT AND RIGHT. JD (V/O) Everyone seems to think its what he needs, at least for a night. I'm a little uneasy on that sentiment, though. A hand appears on Dr. Cox Shoulder. Dr. Cox slowly looks to it with a scowl on his face. He turns slowly. Facing him is a small man with watery, pleading eyes. SMALL MAN Is it true you're a doctor? COX (EXHALES IN RELIEF) Who's asking? SMALL MAN (INTENSE EYE CONTACT) Follow me, please The man turns to walk to the back of the large cell as Dr. Cox looks around. He begins to follow the small man. They wade through people to the back corner of the cell which is dimly lit. COX (QUIETLY) Doesn't this place offer free healthcare? We see a man trying to conceal pain in his face, holding his oblique tightly. SMALL MAN (QUIETLY) He got shot, he can't have anyone he know. Dr. Cox looks at the man in pain. 9. DR. COX (QUIETLY) We don't have anything we can reach in there and pull it out with, but we might be able to pinch around the bullet like a splinter until it forces its own way out. EXT. DAY - PARK The core four are walking around the park in their scrubs and laughing, it's noticeably sunny CARLA (REALISING SOMETHING) Elliot and JD, I never told you who I saw in Vegas? JD (CURIOUSLY) Wayne Newton? ELLIOT He's still performing? JD He'll outlive us all, Elliot. CARLA (LAUGHING) No. What has two thumbs and loves massages. JD (SHOCKED) You saw Bob Kelso in Vegas? How is he? CARLA (LAUGHING) He was Bob Kelso in Vegas, how do you think he was? UNKNOWN VOICE Incoming! Softly crashing through the four as they walk is Dan Dorian, putting his arms around Turk and JD with a large smile. Dan observes their scrubs DAN What happened, you all get a bunch of demotions? JD, Turk, Elliot, and Carla laugh in surprise as they look at Dan. DAN (CTD.) Wait, Turk, you weren't the guy who accidentally stabbed the quarterback in the lung with a needle, are you? 10. TURK (GRINNING) That was The Chargers, Dan, not The Rams. DAN As long as none of you turn into Dr. Drew, I'm proud of you. JD (SERIOUSLY) It's good to see you, Dan. What are you doing here? DAN Ah, I'll tell you tomorrow. TURK (TO DAN) What's life been like? DAN Well, I saw Luke Skywalker on screen again, so, I'll probably ride that high another five years. Turk, Dan, and JD begin to huddle up and talk about The Mandalorian. Carla and Elliot face each other ELLIOT I needed this so bad, Carla. CARLA We all did. I wish Dr. Cox was here. ELLIOT It's funny how he'll always be Dr. Cox to us, huh? Bob was the Chief of Medicine and we don't call him Dr. Kelso when we reminisce. This doesn't feel right without him. CARLA We have a whole week, we'll see him. ELLIOT It feels like we're right back there, doesn't it? Turk, JD, and Dan rush up to Carla and Elliot. JD (SMILING) Okay, here's what we're going to do. Music cue - Charlie XcX - 1999 11. The group talk under the music and then begin to act out a scene from the Mandalorian as Elliot and Carla half-reluctantly play along. Montage of North Hollywood changing over the years decorated in holiday decor from New Years Day through New Years Eve, ending in the exterior for the county jail where Dr. Cox is. INT. COUNTY JAIL - DR. COX IN A ROOM WITH A BANK OF PHONES, HE HOLDS ONE TO HIS EAR Split-screen appears with Jordan on the other side looking at her iPhone screen. She answers. OPERATOR This is a collect call from an inmate in Los Angeles County Jail. Do you accept? Jordan's eyes look down. JORDAN (ANNOYED) Yes! DR. COX (THANKFULLY) Jordan, how are you? How's Jack? JORDAN I'm okay, your son is coming to terms with the fact that his father is The Black Dhalia. DR. COX (LAUGHING, RELIEVED) There she is. JORDAN Maybe not for long, Perry. What the hell were you thinking? DR. COX (SERIOUS) I couldn't control it, Jordan. JORDAN That's not acceptable. DR. COX I know. JORDAN (SERIOUSLY) You're almost 60 years old, you have a son, a wife, why are you fighting? DR. COX It won't happen again. 12. JORDAN (SERIOUSLY) How can I know that for sure. You aren't setting a good example, at this point, that's what I"m most concerned with. DR. COX I need out of here Jordan. He looks around the room DR. COX (CTD.) This place isn't good for me. JORDAN Well I think you should sit in there and learn your lesson. Maybe it will get through in there. DR. COX (SHAKING HIS HEAD) I don't think that's the solution, Jordan. JORDAN What do you know about solutions? You beat up a man dressed in a Mountain Dew bottle. Jordan hangs up the phone as the split screen ends, focusing on Dr. Cox with his head down. JD (V/O) I miss my Luke Skywalker. INT. SACRED HEART - 2001 we see the back of R2D2 and C3PO slowly waddling down a long hallway in sacred heart. Cut to their faces; they have Turk and JD's faces. JD (CONFUSED, R2D2) Are we sure we know where we are? TURK (CONCERNED, C3PO) Yeah, this is the third floor. I'm positive they told us to report to the third floor. They know what they're doing. A group of mean looking doctors poke and prod at the two while conversing amongst each other Loud audible whistle Cut to a glowing man in a tan doctor's coat with his hands on his hips. Light covers his face. He steps forward, it's Dr. Cox with Luke Skywalker hair. 13. DR. COX Are you Dorian and Turk? JD and Turk whip around with their eyes wide. TURK (UNSURE) Yes. DR. COX You're supposed to be up on the fourth floor with me. Now, tell me, how exactly did you pass medical school? JD Geography wasn't a big focus. Dr. Cox shakes his head disapprovingly then smiles. DR. COX Come on. Dr. Cox turns around and starts walking the opposite way as Turk and JD follow. Fade. EXT. - DAY - PARK the five are walking in a row and smiling - this cuts in and out with an old clip of them together walking TURK Bro, two things. One, Dr. Cox works more as a Obi Wan reference, two, why are you telling us your daydream? JD He was a glorious hero. TURK Dude, he Platooned us. We thought Kelso was the good guy on our first day. JD (REALISING) Oh yeah. See, that's why I never should've gotten rid of my journal. ELLIOT (CRACKING UP) Don't say that. JD (V/O) It was a decoy! TURK I got a text from The Todd earlier, he's in town with his husband. They have a hotel a few blocks away. 14. JD The more the merrier. ELLIOT Let's get an Uber, we've been walking all day and I did seven hours on the Pelaton yesterday. CARLA (SHOCKED) Seven hours?! ELLIOT (NODDING) Yup, it was right after Elliot stops and takes out her phone. ELLIOT (CTD.) I have some Uber credit from a food order I had to return. It's on me. What hotel is The Todd at? TURK They have a suite at the Lexen. ELLIOT Lexen it is. DAN Which one was The Todd? JD D.O.C. DAN Oh, THAT guy. TURK Other than JD, he's my best friend. DAN I love that guy. I think we sang Michelle Branch at Karaoke together. ELLIOT Uber's here. The five walk in line to the Uber, a grey SUV. DAN Hey, have any of you gotten any weird postcards from somewhere called Mop County? They shake their heads laughing as they get into the car. Dan looks around confused. 15. EXT. - DUSK - LEXEN HOTEL - BICYCLES AND TECH COMPANY SCOOTERS WHIZ BY ON THE SIDEWALK - THE FIVE GET OUT OF THE UBER JD (PATRONIZING) I remember when you used to have to buy your own scooter! TURK Tell us more grandpa Dorian. JD acknowledges the joke and looks down with a grin. The five walk into the hotel. INT. LEXEN HOTEL - SUITE FLOOR - JD, ELLIOT, TURK, CARLA AND DAN ARE OUTSIDE DOOR TO ROOM 444 - CARLA KNOCKS The door opens and we see The Todd. TODD (SMILING) Five old friends.. Todd raises his hand TODD (CTD.) Five-five Todd high fives each member of the group as each winces in pain. Turk stares at his hand. TURK He's still got it. Todd's husband Toduardo appears next to Todd. TODUARDO Yeah he does Toduardo high-fives Turk. The gang enter the hotel suite, a lavish room with modern furniture. JD I thought it was a non-profit you were running, Todd. TODD Oh, it is. Toduardo's parents own a banana farm. He's my sugar daddy. Everyone finds a seat on either a counch or a chair in the living area. ELLIOT It's great to see you, Todd. 16. TODD Likewise, why are you all in wearing scrubs? CARLA It's a long story. I designed them. Do you like them? TODUARDO They are divine! Carla grins as Todd gets up. TODD I'm getting some wine, no refusing until after the first bottle. The gang begin to gripe but quickly give in. Todd leaves the room, returning shortly with a bottle of red wine in one hand and three glasses in the other. TODD Turk and JD, can you help The Todd with some more glasses? Turk and JD get up and retrieve five more wine glasses from the suite's kitchen. DAN Looks like you fellas have a lot of extra room here. I don't have any accommodations myself, mind if I crash? TODD The Todd can't say no to a man in need who he sang Michelle Branch with. DAN You know what, why isn't Dr. Cox here? You guys still talk to him? JD Yeah, we're just a little upset with him. Elliot remembers something. ELLIOT Excuse me, I have to call Jordan. CARLA Tell her I Love her. Elliot gets up and walks to the kitchen with her phone. 17. DAN What happened? JD (LAUGHING) It's the most Cox story you've ever heard. Music Cue - No Vacation - August. INT. SINGLE JAIL CELL - BUNK BED - DR. COX ON TOP BUNK - EMPTY BOTTOM BUNK - HOVER OVER DR. COX FACE AS HE CONTEMPLATES He stares blankly for a while then closes his eyes. He begins to toss and turn before laying flat on his back again with his eyes open, staring. Cox's body pops up for a second as if he was kicked from under him, he mouths something and slowly looks down to what was an empty bunk. Smiling back up at him is Ben Sullivan. DR. COX You gotta be kidding me. He rubs his eyes, Ben is still there but in a different pose. BEN Miss me? DR. COX What happened, you took too many pictures up there in heaven and they passed a vouyerism law or something? BEN I'm here on a mission. DR. COX Is this where I get my lecture? BEN No, it's where you get reminded that you're lucky enough to still be alive, and throwing it away or adding risk to that by putting yourself in here so you can relieve some demon in your mind with a few seconds of satisfaction from a fist fight isn't a nice way of appearing thankful for that luck. DR. COX Maybe you've been sipping too many frozen margaritas with Andy Kaufman up there, Ben. It's not necessarily a picnic down here. World's changed a lot since you died. 18. BEN But, has it? Dr. Cox ponders the question. DR. COX I'll go ahead and say yes BEN What about your world? Jordan, Jack, your friends. What has changed about that? DR. COX We've bonded. 35% of this country hates us. BEN Wouldn't you say that's a good thing. Dr. Cox shakes his head in disgust. DR. COX Don't tell me a disease that wiped out hundreds of thousands was put here so my friends and I can stay together. BEN I'm not saying that's why it happened, I'm saying a result of it happening is your personal world, the important one, getting better. DR. COX How good of that if the world around us goes to crap? BEN You can't control that. DR. COX So I should just focus on myself while others suffer? You know, I became a doctor for a reason. BEN Do what you can do. Do the right things. But don't get upset when you don't see an immediate reaction in the world at large. Speed up to time-lapse as the two argue through the night, pacing around the cell. The sun comes up through the cell window. Dr. Cox sits up on the bottom bunk staring at the ground. Ben Stands in a corner. 19. A guard comes to the door and signals for it to be unlocked. A loud buzz is heard and the cell slides open. GUARD Cox, you've been bailed out. Dr. Cox looks up. DR. COX Was it from a Jordan? GUARD I think so. Dr. Cox stands up. GUARD (LOOKING AT PAPERWORK) Wait, not Jordan, JD. Is that short for Jordan? Dr. Cox shakes his head and walks out of the cell, Ben follows him to a processing desk where Dr. Cox is handed the suit he was wearing when he came in. EXT. - DAY - POLICE STATION - DR. COX AND BEN ON THE SIDEWALK - DR. COX SQUINTS FROM THE SUN, BEN IS UNAFFECTED. DR. COX (TO BEN) How long do I have you for? BEN According to ghost rules, you have to return me to the cemetery before the sun goes down, or I can never visit you again. DR. COX (SMILING) I'd really love to get the most out of that, Benny, but I have a family to save. BEN Atta boy. The two turn and begin to walk down the sidewalk. INT. HOTEL SUITE - LEXEN HOTEL - LIVING AREA - ZOOMED IN ON EMPTY WINE BOTTLES JD (V/O) We all drank too much and decided to stay the night in the suite. Zoom out, Turk and JD on one couch, Carla and Elliot on the other, Dan on a chair. JD puts his phone down and wakes up Turk. TURK Carla! Where are we? 20. Carla sits up rubbing her forehead. CARLA Punta Cana? Elliot sits up rubbing her eyes. ELLIOT Is this what people without kids do every weekend? JD Carla, do you remember kicking me square in the back and yelling Thumper? CARLA (LAUGHING) Yes, Bambi. JD (RUBBING BACK) I think you might've curved my spine inward. TURK Wait, why did you kick him? Carla looks up and to the left. Flashback - JD is on the coffee table dancing to Bad Guy by Billie Eilish, Carla runs, jumps, and kicks him in the back off the table. Carla sits up and laughs. End Flashback. CARLA (SHRUGS SHOULDERS) What? We were having fun. You spent the ten minutes before talking about your strong back. What did you want me to do? JD rubs his back as Elliot and Turk laugh, giving Carla a pleasant look. EXT. BEN'S GRAVEYEARD - SUNNY DAY - DR. COX AND BEN HUG GOODBYE IN FRONT OF BEN'S GRAVE Ben disappears. Cox stands there alone with his head down for a second, Bob Kelso appears over his shoulder in a black suit. DR. COX (SMILING) Come here to say hello to one of your old mistresses in the Valley? KELSO (SERIOUS, LOOKING COX UP AND DOWN) It didn't happen to you again, did it? Zoom out, Dr. Cox looks around and makes a realization. Him and Kelso hug. 21. Camera pans to a caretaker setting up an easel with a white poster board. Zoom in on poster to reveal a picture of Ted with writing under it that says Theodore Buckland, Esquire, 1963-2022. Flashback - Elliot, JD, Turk, Carla after Kim's car pulled away. ELLIOT Can we just live in this moment, and not think about tomorrow? Flashback - Dan, Elliot, Jd, Turk, Carla in the park JD Why are you here, Dan? DAN I'll tell you tomorrow. INT. - THE TODD'S HOTEL SUITE - ONE HOUR EARLIER. As the group laugh together, Todd enters the living area in a black suit with his head down. He looks up, and takes a deep breath. TODD Alright, time to do this. The group stop laughing and look down to the ground simultaneously. JD Is this why you're here, Dan? DAN Remember when I drove that guy's new car across the country for him to deliver it? JD Nods. DAN I racked up a bunch of parking and speeding tickets, there was a warrant out for me. I couldn't afford to pay. Ted took care of it for me. He said he knew the D.A. Right after that, I turned my life around. The group grin and hold back tears. JD If we head home now we can change and make it there in time. Turk looks at Carla. 22. TURK I'll get us a ride. JD Looks at Elliot. JD I'm on it. EXT. - GRAVEYARD - DR. COX AND KELSO TALK AS CHAIRS ARE SETUP AROUND THEM BY CARETAKERS KELSO This isn't a joke anymore, Perry, you have to calm down. Those guys could've killed you, you gave them every reason to. It could've been you here. DR. COX (NODDING) I'm not so sure I didn't want it to be, Bob. Kelso slaps Cox. KELSO Enough. An elderly woman appears over Kelso's shoulder. Kelso hugs her. KELSO My condolences, on your son, Ms. Buckland. Kelso reaches into his jacket pocket and removes an envelope. He hands it to Ted's mother. Ted's mother opens it to see it stuffed with cash, she shakes her head. Three members of Ted's acapella band arrive along with a spattering of others. First we see Keith, Lonnie, and Doug arrive. Acapella group begins to sing. Music cue - Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah by Acapella Group. Turk and Carla arrive with Jordan, walking up to Dr. Cox and Dr. Kelso and greeting them somberly. The Janitor and Lady arrive, behind them is Dr. Wen, Dr. Beardface, and Randall. JD, Elliot, and Dan arrive and go directly to Dr. Cox. DR. COX (OVER MUSIC, TO JD) Thanks for getting me out of there. 23. JD There won't be a next time. DR. COX (NODDING) Got that right. Dr. Cox puts his hand on JD's shoulder. KELSO What in the world is this? A man is wheeled into the frame by police like Hannibal Lector, it's Hooch. JD looks at Turk JD AND TURK (TOGETHER) Hooch! Jordan looks at Hooch, then to Dr. Cox. Dr. Cox looks down. He looks up to Jordan and shakes his head to as if to say "won't happen". Denise, Bernise, Franklin, Ed, and Colin Hay arrive. Colin joins the Acapella Group and adds his guitar playing while the others take their seats. A pastor speaks (Bill Lawrence) at a podium while the music plays. Music lowers. PASTOR If anyone would like to share anything, now's the time. Dr. Cox stands up immediately and begins walking to the podium. The pastor greets him and steps aside. DR. COX There are, I don't know how many doctors at this man's funeral, and he died at 56 years old. To his family, I apologize for all of us. We failed him. Cut to JD, Turk, Carla putting their heads down. DR. COX (CTD.) We spend so much time worrying about livers and kidneys and hearts and lungs that we neglect the brain. We neglect the mental aspect of this game we play. We go the whole nine for complete strangers every day, while drip by drip we neglect the ones we love the most and we become so wrapped up in everything we forget to love them at all. 24. Cut to crowd watching intently. DR. COX (CTD.) We let annoyances take over. We start to see the parts of the world we hate in the eyes and bodies and faces of the ones we love, and it rubs off on them. We look for signs that we were conditioned to believe are weakness, and we pounce, to make ourselves feel better. Dr. Cox begins to well up. DR. COX (CTD.) Damnit if it took me this long to find out those were really signs of strength all along, and whoever is responsible for all that conditioning that started however long ago, well, as miserable as I may make myself sometimes, I'm sure glad I'm not as miserable as that bastard. JD, Turk, Elliot, Carla, and Kelso grin. DR. COX (CTD.) The roles we fall into in our day to day lives don't define us. That's my lasting memory of Ted Buckland. JD looks up and to the left and there is no short circuit noise. A daydream begins. FLASHBACK OF TED IN HIS HAPPIEST MOMENTS PLAYS AND FADES JD grins then looks forward seriously. Fade. INT. JD AND ELLIOT'S GARAGE - JD IS WRITING INTO THE UNICORN JOURNAL IN HIS BLACK SUIT. JD (V/O) It's unfortunate how you never realize how large of an impact someone has had on your life until they leave it. From now on I'm focusing on the people in my life, after all, they're all I have. Maybe Ted stuck around us all those years because we were important to him, despite all the jokes and slights. Either way, we'll miss you, Ted. The End. 25.
