I want you to live on mission and be purposeful and intentional. To do this, we need to know what you value most. Below is a list of 100 values, highlight or circle the top five values that resonate with you today. Feel free to list your own. Ultimately, I’d like for you to narrow down the list to your top three values. This does not mean you don’t appreciate the others. But it is important that we have a realistic set of values that will help us stand out and will also be manageable. All rights reserved. PREPARE TO LIVE ON MISSION START WITH THE END IN MIND Our paths crossed in the early 2000s when I took a management certificate course at a local university. I noticed right away that he was different. He stood out as dignified, distinguished, intelligent, inspirational, professional, and spiritual (all at the same time). He was the professor of the class. He was also a graduate of prominent military academy. I later found out that he was founder of Life Champion International and he was a life coach. Later, our paths crossed again as our families met at softball games with our daughters. Sadly, on February 14, 2009, at the age of 43, he died when a tree fell on him during a freak windstorm. When I arrived at his funeral service, I was in awe at the number of people lined up to pass by his casket. There must have been around 1000 people patiently waiting in line. Near the front of the line I picked up his funeral card and read of his achievements at the Air Force Academy and the honors he received in the aeronautical engineering department. He was a Rhodes scholar, an Air Force officer, a founding member of a church, and so much more. What struck me most at his funeral service was the personal mission statement I share with you on the next page. Tyler had created this mission statement at some point in his life. It was clear to me that he lived on mission and that is what made the difference that stood out to me on day one. It is also what made the difference at his funeral service and the legacy he was leaving. Live on Mission Workbook Page 5 ©2021 Dean Business Consulting, LLC. All rights reserved. IF THIS WAS THE LAST YEAR OF YOUR LIFE What would you do if I gave you $86,400 each day. Would you spend it all, save some, or give some away? Did you know that we are each given 86,400 seconds per day. Unlike money, we cannot roll it over or save it for later. When those seconds are gone – they are gone. What needs to change so you can use your time wisely? There is more to life than what this world has to offer. I want to live for eternity. Do you? There is a saying, Not of this World (NOTW). Romans 12:2 tells us to not be conformed to this world. We are only on earth for a short time. But, as a follower of Jesus Christ, we will be in heaven forever. How would people remember you? Is this how you want them to remember you and your legacy? All rights reserved. Are there relationships that are broken that need to be mended (Matthew 5:23-24)? What would you do with your material possessions (Luke 12: 18-19)? PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENTS Your personal mission statement will set clear boundaries of what you will and will not do. The mission statement should be short. And know that it can be a work in progress. Stephen Covey, said, “Personal mission statements based on correct principles are like a personal constitution, the basis for making major, life-directing decisions, the basis for making daily decisions in the midst of the circumstances and emotions that affect our lives.” Let’s look at some more examples. MY PERSONAL VISION STATEMENT The difference between a vision statement and a mission statement is that a vision statement describes the desired future, whereas the mission statement focuses on today. They are related; however, they are distinctly different. Below are vision statement examples. The vision statement is aspirational. It includes hopes and dreams. It can focus on the big picture of what we plan to accomplish. The mission statement includes actionable items and the who, what, when, and where of our focus. THE BALANCE WHEEL Now that you have an idea about your vision, mission, and values we need to make sure you have time to live on mission. Evaluate the balance wheel below to see if you are living with balance in each applicable area. What area(s) of life needs more or less attention? YOUR TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS Developing time management skills is a journey that needs practice. Below are some strategies for using time. For most people, the issue is not enough time. Please think about where you spend your time and how your activities are either filling your gas tank for the journey or draining your tank. This should help you to see what you can keep doing, as well as those activities you can stop doing, delegate, or find another way to complete. CREATING CAPACITY - TIME This exercise is available also available at: https://halftimeinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Creating-Capacity-Time.pdf. Capacity (or margin) is about having excess time, energy, and money left over at the end of the week, month, and year to love and serve others. This excess capacity enables us to explore a new direction for our lives and to have the resources (time, money, and spiritual overflow) to follow God’s leading. Let’s start with time first. Where can you open up capacity in your calendar? In the grid below, list the activities you regularly allocate time to in a typical week. Then, across the four columns, score those activities based on these variables: Heart (I enjoy this and it fills me up) Impact (I am making a significant eternal impact in this area) Growth (This activity enables me to learn and grow) Obligation (I have a responsibility to do this activity) Rank each activity 1 to 5 in each of the four categories. For example, a “low obligation” activity would score 1 and “high obligation” activity would score 5. In the last column, add the scores across left to right. SET SMART GOALS Now that your personal vision statement and personal mission statement are in writing along with your values, gifts, strengths, and more, it is time to write your Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals to make sure you are staying the course. Think back to your balance wheel above. For each area of your life, think about where you are today and where you want to be in 6-months, 12-months, 18-months, etc. Remember to keep your vision and mission in front of you. Let’s get started. Where are you today? Then, fast forward to where you want to be in 5-years. Once you have filled in both columns, work your way backwards to write your SMART goals for each 6-months between now and 2026. Write it down and place it in your home where it is visible to keep it front and center in your mind. On the next page is a sample of my own roadmap for this year. This is a wonderful tool to revisit often, at least quarterly, to make sure you are on track. And update the roadmap annually. Keep it close and refer back to your vision, mission, values, SMART goals, and roadmap often. I would like to encourage you to reflect on this work that you are doing to live intentionally. Choose specific day and time each month along with a quiet space, your favorite warm tea or coffee, and pray for divine wisdom, guidance, and direction. Trust me – He does have a plan for you and I believe this workbook is a big step in the right direction.
