Together Creating A BETTER LIFE T he Leo club of Kalubowila together with the Leo club of Piliyandala organized a programme for Middle aged men and women living in the coastal area of Dehiwala for a better life. The programme was held at Sip Sewana. The programme was graced by our very own Lion Kamal Seneviratne and Lion Lady Delrusha Seneviratne who addressed the gathering together with the Chief Guest Noel Palliyaguru and Rev. Daya Perera, was very influen- tial to many who gathered that day. Meanwhile, us the Leos were having a special programme for the children of the parents who attended the drug prevention pro- gramme. We divided ourselves among the different grades and taught them Sinhalese, Mathematics as well as English. An art competition was followed afterwards for all the kids. The kids and the parents were treated with a nice cup of tea and a piece of cake. It was a day filled with lots of joy and laughter. Sip Sewana was a place that brought a lot of memories from the past for the Leos of Kalu- bowila, since it was a place that so many good programmes were held in the past from the club and it was nice to go back for another worthy cause. Ally THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 04 02 Youth against cancer Y outh Against Cancer is an International Twining Pro- ject by Leos of Leo Club of Mattegoda, together with 25+ countries and 248 Leo Clubs around the world. We planned to initiate this project around Mattegoda Area. We got some Leaflets and booklets to distribute from the Cancer Hospital. Leos got into the buses, went into the shops and distributed the leaflets among people while an- nouncing some important chapters copied from the books. We received handmade Cancer Awareness Symbol pins to hand over to the crowd we were speaking to. We gave those pins to them to wear it and support for cancer awareness. We discussed around the people at the Mattegoda Bus Stand and asked their suggestions to improve these kinds of programs. An email campaign was launched to all the Leos in Sri Lanka mentioning about what are the types of cancers and how we can get rid of it and what are the im- mediate prevention methods we can practice for cancer. Ally THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 04 03 a N idahas Sarisara 2019 was the Annual Club Trip of Leo Club of Mattegoda. It was held on the 04th February 2019 around Galle. As it was the Independence Day we wanted to celebrate and serve freely. Leo Pasindu Alwis who was the Project Chairman, planned this very well to have a great ex- perience. We explored the Kanneliya Forest Reserve and Galle. In exploring Kanneliya Forest reserve we got into the Falls which was a valuable experience and had a lecture about the Forest Reserve as well. Exploring Galle also quite interesting as we spent time at the beach, had lunch, enjoyed the breeze, played a match of tap rugby, a good swim at the sea. We all had a first time experience in surfing the waters as well. We all joined hands together to clean the coastal area near the lodging place. We were proud of how the neighbors around almost kept the surrounding clean. With that, we got time to speak with people around and foreigners as well. Hence, it was in- deed a memorable day for all Leos. Ally THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 04 06 "Z ero Hunger" A joint project of the Leo Club of Rahula College (Leo District 306A2 Sri Lanka) and Leo Club of D.S.Senanayake College (Leo District 306C1 Sri Lanka) was successfully completed in Galle on the 24th of February 2019 at Galle City. This project was aimed at eradicating hunger from Sri Lanka and it was a great experience for the Leos of both clubs to foster fellowship. About 50 lunch packets were distributed among helpless people. And it was indeed a good op- portunity to show the society how we could take small steps in order to make this world a better place. Ally THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 04 07 T he Leo Club of Rahula College along with the Eng- lish Unit of Rahula College organized a one day Eng- lish Camp; “Rahal English Camp” for the grade 7 stu- dents of the school. On the 15th of February, the Camp was successfully held with the help of English teachers of the school, from 2.00 p.m. onwards. A campfire and a dinner was followed afterwards. Par- ents of grade 7 students and the old boys handled the financial aspects. The Leos contributed in organizing this event, in order to uplift the English teaching- learning system and polish up the skills of students. Entertainment programs and games were held to pro- vide some relaxation to the stressed lives of students as well as teachers. 316 students took part in the pro- gram. The support of the principal Mr. F. Welege and the staff advisor Mrs. Chandani Siriwardena led to the huge success of the program. Ally THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER LEO DISTRICT 306 A2 ISSUE 04 08 L eo Padura, one of the main annual events organized by the Leo Club of University of Moratuwa was held on the 20th of January, gathering many Leos and Lions from the Leo Multiple District 306A2 together. It was indeed a wonderful evening showcasing all the singing and dancing talents of our fellow Leos from the district. Not only with singing and dancing acts, but also the crowd was entertained with a drama performed by the Leos of the Leo Club of University of Moratuwa. One new notable difference added to this time was inviting some of the great figures in Sri Lankan Field of Art, and appreciating them over the contribution they have done on behalf of the improvement of the field. Mr. Jayathissa Alahakoon, Mr. Karunarathna Amarasinghe and Mr. Athula Ransirilal were some artists among them. Leo Padura once again gave an excellent platform for many Leos to showcase their aesthetic talents . UoM Leos joined hands with Mora Karate; the Karate Team of University of Moratuwa and conducted this event in the evening of last 25th of February to give some basic knowledge and experience on self-defense. The guidance to the program was given by Mr. Pradeep Satharasinghe, the Representative of ISKF Sri Lanka branch and IKMA Sri Lanka branch, together with the support of members from Mora karate. This event was highly appreciated by the participants as it was an un- imaginable experience for them, and that it has devel- oped self-confidence and discipline in themselves. It can be simply explained as a security system for threaded fasteners. (Nuts and Bolts) Why such security system is required? We all know that threaded fasteners are use to assemble parts in every field all over the world since the industrial revolution. But failure (loosening or breaking) of bolts lead to damages of valua- ble property endangering many lives in every year. As you can remember, on 19.03.2012 Sri Lanka lost a valuable life of a youth due to failure of a bolt of a train foot board at Veyangoda sta- tion. Searching the Internet, we can have a summary of bolt fail- ure accidents all over the world. So, inventing a security system to avoid this preventable nut and bolt failure is a must. Does your invention “i- cap” helps to stop bolt failures? No. “i - cap” helps to detect possible bolt failures which are happening silently. At a glance we cannot identify a loosened bolt. But if you apply an “i -cap” to a bolt, it will warn you by showing a red color even at the initial stage of loosening of that bolt. Additionally, it will start a warning alert electronically. So, the user can take appropriate actions to prevent this possible bolt failure. Is “i-cap” expensive? It is inexpensive and can be easily applied to new or even for existing bolts. After tightening the bolt user must push the “i - cap” around the bolt and paste it. To apply the electronic alert sys- tem, two terminals of the “i -cap” should be con- nected to the circuit. How it works? “i – cap” has a special mechanism to change its own color according to the condition of the bolt. In a well tightened bolt “i – cap” only shows green color indicating that it is not loosened and it is in its original position. When the bolt is getting loose, green color will gradually decrease and red color will appear. Whole area becomes red after complete loosening of 1st round. Luminous colors are used in “i – cap”. So even in night, a flashlight will clearly show loosened or broken, nut and bolts. With the help of the electronic monitoring system, we can monitor bolts even from a distance . Who are the beneficiaries?? Every field all over the world will have benefits. From simple machine to air crafts, ships, huge cranes have visible or invisible fasteners which play a vital role in holding their parts together. Although they carry numerous lives and properties, checking every single bolt before a jour- ney is impossible. “i - cap” is the emerging solution for this problem. It will warn failing fasten- ers at initial stage so, users can take appropriate actions to save the whole lot of trouble which will come later. What are your future implements? My aim is to develop this product using Android and IoT. So, in near future you will receive alerts to smart phone about your valuable machines and vehicles located far away from you.
