Angling Club NEWSLETTER: APRIL 2020 (April 1st 2020 - March 31st 2021) Dear Members, we are distributing this, our first newsletter via the club's new website coorsanglingclub.com and email. Our preferred method of communication would have been the AGM but unfortunately this has been postponed due to COVID-19. This has impacted on our joining process and the two planned additional evening joining sessions Tuesday 2nd and Tuesday 9th June 2020 from 7.00pm until 9.00pm at the Washlands club will now be our main joining sessions. Obviously these dates may be subject to change due to potential COVID-19 restrictions. Please check the club's website for updates. Members are still able to renew by sending a cheque for the relevant subscription (as listed on the website), made payable to "COORS AC" along with an SAE. Anglers wishing to join the club must complete a membership form (available on the website) and provide two passport photographs. Please note that the fully completed forms, passport photographs and SAE are normally mandatory for Anglers wishing to join the club. However, due to the current situation we appreciate that passport photographs may be difficult to obtain and for this year we have agreed to remove this requirement. If, however you are able to provide two photographs that would be most helpful. New Website This year saw the retirement of Dave Mellor the Web Designer. Thanks to Dave for his hard work over the years in producing a very respected website. The position of Web Designer is now in the hands of Oliver Williams who we wish all the best in this new venture. Flooding Angling this winter proved challenging with heavy rain and strong winds resulting in some of the worse flooding seen in years. Unfortunately this affected the club's scheduled open matches with a number of enforced cancellations and also limited pleasure Anglers river fishing. This had many Anglers turning to the club's canal stretches and Middle lake to provide their fishing fix. Trent and Mersey Canal Anglers fishing the canal have benefited from the recent significant improvement work carried out to the towpaths along the club's stretches. Fishing couldn't be easier from the wide, easily accessible towpaths. The actual fishing has also been good and for anyone looking to land a PB Perch our stretch of the canal is definitely recommended. A series of 5 matches was held between January 2020-March 2020. Winning weights ranged from 5lb 3oz-13lb 1oz which is remarkable given that some matches were held in gale force Cont- winds and rain. An average turn out of 22 anglers fished each match with the majority of the matches reporting no dry nets. The quality of the fish in the canal appears to be improving with one match producing 12 perch over 1lb between 4 anglers (see website). The club has recently agreed a new three year lease with the Canal & River Trust for all our stretches at Rugeley and has the option of a further three years. Baileys meadow Vehicular access restrictions will be lifted before the new season with a specialist contractor in place to carryout repair work to the track following heavy plant machinery using the track during underground cable repair work. The club has also applied for a grant to assist in replacing the wooden fishing platforms on the Baileys stretch using recycled plastic material similar to modern park benches. Watersmeet This popular stretch with anglers targeting Chub and Barbel is now under new ownership and we are currently negotiating with the new farmer to maintain our access. This is ongoing but we will keep you up to date on progress via the website. Middle Lake The current Covid-19 travel restrictions have presented difficulties in arranging the new lease on the lake, along with the planned significant restocking project. This is ongoing and we will keep you up to date on progress via the website. Open Matches Have again proved extremely successful, fully booked and attracting the very best river match Anglers. Both the three day festival and the Drennan final producing spectacular weights from all the sections (see website). Club Matches Congratulations go to John Blunn who was a worthy winner, proving a very consistent Angler over all the eight matches. These matches provided varied fishing on the club's river, canal and lake. They were popular and very enjoyable, with a big thank you going to John Lewis for his continued support. The planned matches scheduled for this year are currently unfortunately postponed due to Covid-19 but we will keep you up to date on progress via the website. 2 Cont- As you will see on the club's website there are a number high profile open matches scheduled which include charity matches and a Riverfest qualifier. Anyone wishing to assist in the running of these events is most welcome. No-one is thrown in at the deep end (no pun intended) and it's the quickest way to learn which are the most consistent pegs, together with how the elite Anglers approach the river. When the current COVID-19 restrictions are lifted there will be several planned work parties organised and as the old saying goes "many hands make light work". The work parties are necessary to get the river, canal and lake ready for action and the intention is make them as enjoyable as possible, catching up with old friends and making introductions to new members. All that is required is suitable footwear and gloves. Due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, all Coors Angling Club's water will remain closed, please support the NHS and save lives.
