The 2019 “death festival” kicks off Thursday, October 24, with opening night featuring acclaimed author Anne Lamott with Anna Sale, host of podcast sensation Death, Sex & Money at the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco. Reimagine events will continue for 10 days, concluding on November 3. Details on the 2019 lineup of more than 200 events are available now at letsreimagine.org—many events are free to attend. “Death is no longer part of the natural cycle of life and community. It happens unseen behind the sterile walls of a hospital. Even though over 80 percent of us say we want to die at home surrounded by loved ones, fewer than 20 percent of people die that way now,” said Reimagine founder and executive director Brad Wolfe. “We can do better by giving ourselves permission to explore death and prepare for it, and by creating spaces and support to remember our loved ones fully.” A grandson of two Auschwitz survivors, Wolfe began exploring death through art during college when his close friend, Sara, was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer. As a songwriter, he naturally turned to music to help soothe her as she faced her own end of life. Today, Wolfe and his Reimagine End of Life team collaborate with community leaders in the arts, spirituality, healthcare and design to create memorable events that break down taboos and bring diverse communities together in wonder, preparation and remembrance. More than 200 Reimagine End of Life events will take place all over San Francisco, Oakland and nearby cities, spanning both Halloween and the Day of the Dead. Life’s universal truth will be explored and loved ones celebrated through concerts, comedy nights, film screenings, art installations, interactive workshops and more.
