Charles Spurgeon said, “Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength”. Thoughts? Agree? Disagree? 6. R.C. Sproul said, “Christ told his disciples not to be anxious about tomorrow, but He never said not to consider tomorrow. Intelligent problem solving demands careful consideration of the future effects of present solutions”. Thoughts? Agree? Disagree? 7. What does it mean to be anxious or to worry? What is the difference between worry/anxious and godly concern? Explain. If you were to create a top ten list of the things that cause us to be anxious or to worry, what would be on the list? • What causes you the most worry? Where do you struggle the most? Explain. 2. What illustrations does Jesus use about worry and being anxious? Why is Jesus addressing this topic? What is going on that needs to be addressed? What are they worried about? In what ways are they just like the gentiles? How is this a human condition? Are any of us immune from it? • Why does our physical needs tend to be what we worry about the most? Explain. Why do we spend significant amount of time worrying about the future? Explain. Is planning for the future wrong? Why or why not? What does worrying get us? • What has caused us to be anxious or worry the most in 2020? You? How has it demonstrated that we are not in control? How has this demonstrated our need for God? Who is our provider and sustainer? 3. When we worry, what does that say about God? Why is it wrong to worry/be anxious? Why is it harmful? What does being anxious and worrying do to us physically? Emotionally? Mentally? Spiritually? • If/when we worry, does it have any benefit? Why is it futile and a waste of our time? Explain. What does Jesus say in verse 27? If it doesn’t have any benefits, why can/does it preoccupy so much of our time? What does acknowledging this reality and perspective do? 4. What is the antithesis and anecdote to worry/anxiousness? Do you trust God with everything? Where is your faith at? Has God ever failed or let you down? How is worry a lack of faith? Explain. • What does Philippians 4:6-7 say? What does prayer do for us? How does gratitude and thanksgiving counteract worry/anxiousness? How can we lay all of our worries and anxieties before God? What does God promise to us?
