Yonker‘ Free Pre‘‘ MONDAY MARCH 9, 2020 - BRIAN HARROD PUBLISHER Annunciation Parish In The Crestwood Section Of Yonkers Is Experiencing A Coronavirus Emergency Closing. Catholic School In Yonkers Closes In Coronavirus Emergency By BRIAN HARROD The Annunciation Annunciation Our Lady of Fatima parish in Yonkers Scarsdale is the latest school to shut down due to the COVID-19 virus. The Annunciation Annunciation Our Lady of Fatima parish is an ac- tive Roman Catholic parish of over 2,500 families with two churches, an elementary school and the Pope Fran- cis Mercy Center that houses some of our outreach programs. The school is reporting to author- ities and families them that a student at the school was in close proximity to a person who has a case of coron- avirus. So far the person who tested pos- itive for COVID-19 and the exposed student are not showing any symp- toms, but the coronavirus has a long incubation period. The family of the the student has been ordered to self-quarantine. The Catholic school will only be closed for two days for janitorial crews do a special sanitized cleaning of the building. This has caused Scarsdale, to is- sue a district-wide school closure. All Scarsdale schools are closed and all after school activities are can- celed for the next ten days, because a a teacher at the middle school tested positive for coronavirus and is expe- riencing mild symptoms. Yonkers Public School Superin- tendent Edwin Quezada is re-opening schools in the city of hills now that janitorial crews have wiped down all of the buildings in the district. Last Friday, Yonkers Public Schools canceled all activities and did a district-wide cleaning. Superintendent Quezada says stu- dents and staff members will be sent home if they have symptoms or have come in contact with a person who does have the virus. This follows news from city hall that an ice skating rink in Yonkers was temporarily closed for cleaning and sanitization after members of a local hockey team who recently played on the rink were put in quarantine for possible contact with COVID-19. The outbreak and its rapid spread also has officials in Yonkers cancel- ing tomorrow ’ s “Irish Coffee Recep- tion” and city council president Mike Khader has canceled all of his March events. Yonkers Public Schools is prepar- ing a 14-day lesson plan for every grade level. It would be a pencil and paper les- son, because not every student has ac- cess to a computer and wifi at home. The district says it will immedi- ately contact the county and state health departments before making a decision to dismiss classes.
